the I'm kinda sad that the MOT skills get a little left behind when there are breakout stars amongst the other three. I would have liked something like Savoir Faire or Hand-Eye Coordination chiming in more with a bit more oomph

Motorics 'suffers' from basically... being competent. Savvy aside, they nearly all just give straight up correct and useful info. Even Interfacing other than like, a couple of spots fails to be as spooky as it could be. I am also sad you never actually get to Savoir Faire to Sam Bo chop someone like it suggests in the description.

High Interfacing is fun, your fingers are real horny for touching things. High Composure is great, because there are a lot of interesting usually nearly impossible to see red check scenes. High Reaction Speed gives you a lot of lines that otherwise wouldn't be there. High Perception is a super useful in a zillion different ways. The only kinda dud is Hand/Eye Coordination, which barely pops up. Has a few key moments though, like shooting down the corpse and getting everyone's favourite Ace's High/Low thoughts.

I would have liked something like Savoir Faire or Hand-Eye Coordination chiming in more with a bit more oomph I went high MOT + average INT/PSY and low FYS (but with Shivers signature - I think 3/3/1/5 overall distribution?) for my original playthrough and it felt perfect, so I'd advise whoever's currently playing a high MOT to stick around with it a bit further. High Perception is awesome, Hand/Eye and Savoir Faire may pipe up not that frequently, but when they do it's very memorable, and I remember Composure letting you out-composure Evrart among other great moments, so it's definitely not as basic as it may seem. Though tbf I also went high enough on Inland Empire/Volition/Empathy + Art Cop so the synergy with all of it just worked. Getting back into the game first time since the original cut and have a bit mixed feelings about the V/A. I get it allows many more people to enjoy it which is great, and I also enjoy having characters like Kim, Cunoesse or Joyce fully voice-acted, but man do I miss some of the old voices like Garte and especially Cuno. The new one is adequate, but the original had such an extremely deranged ultra Scouse energy that each new line made me smile. Narrator and skills... I like the voice itself, and I know there's an argument that 20 separate voices could make the experience too disjointed, but that's exactly why I found the original so entertaining. In my head I always heard the skills voices as very diverse, with some being dry, some dramatic, and some full-on Horrific Tie-like, so having one voice, even some subtle reading changes depending on the skill notwithstanding, makes it much less dynamic and dilutes the experience for me, and I'd be enjoying the game much less if I kept it on. Maybe I just have overactive aural imagination lol. I guess at least I can always keep it minimal with Classic/Psychological, though I do wish Classic mode would also include actual Classic, i.e. the option for old V/Os as well.

So I just finished playing the first go around. I have to admit, I really didn't think I would get something so... not absolutely miserable. I was ready for some sort of miserable gutpunch. Mind, I did a very straight-and-narrow approach so I don't know if the game really responds back if you're some sort of twitchy fascist speed monster. Next time. It was good. Really good. I can't wait to try and convince people I know to read through this and hopefully enjoy it as much as I did.

At least my current very high Authority, high Volition, abysmal MOT Harry not only told him to gently caress off with his tinyass murderchair but won a number of staring contests with him (the Hardies too). But perhaps both enable the same things (except MOT does it out of actual cool rather than defensive insecurities like PSY), that seems fair and would make sense. Inland Empire and Perception also seem to pick up on many of the same things, just with a very different spin on them (perception flatly describes what Harry picks up from his surroundings and leaves the rest to Big Brain ; while Inland tells Harry how he should feel about what he's seeing without necessarily really saying why or *what* he's even really noticing). It feels like the game is written with that hectic feel in mind and it would work perfectly with different voices. The voice actors in your dreams have distinct voices and it’s good. I’m playing for the first time and I go back and forth between really liking the voice acting and feeling like I’d enjoy it more as just whatever voices I make up in my head. Either way, no big deal and it’s good they give you options. This video game made me cry today. Empathy check telling you Acele is realizing her music making is an “empty fantasy,” feeling childish/useless.

On the one hand I think the characters just having a couple of introduction and important part voicelines was a very good way of doing it, you got a sample of what they would sound like and some voice lines would tell you everything you needed to know about them (gently caress DOES CUNO CARE?) On the other hand, the horrific necktie is fully voiced.

How “mechanical” is this game, i.e. how important is it to have a well thought out set of skills to overcome the challenges it will throw in my way? I’ve read the guides for character creation but it’s hard not to think just max some and dump others to see all the way down one path, then play it again the other way to see those options. Is it “game-y” or basically a visual novel

There's not really any wrong choices, its all about what you want. The biggest thing seems to be "<4 or 4+" as the cutoffs for a few things, especially early on. A good idea is to put your signature skill in something that isn't that high though, so its easier to boost up that skill family later if you want. That's the only piece of advice I'd offer, don't use it to double down on your highest skill families because it won't do anything, you're already unlikely to max them out.

Is it “game-y” or basically a visual novel much closer to visual novel. you can make things "easier" if you know where to get which thoughts that provide what bonuses you want, but that kind of misses the point, and moreover an utter botchcop with 1/1/1/1 stats will finish the game just fine (and give you a reason to replay )

In terms of "missing content" pretty much any build will miss as much as any other, give or take. Like a 4/2/2/4 will play different than a 2/4/4/2 but neither is a better experience. And as is repeated over and over, don't savescum on your first playthrough, you can progress while failing checks just fine and sometimes failing is better/funnier. Unless, you know, it kills you. (There is at least one check where if you SUCCEED it's a game over lol)
