Now that I’m 100% WFH I’d been hemming and hawing about selling my Mazda6 that I no longer need (it’s a 2017 Touring, with a six-speed manual, so it’s a bit of a unicorn and I was terrified I’d regret selling it) but last weekend I got a wild hair up my rear end and traded in both it and my ND1 (that I’ve owned only a year, they gave me more than I paid for it on trade-in lmao) and upgraded to a ND2 RF. It feels so bougie and frivolous, but man it makes me smile every time I look at it

As someone who actually enjoys the full roadster experience - I sold my hardtop last summer after 10 years - I know I'd never get an RF, but drat if I don't lust after everyone I see on the road. Congrats! My NB1 is back on the road minus AC & PS, the depowered rack is a new feeling, even after coming from a factory manual racked NA6. Engaging is the word that comes to mind. Upgraded my reroute to a hardline after a few years of long floppy rad hose as well as new wheel bearings and extended studs all around. I have a feeling the steering is going to force me to reinstall my ultrasheild seat just for the bolster support. Poster with the moldy NA - if you want it gone you could try pinging Phillymiataclub on IG - Sitha runs that account and I'd bet he'd snatch it up or find someone who would. Also SNS Parts (Alex) would come take it if he's headed up that way.

^^ that's niiiiiiiice I guess while I'm pulling the front end off my NB to weld the chassis rails I should take a look to find out where the mystery oil(?!) leak is coming from. At least this gives me the excuse to go back in and install a new water pump. They sent me the wrong one last year but I didn't have time to wait for them to send the right one. Dickheads.

I don't think so! Hopefully nothing falls off until I can get this fixed with the first guy. Since stuff is going to have to come out this is a perfect opportunity to also do the timing belt which is probably overdue () and maybe the clutch too since I've had the kit sitting around for a few years now. I've hammered away at them with the claw side of a hammer and a section on each side of the car is fairly crusty but not too bad. I'm wondering what the inside is like considering most of the bolts have snapped like the undertray ones. Might treat it to nicer anti roll bar mounts as the stock ones are pretty thin. Whole underside is a bit crusty and the offside rear arch needs hacking out but I've already got a nice shiny new one to weld back in. Hopefully this isn't too much of a nightmare but I've got some time off to get it done over Easter.

Just managed to reach the guy, around $600 for them to pull the engine, weld in the new rails, paint and put everything back together. The first available slot is in July but eh, I'll just keep driving until then. I'm a cheap bastard but since they'd be able to do the clutch and timing belt with minimal extra labor, it's worth it to have it done properly. I'm happy to hack away at the Jazz beater myself but even though this isn't a garage queen, I woudln't trust myself to weld important pieces on it. You can certainly get a Cayman for around $15k, though PDKs might not be under the threshold yet but should be pretty close. It seems like the only decent option for a sportscar, a slushbox won't cut it unless it's just for cruising.

Did you pull the engine or are you doing it with it in place? $600 isn't a bad price at all to be fair, I'm going to be welding it as the engine sits in it so I'm having to pull apart the front end. I've noticed the front of the sill needs a patch too, mine came with the bolt on mudguards and I guess dirt and moisture got behind it and the arch lining. The car's 23 this year so I should probably expect a little rust! Mine is a very early Mk2 which was apparently a dealer test car when the Mk2 launched. I'm the 3rd owner, the 2nd one kept it for 18 years. She was 70 when she part exchanged it for an SLK and it still smells like old lady perfume despite a good cleaning One thing I'm noticing taking it to bits is how much Mazda loved to use the very worst quality bolts that weld themselves in place. Going to try and replace as much of that as possible with nice stainless and grease the loving things.

I am eyeing a flyin Miata sway bar for the nd2- looks like an involved, stressful install so found a shop that should have the skills. As a car noob who has never altered their vehicle, are there any trip reports from goons on the sway bar addition? I am probably only going to be on the streets in the short term future, but can perceive the rolly nature of the stock nd. Why is this considered “playful” for the streets? Will. A sway bar reduce “playfullness”? I don’t understand how having the car be more compliant would reduce the road experience, then again I’ve never driven an aftermarket sway barred car

It will level your car out in turns making it seem like it’s responding to your turning inputs faster.

Looks like they also are selling a reinforcement kit for the front sway bar, as I guess there's a potential to rip the sway bars off the frame with heavy use on the ND... My understanding for the ND is that stiffer springs were the way to go if you want less body roll. The factory bilsteins are okay but the springs are absurdly soft. They should be cheaper to install and will avoid upsetting the car the way a sway bar might over rough road. I haven't touched my suspension yet though so maybe I'm talking out my rear end.Olympic Mathlete posted:I was gonna say, unless the ND is HUGELY different underneath that's a crazy over the top estimate. I'm obviously in the wrong industry if that's a standard price. The service manual says you have to drop the front crossmember to do it so I can believe that estimate. I don't know if there's a cheaty way to do it; for example, the R56 Mini requires dropping the rear subframe to change the sway bar but I found a mechanic that was able to bend the subframe enough to squeeze the bar out. If you're willing to spend $700 on a front sway bar you might as well get the Karcepts bar and install it yourself. It's stupid expensive but it's one of the best and comes apart so it's easy to install. I actually held off on sways for my ND and just did coilovers first and I'm very happy at the body roll reduction along with other handling improvements. I'm not sure I need my car any flatter or more laterally connected on the road so I'm sticking with OEM sways for now. If the body roll is literally the only aspect of the handling you care about then sways might be a good choice but if you care about any of the non-lateral handling characteristics and/or might want your overall suspension lower or stiffer, I would consider springs (and maybe shocks) or coilovers before sways. Springs will usually put you in an entire different auto x (and other motorsport) class but changing the front sway is a good way to stay in the stock classes; I think that's why a lot of people go with the sway-bar. Also if you want to keep your ride height I don't think springs would be the answer. They could give you a harsher ride as well. If you go the DIY route this is a great guide: https://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=709333 , I used this but couldn't manage to fish the bar (flyin miata) through so I loosened the radiator support brackets to give me like a 1/2" more clearance. The Karcepts bar is easy to put in being straight but it will squeak and make noise, I think it would be a little overkill unless you trailer your car to events. I had Karcepts bars in my S2000, they were absurdly nice but I would probably not recommend them for someone that just wants a stiffer front bar and just street drives it. The insanely stiff front bars people run are specifically meant for autocross to help transition speed, stop lifting rear tires, and deal with other rule issues they've got going on.
