Ayy, I finally was able to order a 5600x at MSRP! I've posted in here several times over the past few months but I guess It's finally time to actually pull the trigger on this thing. There is no "keeping an eye out" for a current or even last gen gpu. It's scalper prices, pre-built, or actively struggling for one (MC camping and hoping, shuffling, bb drops). You will not be getting one otherwise.

In the process of building my system. My motherboard has 2 slots for nvme drives, a pcie 3 and a pcie 4. My ssd is a pcie 3. Does it matter which slot I use? I would like to keep the pcie 4 slot open for when/if I ever get a pcie 4 ssd.

I wish to purchase more hard drives, and am located in the US. I want both a larger SSD for gaming, and a couple of large hard drives for cheaper bulk storage. The current gaming drive is a 1tb ssd, and I have an empty M.2 (pcie 3.0) slot. The hard drives are several 1tb ones. I don't know what brands are good or anything these days. I was hoping to spend maybe $400-500, maybe more if I get an external enclosure to use while transferring files so I don't have to figure out which physical drive is which letter in window. Also, the manufacturer's spec sheet says SATA slots 5 and 6 won't work if I plug in something in the M.2, if that affects anything.

In theory, by using the 3.0 slot you're sharing bandwidth with anything else hanging off the chipset (the 4.0 slot is wired direct to the CPU), but you'd be hard-pressed to notice anything unless you're using an extremely high performance drive while also stressing the system in some very unnatural ways and looking for the (likely microscopic) difference.

It’s more expensive usually (current price issues notwithstanding) but if you’re not comfortable building yourself, the piece of mind is worth it now that you’ve got good choices that you can at least easily tinker with down the road.

'Best value' is just as subjective as 'best' is. The 11400 makes a strong argument for being the best value CPU for many builders right now, hence me not adding 'value' to my post. I just think you're overly hung up on small details here, and I bet if I go through your post history I'll find you own a 5800X and you're defending it against my perceived slight against it over the 5600X. I get your point about invisible asterisks, but pretty much all of the advice in this thread operates on that level. We've spent ages researching our own builds, and are using that knowledge to try to make informed recommendations to other people based on their use case. If we were to acknowledge every caveat in every post the thread would become unreadable. I listened to the poster's needs and recommended the 5600X as the best gaming CPU for them. If you think that recommendation was bunk, then by all means post your own take on it.

How about a toaster? That one may be overkill depending on how often you'll use it, but they make a few different models. Sabrent and StarTech are good brands. If you are reading SSDs or 2.5" drives, one of the SATA to USB cable could work too.

I'm upgrading my husband's PC for video games and Android emulators, we were planning on spending $800ish. Ryzen 7 5800x (purchased, $450) Scythe Mugen 5 Rev.B ($50) MSI B550-A Pro ($140) Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 DRAM 3000MHz C15 (reused from his current PC) GTX 1070 (reused, good enough for now for his 1080p60 monitors and lol buying GPUs in 2021) I had a few (hopefully) quick questions: Do you still need to update the bios on B550 boards, or are they usually compatible with Zen 3 CPUs out of the box? It sounds like it's easy to flash the bios nowadays, but I have zero experience with it and it makes me a little nervous. I had budgeted for RAM before I realized that he currently has DDR4 already; would it be a big, noticeable jump in performance to buy something newer/faster? If we skip the RAM, I'm likely looking at replacing his 4-year old Corsair PSU (550W, 5yr warranty) instead.
