I gravitated towards the Greens, eventually even joining the party itself.

The Linke is a party I grudgingly accept exists, but I've learned enough about DDR-history I can't bring myself to trust a party that was once the SED, a party leading the corrupt state apparatus ...

Or you get film news websites or critics asking if "Hollywood is finally ready to forgive Polanski" whenever his movies come out, as if that was the problem (although tbf, I've seen these sorts of headlines concerning other directors, like Mel Gibson for example) or calling him enfant terrible.

It's the same thing with John Paul II, lol. Like, some people here get freaking rabid whenever you mention that some "great Poles" maybe weren't the greatest

Well, did Polanski at least get pelted with trash while visiting the school?

I checked and he didn't call the allegations false, but "ambiguous and complex", and said that "he doesn't feel that he has any right to make a moral assessment on Polanski's life" on the basis of "shaky media reports". Here's the entire statement in English if you're interested https://www.filmschool.lodz.pl/en/news/1585,oswiadczenie-rektora-ws-wizyty-romana-polanskiego.html

Coincidentally there have been some allegations of abuse in this school. 'Nuff said, this guy is not the rector anymore

Years back in Cinema Discusso people would criticize the judge because he wanted to throw the book at Polanski but the judge was absolutely right to want to toss that plea agreement it was an absolute joke considering what Polanski had actually done. And Polanski fled to France and shacked up with I think a 15 year old he was an unrepentant monster and creep.

Yeah you already had the ethereal caste being very power-of-suggestion-y which was fine to give them just a little edge, but subtlety not allowed.

Like Shas'O Kais is what I maintain my type of tau love for, his dialogue with Thule in Dark Crusade was great and established the feel I liked them so much for, it'll always be great: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrHhS5IkRR0

Thule: You will not squelch our faith so easily, alien.

Kais: The Tau empire will respect your faith human, if you would only see reason!

Thule: Our faith is in the emperor of man, alien. To bow to you is heresy.

Kais: Then you follow the path of destruction.

Thule: Better destruction, than bondage.

Kais: So says the slave, to the free man.

Like he gives the other commanders chance after chance as the HQ battles progress, often only going "Alright then, you've chosen fire warriors" when they're still playing hardass with him at their doorstep.

And like the tau commanders actually caring about their dudes, from the same Thule dialogue too.

Kais: Surrender human! If not for you, then for the greater good.

Thule: The greater good is coming to you from my bolter, alien!

Kais: Do the deaths of your soldiers mean so little to you? Are you that mad?

Thule: Do the deaths of yours mean so much to you, alien? Are you that weak?

it's one of those "you don't have to do much to wrap things up, you can leave things vague, animal house it even, but instead he did a magnificent own goal to retroactively significantly damage his series" sorts of endings.

It's so inconsistent with the writing of the rest of the series I feel like something happened behind the scenes in the last chunk of chapters, the writing and story quality's been so weird as of late.

Yeah, I like how the manga thread put out a bunch of nuclear theories and the actual ending somehow was even worse than those. Like the sheer level of "gently caress you all. i'm done!" in that ending would almost be admirable if the contents weren't so despicable and out of nowhere. Like I can't even defend the show anymore because it's clear that Isayama didn't know what he was doing or even if he did, just pointing to this ending just demolishes that talking point.

Still, AoT up to the end of season 3 is very good anime and just pretend it ends there. No need to watch season 4. If I were that anime studio I'd scramble to rewrite that entire ending completely. I'd exercise creative control at that point and do better. Isayama's getting paid either way so no need to self-immolate.

Edit: Season 3's ending is actually really good too. It's set up very early on and the conclusion is super satisfying. There's no stingers and actually a pretty nice ending to it all without completely resolving everything in the setting.

He's really, really good at kinetic action and creepy giant naked people. Everything else is poop from a butt, though he's definitely improved from the beginning.

The official translation of the chapter makes things not quite as bad as the initial fan translations did, but on the scale of if you blew off only below the knee instead of your entire leg

Edit:

I would argue up until even the last handful of chapters it was very, very good and still retained the holy poo poo level of the rest of the series. The entire character progression for Gabi is fantastic, she is easily my favorite character in the series. And then the final chapter just pisses almost all the goodwill for the series down its leg. I do agree, they should rewrite the anime version, hell, if it ended at the end of chapter 138, that'd be fine if abrupt. But 139 actively ruins multiple characters, it's rather impressive. It's why I feel like someone else had a hand in it because it's so weirdly different from the rest of the series.

I never watched game of thrones but I hear that ended real badly and I'm also seeing people compare this to that. I've definitely seen worse endings but this final chapter was very not good through like 90% of it

Totally not mark is going to do a separate video on the final chapter later so that should be good for a laugh.

I heard about Gabi and she does sound hella interesting but even at his best Isayama doesn't treat his women characters all that well and in those later chapters it seems like old favorites just get shafted big time. I rather forego seeing a really interesting character to preserve the old ones in my little time capsule. It's a brutal setting but some of those plot points I've read just.. suck.

In a nutshell.

I wrote this in a discord when the final chapter hit: You know you have that one awkward friend or acquaintance where you have that conversation while you're both high that you may end your friendship with them after where they say "you know man, the world is so hosed up. so much hate and poo poo man. i hate it. what would happen if we just, like, wiped out most of humanity. those who were left would just start over!" Isayama is that friend.

I really don't like it when people try to find reasons why I should watch Roman Polanski or Woody Allen movies or whatever as some sort of a justification for them doing so (speaking as someone who used to watch them). The whole "gotta separate art from the artist" thing. Like, watch what you want when it comes to films, it's not something I care about -- but don't try and persuade me to as a way of justifying it to yourself. It's not something I particularly want to do.

Hey now, in Yang's defence that mobile space-fortress he blew up was trespassing on his property.

At the very least, LOGH is one of the few long-running stories that ends well given that the writer laid the groundwork for every twist and turn well in advance. The writer also finished the book series before it was adapted, so eat poo poo GRRM. And Rothfuss too.

To say that you got to separate art from the artist when talking about Woody Allen movies is particularly hilarious. Those Woody Allen movies where Woody Allen stars as Woody Allen and is usually in some sort of weird/lovely relationship, almost always with women far younger than he is.
