I highly doubt Liberalerna has any path back to relevance once that happens, the only thing they've had going for them in the last three elections is basically inertia. The real fear is of course that they actually wind up gaining support as a more socially acceptable way to vote for a fascist coalition, but I choose to not believe and not think too hard about that.

So apparently youth unemployment is at 17% in the EU (and this with the usual fudging of the unemployment numbers). We're looking at another 'lost generation' that will receive little notice and support. however this article from DW has a suggestion for all those who are burden by stress, anxiety, and never ending application sending: just do a big stunt broadcasting your desperation and precarity! https://theintercept.com/2021/04/30/italy-anti-mafia-migrant-rescue-smuggling/ this intercept story is an excellent recap of how an originally extraneous entity faced with a decline in its prospective powers - the anti-mafia prosecutorial division in italy - took over basically the nazification of the european response to the migration crisis, and both italian AND european institutions aided and abetted the transformation in policy from 'rescues at sea' to 'refoulements by proxy' i would like to post some choice quotes but reading the article makes me irrationally angry

also, we're probably gonna go back to insisting on shaking hands with the mayor being a requirement to obtaining citizenship this originally came about cause a muslim dude was like, i'd rather put my hand to my heart than shake hands (with a woman, which tbf is a bit silly) & a bunch of mayors were like "eh, its fine if you dont wanna shake hands", so everyone got into a racist frenzy and wanted it proscribed in law that you have to shake hands (cf. attached headline from feb 27, 2020 lmao) that obvs fell by the wayside like 2 weeks later, but now they're on that poo poo again & apparently the governing social democrats are into it this time (they were against it last time). good lord that is stupid as hell, especially in these times pure racist symbolism

To show exactly how duplicitous the Social Democrats are, here's a direct quote from now-PM Mette Frederiksen in 2015 when refugees were arriving in droves from Syria: "The time when you could get away with tokenism and proposals for camps in Kenya, immediately slamming the brakes and quick fixes, is over." Then they immediately voted for robbing refugees of their cash and valuables, and now here we are. Although they did scrap the previous government's plans for a billion-kroner camp on a small island, currently under biological quarantine as a defunct animal disease research facility, where the only mainland connection is a ferry literally named Virus. Funny thing is the minister responsible for the Rwanda project is himself the child of an Ehtiopian refugee. He has also jumped party three times, starting out as a member of the Communist Party (M/L), then the Unity List (which began as a collection of various revolutionary socialist parties), then the Socialist People's Party (whose founder was a CIA informant lol), and then finally the Social Democrats, after he failed to establish himself in either of the others.

All the Danish right-wing parties and the governing Social Democrats (but I repeat myself) in parliament just basically threatened freedom of research by passing a resolution openly accusing universities of pushing politics masquerading as science. The resolution was proposed by Morten Messerschmidt, a convicted racist currently under police investigation for fraud with EU funds, and sociologist Henrik Dahl, who insisted he was a reasonable center-leftist until he ran for the libertarian party, his latest grift was selling anti-idpol lapel pins.

Sweden’s government faces no-confidence vote over rental laws Sweden's government is at risk of collapsing on Monday, with a no-confidence vote taking place that could force snap elections. Heading into the vote on Monday, three scenarios are on the table: Prime Minister Stefan Löfven could simply resign, a snap election could be triggered before next year’s general election or some form of political comprise could be reached — saving the Social Democrat and Green Party coalition minority government at the last minute. Despite Covid-19 restrictions still being in force, all 349 members of parliament have been called in for the 10:00 am (0800 GMT) vote on the no-confidence motion, filed on Thursday by the far-right Sweden Democrats. The Sweden Democrats filed the motion after the Left Party, which has propped up the government, announced it was planning to seek support for such a motion itself in protest against a government project to ease rent controls, denouncing the move as an attack on the Swedish social model. The conservative Moderate Party and the Christian Democrats have also announced their support for the move. If defeated, Löfven would go down as the first Swedish head of government to be defeated in a vote of no confidence. “For a long time it looked like the minority government would make it until the end of the term, but the built-in divisions in the government’s base have finally become too big,” political commentator Mats Knutson told public broadcaster SVT. If voted out, Löfven would have a week to either announce a snap election or resign, leaving it up to speaker of parliament Andreas Norlen to open negotiations with the parties to find a new prime minister, which analysts note could end up being Löfven again. The political crisis was triggered by a project, which is still in its preliminary stages, to reform the country’s rent controls and potentially opening the door for landlords to freely set rents for newly constructed apartments. Among the left the proposal has been seen as being at odds with the Swedish social model and a threat to tenants. To overthrow the government, a strict absolute majority of 175 votes out of the 349 parliamentary seats is needed. Together, the four parties have 181 seats. Last-ditch efforts to appease the Left Party, which holds 27 seats, have been in vain. An offer to invite stakeholders in the rental market for negotiations was dismissed as “not serious and political theatre aimed at stalling the process”, by Left Party leader Nooshi Dadgostar https://www.thelocal.se/20210621/swedens-government-faces-no-confidence-vote-over-rental-laws/ Jon Pod Van Damm has issued a correction as of 09:11 on Jun 21, 2021 |
