Crap I just noticed the tiny little Shrek face. In my mind's eye, I can see a youthful William Shatner asking it whether it's safe to leave town yet, and waiting, filled with anxiety, for a straight answer.

Where you wouldn't want/need a full computer. People were trying to make tablet computing a thing for a long time before the iPad.

It reminds me a bit of the Phillips IS-2630, a failed "screen phone" developed by Phillips+Lucent in the late 90s. It's hard to find any good contemporary pictures, but they ran Bell Labs' Inferno operating system. It wasn't for video calls, the screen was so you could have a nice contacts list and other utilities. When the project got canned, somebody acquired a bunch of them for cheap and resold them as Linux development toys, back in a time when ARM was kind of exotic. Here's a picture from an ebay auction, note that the coiled cable you see below the keyboard is for the (missing) handset--the keyboard was infrared. Reality: A cheap hardbound notebook or a box of index cards works better than any existing software recipe managers

I couldn't be bothered to fool around in the OS but apparently this thing became quite popular in the hackaday kinda scene. I also tried playing Ninja Gaiden on it, and it worked about as well as you'd think. Maybe the world is ready for the Google Hepburn Home now in 2021.

Another month...more LDs on the brown couch. The first movie I bought on DVD. I still absolutely love this film and am adamant it is a documentary not fictional (same as Idiocracy) Random shock movie to go in the stack with Cannibal Holocaust NSFW for titties on the back of the sleeve. https://i.imgur.com/J3FEC9q.jpg I really dig the alternate Japanese cover art to Johnny. This was the main purchase to slowly get to the end of a silly collection of techy movies from 1995 that for better (Ghost in the Shell, Hackers) or worse (The Net, Virtuosity) represented some form of 'Cyberpunk'. Really did enjoy Species when it first came out. Unknown actress did a lot of special effects work like a champ. It's also an AC-3 release so great audio. Why not the lovely sequel too

No beatings (he’s a good Dad), but he took things out of my left hand and put them in my right until I started doing it naturally. His argument to my Mom was that the world was built for right-handed people and my life would be easier. He had a point, my life was easier as a righty, especially when I was young. There was not a lot of accommodation for lefties back then. I remember left handed schoolmates struggling with stuff and was glad I didn’t have to deal with that. I don’t agree with forcing handedness, but I don’t resent my Dad or anything.

My older brother was vaguely ambidextrous until the school system (California, 90s), or I guess some specific teacher, insisted that he be either right- or left-handed. Apparently they accepted left-handedness but not his ambivalence. He started writing solely with his right hand so they'd stop complaining. He can still with his left hand, he tells me, it's just that he never got any better at forming letters with it since he stopped practicing with it. (In what must've been like 6th grade?)
