When you have two ships approaching each other on parallel tracks they are each pushing water away from the bow. They’ll “push” each other apart initially. Then behind each vessel they will pull water. So as they get past each other the sterns will pull together. They push apart as the bows are near and then the sterns are pulled together. Push and pull. Normally they would be able to deal with this on the bridge it’s something they do all the time. But if one of the two vessels lost power either just before or while they were passing the other vessel going in the opposite direction they would get sort of twisted but would keep moving forward. Think of a ship sort oflike a grocery cart with four wheels that can turn, like the ones at say an IKEA. This would twist it but it would keep moving basically in the same direction for a while.
