I know this is the funny thread, so I'll try to bring some actual content next post. I'm just going to say right and left for the sake of brevity. I'd also like that say that anything I'm about to type is not to excuse abhorrent behavior, but about understanding its roots. One of the big things that especially fucks America is how incredibly loving isolated people are from "the other side" of where their position sits. They have family, school, friends, and coworkers that mostly if not totally agree with them. People can make it through their whole life without having to really think through and defend a challenge, legit or not, to their personal paradigms. Having grown up split between two households at constant war, one right one left, one native one immigrants, one crazy religious one atheist, was good potting soil for critical thinking. But I think a poo poo ton of people never get to see the world outside of their little geographic bubble. If we are being honest, how many of us rightfully laughing at the freepers have ever been fully jettisoned into a hostile peer group and had to think out way out, unable to just tell them to get hosed? Only having two parties doesn't loving help.

They engage with left-wing thought on a critical level only insofar as they can insult it, degrade it, laugh at those who believe it, and if you ever manage to actually corner them on any point, they will either drop all pretense of intellectualism and attack or completely disengage rather than consider the alternative point for even a second. I've seen it happen for more than a decade with over a dozen different Ring Wing People in my life, and its why I stopped trying after one of my best friends fell all the way down the Trump hole. You can't have reasoned discussion on the merits between two sides when one side believes the other's merits don't exist because their entire ideology is illegitimate, morally evil and necessitates extermination of both the ideas and the people who have them.

Through accidents of history, the right-wing perspective tends to also get centered and privileged. While this is of course in large part due to Capital, it happens in a lot of realms where you would think matters would be neutral or even favor center/left/liberal/whatever perspectives. There may well be "two sides" but they are not interchangeable or equivalent, although of course there are strong pressures on people to perceive things that way.

This extra funny to me because of the military worship they all have. You have to wear a helmet while driving EVERYTHING. If you're operating a vehicle around other people, a passenger (you never drive by yourself) has to ground guide the vehicle with a helmet on. Anytime any vehicle related incident happens the first thing on the form is "Helmet worn? Seltbelts used?"

If he was Orthodox he wouldn't have been in the military as they were exempt from conscription until very recently, and if he had bucked that tradition and joined up he would have been pretty roundly shunned in the Orthodox community. Also he wouldn't have gone to a party based around a pagan/Christian holiday.

Woman firefighter trainee is victimized by sexists running firefighter training in effort to "put her in her place." Man is caught in the crossfire and thus is ALSO a victim of their callous bigotry. Man blames THE WOMAN. Just charming stuff. (I don't know anything about firefighters, but doesn't basic logic dictate that if there are some parts of the job a firefighter is less good at, like rescuing people from buildings, and other parts they're more good at like... every other part of firefighting, that's, like, normal and not some grand proof of  in MANLY PROFESSIONS? Or would we also disqualify a MAN from ever being a firefighter if he was 5'2" and couldn't lift a 200 pound dead weight on his own because that's how muscles work?)

Actual certified firefighters need to be able to carry people up to a certain weight out of a building while wearing full gear and with oxygen. However I suspect the technique might be a bit different than for men and I’m betting they did not have any guidance on the subject. Women qualify as certified lifeguards all the time, they have to pass a similar type of practice rescue test. I’m sure it’s very possible.
