I got to see Army of Darkness many many years before I finally saw Evil Dead 1 or 2 and still love it a lot, but those first two movies became the ones I could put in and watch any time. Mostly it's just themes and ideas I like better. Spooky stuff happening deep in the woods is just great.

I enjoy 2 as like a catalogue of every lovely action movie trend from the preceding decade. I enjoyed the 5th one in the theatre in 3D, since it felt like it was generally better-made and better-choreographed than any of the preceding ones. But it's still lame compared to, say, Blade or Blade 2. The last one had some bright spots, but goddamn, it was cut to poo poo. I feel like I make that complaint about almost every movie I see now, but even the "slow" exposition scenes have an average shot length of maybe a second.

I haven’t actually seen it but that movie is so bizarre. It’s based on an obscure 90s Swedish pen-and-paper role playing game that’s basically a (much) smaller-scale version of Warhammer 40K.
Mutant Chronicles is an odd duck. The original Mutant was a relatively down-to-earth post-apocalypse game similar to Gamma World (or for the layman, Fallout). The second edition went cyberpunk and set everything in huge cities, like Judge Dredd. Then Mutant Chronicles took the setting into space. It's very much a creature of that 80s era of 2000AD, First Comics, etc.

Saving Private Ryan has that moment where Tom Hanks rolls that guy over and finds out his entire face is just GONE. Like, his head is just an empty shell with the brains and everything spilling out. Gnarly stuff. Personally I miss that period of time where the goriest poo poo you can imagine was just hiding out in an action movie.

It does, but that's not even the half of it if you watch the Director's Cut.

I should clarify, for fear of being lumped in with the "Aliens is bad" crew, Aliens is a fantastic sequel. I prefer it over the original. My post was more saying that I prefer Evil Dead II over it.

Which, as I think about it now, should be no surprise to myself, as Evil Dead II is easily one of my favourite films of all-time.

are the same thing!

The Only Good Indians is a really good horror novel set largely on a Blackfeet reservation that manages to avoid the usual " mystical noble savage" pitfalls of native adjacent horror. Probably because it was written by a dude who is actually Blackfeet. It does contain it's fair share of the economic and sociological misery associated with reservation life but the characters are rounded enough that it never feels like 'misery porn'.

also it's pretty spooky.

I like the atmospheric meticulous high-wire tension of Alien and don't care nearly as much for the messy loud dumb action-fest of Aliens

It's still a well made flick and a good time at the movies, but the stuff that makes Alien truly special is not carried over.

Probably cause all elements of Aliens have been copied more or less successfully for a million times, whereas I can't think of a successful copy of Alien.
Also the original Aliens still has a great escalation of tension, it's just the directors cut thats garbage.

I liked it. It's not short of problems but it has a creepy atmosphere and an interesting story. Not many lovecraftian detective movies out there, and not what I expected from something that sounds like a slenderman ripoff.

If nothing else, the ritual scene is loving great.

Kill Bill Chapter 1 has to be in the mix just for the sequence with the Crazy 88. Any 80s-90s Hong Kong gangster movie won't be far behind, considering the two rules of the genre are "guns never run out of bullets" and "nobody's dead till they're shot in the head".

The Thing owes more to Body Snatchers than Alien. It's all about distrust and paranoia and isolation. Alien is more sexual horror, for the entirely male cast of The Thing.

This is true and also why it absolutely rules.

When I talk to people about horror movies I usually bring up Evil Dead 2 to see if we have similar tastes in broad strokes, then Army of Darkness and/or the Alvarez remake since they're both fairly different in tone in completely different ways. I'm still glad I saw the remake for the first time in theaters, it was so gross.
