This is Stella. She is a big ball of nervous anxiety because she was a race dog and was most likely treated poorly. She wins my “Sweetest Dog In The World” award every day. She is quite old now and has a permanently injured hind leg from racing, so she mostly hops around like a kangaroo around between naps. But sometimes I catch a glimpse of her doing hypercharged spin zoomies in the backyard, or sprinting from one side of the yard to the other when she thinks no one is looking Look at that old white snoot. That’s Nacho, he frequently zonks out and forgets to keep his mouth closed. There’s also a dumb fat orange cat but I don’t feel like searching for a picture of him. Edit: Aw man I guess I’m too dumb to attach pictures.

Spoeank posted:That's what it's saying. I'm sorry but you're being insanely obtuse about this to the point that it feels intentional I found it. https://medium.com/swlh/money-can-buy-you-happiness-22947f4198db The full image: You can just see the fair hiring statement at the bottom: the employer is UMSL. It's the University of Missouri: Saint Louis. This is typically how teaching jobs are advertised, the minimum salary is not something the employer has control over and is probably set either by the university of missouri, or by the state legislature. Does it suck rear end that we underpay teachers? Yes. Was that tweet of a cropped screenshot of an online ad, lacking the context, actually a good way to foster or engage in that discussion? No. I'm not picking some dumbass obtuse hill to die on, I'm reacting in the same throwaway manner to tweets as everyone else, but my reaction - that a minimum doesn't necessarily mean the actual wage offered to someone with the desired Masters - was disfavored by the twitter-reaction crew in this thread because it wasn't maximally outraged, so I got piled on immediately for it, and I'm disinclined to just shut up about it when that happens. I feel like I ought to at least put a small amount of effort into defending what I say when I don't think I'm wrong? It can turn into a stupid derail and if that's the case I'm sorry, but this is a recurring theme around here that I would like to try to push back against at least a bit. I do appreciate all the doggo pics though.

You know what's cool in a meeting? When multiple people ask "who scheduled this meeting?" and no one can answer. Also when your boss emails you directly during the meeting to say "hey sorry this isn't very useful" lol

So it turns out my psoriasis might be something else entirely. I'm being referred to a specialist at Rush University here in Chicago. I haven't had pets since almost ten years ago, but there's a cat in my building who likes to visit my windows and meow at passerby on the sidewalk. He also likes to be territorial and aggressive to other animals. Meet Popcorn: He's currently meowing away in the front yard right now. Guess he didn't have time to fashion a poopknife

Man, I can't imagine going out and getting a masters unless I was in a career that definitely required it, or had a job that was offering a pay bump to get it. I feel like I've seen enough horror stories of people with Master's degrees only to get locked out of lots of jobs because they're considered overqualified.

Spoeank posted:How about (currently listed as masters preferred at usml) Somehow neither of those positions seem like custodians. Much more like jobs in academia, for which the pay is typically on specified scales dependent on degree, experience, and position, and with administrative requirements for job listings in which the minimum pay for the lowest-acceptable qualifications is listed, and for which a candidate with a masters is significantly higher than the base salary, because that's how public schools work, very frequently if not universally? Like, my original point still stands completely: it's not necessarily the case that, for the job listed, the desired Masters candidate is stuck with a $15/hr pay. Feel free to take a look at average pay rates for academic advisors and engagement producers if you like! If OP wants to make a point about how badly underpaid people with degrees can be, I'm fully on board, but boy would it be nice if they had an illustrative example that is actually illustrative rather than misleading? Is that really such a loving outrageous position for me to take?

Skwirl posted:Aren't teaching positions usually salaried? Uni teaching positions depend on how many classes you're teaching, at least until you've got a full load. Increasingly few do: your typical "adjunct professors" and "lecturers" etc. don't. Primary and secondary school teachers are more frequently full-time and salaried, but their incomes may still be expressed as hourly, especially because many of these positions do not guarantee summer school but may have it as an option, which affects salary; and of course, many are union jobs, e.g., non-exempt, so overtime is paid (although lol most teachers do tons of unpaid overtime as, practically, prep work extends well beyond what is officially compensated). I feel like I've seen enough horror stories of people with Master's degrees only to get locked out of lots of jobs because they're considered overqualified. When I was in process development (scaling up R&D formulations from the lab to a full-scale production process), I dealt with Product Management a lot. They only wanted to talk business-speak, so I decided to get an MBA partially subsidized by the company. I can't objectively say having it on my resume cost me interviews, but I do know every interview I have had since getting it the hiring manager assumes I want to go into management. Also I can say people I am now friends with through the MBA program have experienced both being told they are overqualified for a position due to having the degree, or being offered horrendously low salaries because they don't have any real-world experience using their degree.
