I felt pretty good going in with a Thinker build the first go through. The Visual Calculus checks also are a real unique thing.

I would agree with this. I’m glad I went Thinker because it allows me to learn lots about the world and its history naturally, as well as learn as much as I can about the main case so I have all that in my pocket for subsequent playthroughs. Plus it means there’s more fun to be had when I go for the more psychic drug addict run next time and it all goes insane

Here's a funny video about that Alone in the Dark PS3 game I mentioned in here recently. I said at the time it felt like a game designed by someone who'd never played a game in their life but the term "overproduced" also works really well.

It had some neat ideas but, well.

It's such a strange..entity. It was a success, but it killed the franchise. Atari threatened to sue bad reviews, because every iteration of Atari has been run by colossal dipshits, the PS2/Wii version was made by the people who did ObsCure which its own...thing and man, I dunno

I played some PS Now yesterday and I have a feeling they made some subtle behind-the-scenes changes because it seems to both look and play better (less lag) than before, honestly it really doesn't feel any different from playing locally on a PS3, even locally (although I am old and do suck at games). If you're hard-wired into your internet and your ISP isn't pure garbage, I strongly recommend giving PS Now a go if that $1 deal is still going instead of trying to keep a PS3 going, that way lies pain and misery.

I'm unsure if reading that should get my hopes up about PS Now eventually coming to Australia. Deliberately crippled national broadband network aside, the discussion about Disco Elysium in this thread is a reminder that the government will probably go out of its way to prevent it because it could be used to simulate drugs or shooting a police officer or make Rupert Murdoch feel slightly inconvenienced.

PS Now games are region-specific, at least to a degree, and Disco Elysium isn't on PS Now anyway.

Is Australian broadband an issue internally or are your speeds only bad when you leave Australia and connect to international servers? Like if you live in a major city in Australia can you connect to servers in the same city fine?

I'm pretty sure you can set up a PSN account that's based out of either the US or a European country and buy it digitally from there with wallet codes. If you really want a disc that's an issue, though.

My internet is relatively good as far as Australian internet goes (I am in a major city), but as I understand it our internet is notably slower than the rest of developed world due to the location of the continent and some political promises that resulted in in a cheaper and barely futureproof broadband infrastructure makeover instead of the good one the losing political party proposed.

Streaming can definitely get a bit spotty, but I assume the reason we still don't have PS Now or even Stadia is because a lot of people just wouldn't really be able to use it here.

Disco Elysium is a seperate issue really and didn't get released because it has drugs in it. We're the reason morphine was renamed to Med-X in the Fallout games!

I've been playing through The Witness, seeing as they were giving it away for free.

I like the puzzles and the meta-puzzle world, but all the text and speech should have been taken out, and the game would have been vastly better. It was basically the exact same reaction I had to Braid ten years ago, and I wasn't surprised at all to learn both games are from the same guy.

Jonathan Blow is like a freshman in his second week of Philosophy 101 who now considers himself a deep intellectual thinker, but is actually an insufferable piece of poo poo.

Nah, the quotes are good, they serve a purpose that fits the game, and they're completely optional content you don't need to click on at all (I actually don't know if they're tracked anywhere and they certainly don't unlock anything, so who cares if you miss them). The quotes picked, as pretentious as they can be, do contribute to the tone of the game and some of them relate to the area you find them in. They're religious or metaphysical quotes from various places and some of them are quite lengthy, but the overall idea of them is contemplation, the value of knowledge, and the search for answers. Wanting to know more about the world and what it's for.

This is the big theme of the game, and the recordings can add to this if you want them. They actually use these orange recordings in a hidden area later on to humanise the idea a bit by having the people reading them have a few conversations about the recordings (one even says 'you know how easily we could slide into pomposity') and I think another one is about how they haven't got enough secular, atheistic recordings about faith and why that is. (Mostly because it's harder to get quotes from Atheists that are saying anything of their own instead of just attacking religion, and partly because they have a limited budget and already have too many quotes from Feynman). But some of those do feel like the game taking a step closer to a story that it doesn't really tell.

It's also kinda funny when they're placed on purpose but not in a way you'd realise. One of the earlier quotes you can find is on top of the big door that leads you out of the starting fort where you have to complete the first chain of panels. It starts "I am standing at a threshold, about to enter a room" and then rambles a bit about being a tiny dot on the planet hurtling through space, and something about four dimensions and entropy and yes it is a bit wanky. But the quote finishes with "make sure my passage of the threshold is an entrance, not an exit" and this doorway is the entrance to the game proper... And once you've got a lot further into the game there's a way to make it the exit door to find the secret ending with Jonathan Blow and a jar of piss.

Complaining (and respeccing to sorceries for certain spell) worked. Just casting pestilent mist around with the lingering ring to keep it up most of the time and use the NPC summon to distract the boss most of the fight. And yes, summoning increases the boss' HP but said spell deals a % of the max HP so actually bringing a distraction is good.

gently caress Midir, I clowned him on PC with my pyromancer using lightning spear and that cute spell. Now back to my STR build.

I was having trouble plowing through the two DLCs on NG+4 last night since I never took my character past level 100 or so, UNTIL I summoned. Lots of cool people still summonable in the woods of Ariandel, and also from the second bonfire in Ringed City where you can easily get a party of 4 badasses to take on the stairs area down to the Filinanore's church. I also discovered that having both Lapp/Gael NPCs for Demon Prince absolutely clowns that fight. It's very cool that AoA and Ringed City are difficult enough to still be a fun challenge even with an online party of 4 high level dudes. I loving love the DLC so much

I made a million souls in under 30 mins lol

It took me like two or three full evenings of attempts to finally beat Midir, but it was probably the best feeling of beating any Soulsbourne boss. Orphan of Kos was probably harder for me, but I never felt like I had mastered that fight, I just finally got lucky enough to bumble through it which isn't nearly as satisfying.
