Building your own PC from scratch isn’t for everyone because of how complicated it is, but there are always going to be local independent computer technicians who will do the work for you and still charge way less than the likes of Dell. They’re far easier to get ahold of, and all the ones I’ve dealt with have been very helpful both in picking out parts beforehand and making sure everything works properly once it’s set up.
This is not universally true. In there are parts of the US where it is impossible to be a tech for individual person clients and make a living. Just due to low little people are willing to pay for computer repair versus how long an individual repair can take.

And one recurring theme in the podcast is what a game is actually saying with its mechanics. In the episode on Dawn of Man they discuss how strange it is that the game completely leaves out the massive societal changes that came with the change from nomadic to settled. The period massively drove specialisation and stratification of society, but none of it is reflected in the game's mechanics. In other words, people in Dawn of Man don't live in a society. That observation made me look at some other strategy games and I realised how weird it is that a game like Surviving Mars barely acknowledges society existing either.

I don't think you can start that kind of discussion withougt having a good grasp of the mechanics of a game. I consider it an important to engage with games not just on the textual level but subtext as well, and the mechanics are often the subtext of games. Like the Ur-example of Sim City demonstrates, the foundations of a game's mechanics are often deeply rooted in how someone sees the world, and that in turn influences what a game actually says.

And also, Rowan Kaiser was correct regarding Stellaris.

I think in the US it's possible in densely urban areas where you constantly have customers, but at least in the Midwest every computer repair store I've worked with has either gone out of business or had to partner with some larger business as their IT on retainer to stay afloat.

Specifically Mauler's and his crew are known mainly in the thread for doing an 11 hour stream that heavily tried to mock Jenny's fairly standard take on the Joker movie. I think it kicked off with them making fun of her makeup and generally be weird and lovely. Around the release Jenny's replies just had a constant gallop between

-What weirdo would watch an 11 hour video?
-You idiot! It's just dudes hanging around streaming they don't talk about her the whole time!
-Oh, cool, well what did they have to say?
-You have to see it, I can't really sum it up. It's super smart though.
-Okay what are the timestamps?
-Wow! So you can take it out of context? You need to see the whole thing, I can't just rip parts out!
-So, it's an 11 hour video...

Repeat until you yearn for death.

In fairness, this doesn't mean he can't have good points or have chud free stuff. Just a heads up before you dive too far into his stuff.

Edit: Hell, I almost linked a Brad Jones video here because I liked his takedown of the bad Clarice show's pilot. I went to get the name, and went "Hmm, Cinema Snob...Brad, why does that sound familiar?" Still not sure how I ended up subbed.

Yeah. One of my favourite bits about this is hidden in a donoteat City Skylines video where he narrates some small backstories for one or two people housed in apartment complexes that he then demolishes in order to accommodate widening a freeway to illustrate how such a simple planning decision affects and can even ruin people's lives long-term.

They both seem to ignite the same kind of fanboy brain worms and I'm not sure why outside of just making a new, kinda edgy take on beloved pop culture characters? I think the new, edgy take is enough. The Last Jedi still gives me the vapours and the less said about Rise of Skywalker is for the better. Though I am more chill over the fact that there has been so many interpretations of Batman and Superman that a lovely movie or two isn't going to kill off the franchises.

While I'm sure this is an absolute nightmare for SEPW and sympathize with his position, it seems like half his problems come down to not understanding what he was buying and not understanding how to ask for help.
  • He bought a professional workstation from Dell's business division. This generally means less handholding when it comes to sales and support, which is what he's experiencing. (His fault.)
  • The bundled wireless keyboard and mouse didn't work out of the box. There's probably some arcane pairing ritual he needed to do though OOTB I would expect it to "just work". (Mostly Dell's fault.)
  • The system didn't include an wifi card by default. This is a reasonable default for businesses as they will have wired networking 90%+ of the time and know to order a wifi card if they need one. (His fault.)
  • The wifi card he bought to install himself was cheap and unsurprisingly had worse speeds than his old computer. (His fault.)
  • The system used a mechanical HDD as the system drive instead of an SSD. This is definitely unreasonable and I would be mad if I bought a $1000+ system ITYOOL 2021 that was configured like that, but he should have noticed it when he was configuring the system. (Equal fault.)
  • He tried to get a service technician which took weeks because they kept canceling on him. Also it's unclear if the guy that finally came out actually did anything. (Dell's fault.)
  • He tried to return the system, but because he bought it from their business division it was past the return date at this point. (His fault, though also pretty BS on Dell's part.)
  • His system supports NVMe SSDs, which are recommended these days, but only through a proprietary add-on board :catstare: (Dell's fault, seriously WTF.)
  • He bought a SATA SSD instead but couldn't figure out how to install it. (His fault.)
  • Even after he gets it properly installed it still isn't recognized. (This is probably Dell's fault as their BIOS on Precision workstations requires you to manually enable each SATA port when you install a new device, something nobody else requires, or his mobo is just broken which would also be Dell's fault.)

Get bashed, platonist!

Yeah, I sympathise but... There’s no universe in which he employed the proper amount of research and care prior to purchase and forgot to get a wifi card in a machine for which wireless is his only option. Sinilarly, how the hell do you drop four digits on a computer without knowing that it boots from a mechanical drive?

Patricia Taxton also did a pair of videos on the 'objective critique' mauler and his buddies expouse. They're very good, but what I found really revealing was the streams Taxton and Jack Saint did watching the 'Every Frame a Pause' crew watch Taxton's videos. Yes it was a recursive nightmare of people watching people watching a video made in response to another response video but it really demonstrates that the 'EFaP' (ugh) crew cannot begin to understand a structured argument and it was very funny to see them pause after a hypothetical leading question, talk about the obvious answer to the question for 5 minutes then furiously backpedal after playing another ten seconds of the video because it agrees with what they just said.

They are also extraordinarilly petty and disrespectful but any slight dig or joke Patricia made about them was treated as the gravest insult and proof of bad faith. Despite their constant appeals to 'watch the whole thing' to avoid criticism of their own 10 hour reviews and streams it won't suprise you that despite streaming for three hours the EFaP crew couldn't even finish watching a 40 minute video.

Yep. The only way to get a decent graphics card without fighting scalpers is to buy it attached to a PC on a small premium over buying the parts separately.

For those who want the "fun" of struggling with what part isn't working, hey, go nuts. You might even save a bit of money too if you don't end up with bum parts and have the time and stress to burn. I'm old and tired I guess.
