I rewatched the LD episode last night where we first meet the crew of the Solvang on their original ship, and the show makes an understated but clear point that there are families aboard; we see several kids. A few episodes later? All dead.

What even would the crew do? I mean, you need a few guys to turn the wheel and plot the course and respond to admirals, plus a few guys to fix stuff in engineering apparently. And i guess the doctor is kinda smart. But in terms of actually flying the ship, that should be enough. Presumably everyone else is there for other reasons. Science seems to be the biggest one (especially stellar cartography, they always come up), but other than that I think we see some security guys who are basically marines and then just generic "crew". For comparison, modern cargo ships apparently have a crew of around 25, pretty much regardless of size according to my friend who was crew on one of the largest ones. Keep in mind that includes rotations, du it's super skeleton crew. Also lol at the guy estimating the in universe cost of anything in a world where replicators exist and money don't (latinum pretty much had to be invented for Quark to have money).

Ya the real problem is the depiction of Trek ships as being 99% habitable volume inside. Not like Trek is huge into realism, but it'd be more reasonable if the ships were like... a third pressurized space and the rest was equipment/tanks/etc. Galaxy is still big but not as absurd.

Hilariously the Disco turbolift dimension is probably a more realistic depiction of what most of the volume of a starship would be.

Are you saying people should get in a lift, travel a bit, get teleported, and then travel a bit more in the lift? Because that sounds incredibly dumb. And it highlights how silly turbolifts are in a world where we frequently use transporters. In a way, Discovery's personal transporters make a lot more sense.

Iain Banks pretty much nails it when he established for The Culture that once you have anti-gravity tech and forcefields are the main thing holding your ship together rather than any actual hull structure, your ship can be any shape you want it to be because form has no utility at all.

In Undiscovered Country, once the Enterprise crew uncovers the conspiracy to sabotage the peace talks, why didn't they just send a quick message to Khitomer to warn them of a possible assassination attempt? McSpanky posted:In one episode Geordi says that 90% of all ship functions are automated, which makes perfect sense to me. Hell, the crew number of ~1,000 isn't even all ship operations, that includes mission specialists and civilian auxiliaries. Depending on how much weight you want to give David Gerrold's novelization of Encounter at Farpoint, the "operations crew" of the Enterprise-D is about the same size as that of Kirk's Enterprise. And keep in mind, some of Kirk's crew were science staff as well.

Martytoof posted:I’d settle for a remake of A Klingon Challenge I'd settle for at least one of the cast recordings from Secret of Vulcan Fury being unearthed and finally seeing the light of day, and then having them set to CG animation or something. The script went through a ton of permutations, but it's known that at least three full cast recordings were done. (Although by the third, Kelley's health was failing and he couldn't travel, so Maurice LaMarche was brought in to voice McCoy.) But anyway, given what very little we know of the story, it seems really fascinating, and it would just be nice to have one of DC Fontana's final Trek contributions finally released. But given how legendarily lovely Interplay was when it came to archiving stuff (there's an interview with a former developer who said that everyone showed up for work on a Monday and the office was padlocked from the inside, everything was being boxed up and tossed out by the bank's repo guys), the odds of this happening are remote. But maybe those recordings are on a hard drive in a box in someone's basement, somewhere. Maybe.
