I got to see Army of Darkness many many years before I finally saw Evil Dead 1 or 2 and still love it a lot, but those first two movies became the ones I could put in and watch any time. Mostly it's just themes and ideas I like better. Spooky stuff happening deep in the woods is just great.

Saving Private Ryan has that moment where Tom Hanks rolls that guy over and finds out his entire face is just GONE. Like, his head is just an empty shell with the brains and everything spilling out. Gnarly stuff. Personally I miss that period of time where the goriest poo poo you can imagine was just hiding out in an action movie.

Aliens isn't bad by any stretch, it's quite fun. But as a sequel it's a big letdown.

I should clarify, for fear of being lumped in with the "Aliens is bad" crew, Aliens is a fantastic sequel. I prefer it over the original. My post was more saying that I prefer Evil Dead II over it. Which, as I think about it now, should be no surprise to myself, as Evil Dead II is easily one of my favourite films of all-time.

The Only Good Indians is a really good horror novel set largely on a Blackfeet reservation that manages to avoid the usual " mystical noble savage" pitfalls of native adjacent horror. Probably because it was written by a dude who is actually Blackfeet. It does contain it's fair share of the economic and sociological misery associated with reservation life but the characters are rounded enough that it never feels like 'misery porn'. also it's pretty spooky.

I like the atmospheric meticulous high-wire tension of Alien and don't care nearly as much for the messy loud dumb action-fest of Aliens It's still a well made flick and a good time at the movies, but the stuff that makes Alien truly special is not carried over.

And if so which pages? I liked it. It's not short of problems but it has a creepy atmosphere and an interesting story. Not many lovecraftian detective movies out there, and not what I expected from something that sounds like a slenderman ripoff. If nothing else, the ritual scene is loving great.

Any 80s-90s Hong Kong gangster movie won't be far behind, considering the two rules of the genre are "guns never run out of bullets" and "nobody's dead till they're shot in the head".

Kvlt! posted:Army of Darkness is gory its basically a gorified goosebumps episode This is true and also why it absolutely rules. When I talk to people about horror movies I usually bring up Evil Dead 2 to see if we have similar tastes in broad strokes, then Army of Darkness and/or the Alvarez remake since they're both fairly different in tone in completely different ways. I'm still glad I saw the remake for the first time in theaters, it was so gross.
