All I can tell you about West Bengal is this is where Kolkata is. The TMC is a centrist party, there were a number of land disputes during the reign of the CPI(M) but it really fell out of favor in west bengal after an incident between protestors and the police that ended up with dozens of people killed. The TMC campaigned on the premise that the CPI(M) was entirely responsible for what happened. There were murmurs recently that the TMC was behind some of the violence that happened but I don't speak bengali so I can't speak to the validity of any of that.

The CPIM got wiped out in West Bengal too. Kerala is basically their last stronghold. Edit: The thing with Mamata that the BJP latches onto is that she shows too much favoritism to Muslims. I wonder if there was a strategic voting situation where many Communists voted TMC to stave of the BJP, or even worse, many communists shifted to the BJP (Like the PCF to FN shift in France). Basically the BJP/RSS run on the "one language, one religion, one culture" majoritarian/populist platform. They and Modi came to power in 2014. If you look at the 2014 parliament map, the BJP map has very high overlap of the Hindu speaking area map (most populated northern India gangeti belt). The BJP became more popular in the height of Trump maniac and won more seats in 2019. You can see on the map BJP expanded into Hindu adjacent areas, and also the small states in North Eastern.   I think this state election sees the push back of anti-populist government, which reflect the general trend of the world. All populist government has handled the Corona badly. I honestly don't understand how in state level election, a party can go from 0 sat to almost half of the seats, and how the Communist ruled West Bengal for 30+ years. The thing is that the BJP is moving into areas where the one language thing doesn't fly like South India, and West Bengal. Hindi seems to be making inroads there too. I met some international students from Karnataka and Kerala recently who were conversational in Hindi.
