Accelerationism is bad, I know but I genuinely don't see any way to swing the pendulum left by bowing down to Starmer's lot so why do it? Burn labour to the ground and rebuild it after everyone wanting cushy careers in sensible opposition is set afloat on an iceberg.

If there's something to take away from 30 years of Labour boosting neoliberalism it's that the left supporting a Labour Party that offers them crumbs does nothing good. Socialist ideas just become harder and harder to imagine for the public as realistic, to the point that even limp social democratic ideas are dismissed as implausible fantasy.

I'm not going accept the least worst option anymore. It's not accelerationism that makes me want Labour destroyed to make way for a new party of the left, it's quite the opposite. The crumbs aren't enough. The little New Labour offers is not enough. Accepting the status quo is a reactionary position.

Ignoring just quite whatever the hell is wrong with your palette, making cauliflower cheese with Sunday lunch is an absolute pro-move even aside from the deliciousness of the cauliflower cheese itself, because (a)it makes your bubble & squeak so much better, & (b)since you're making a nice mustardy cheese sauce anyway you might as well make a bunch extra & do croque monsieur for lunch on Monday.

I legit enjoy the leftovers from Sunday lunch more than the lunch itself.

Properly boiled broccoli is delicious.

I never got the broccoli hate until I stayed at a friends house and discovered the taste and texture of broccoli thats been on the boil for far too long. It should have crunch! I'd rather eat it raw than overboiled again.

All this meat chat reminds me, there was a thing the other week where (I think) a study plotting reduction in beef consumption against reduction in cow emissions was seized up by the Mail, and somehow turned into "Joe Biden's climate plan means you'll be rationed to one burger a month", to predictable outrage.

Which made me think, is that so unreasonable? I'm down to less than that anyway, without Biden telling me to, having the occasional beef burger as a treat, but lots of delicious chickpea burgers.

It's perfectly reasonable, but most people are not at all reasonable.

I eat basically no red meat, very little chicken, some fish, but shitloads of prawns, veg, tofu., etc. Seems like a pretty reasonable hierarchy of animal suffering and environmental impact (don't come at me with that seaspiracy poo poo)

Meat makes up around 10% of people's carbon emissions, it's a good idea to cut down but it's not the end of the world if people don't. The real issue is how much carbon emissions are baked into existing in a western society at the moment, so even all the meaningful changes to your lifestyle in the world won't do all the work themselves. And this further ignores that as you'd expect, the richest people in the UK are those responsible for the most carbon emissions. Indervidual action will not fix the systemic flaws that lead to climate change.

Also beef takes alot more energy (and therefore carbon emissions) per kg than fish does. There are other enviromental reasons to favour fish over land based meat, but there's msny different aspects to "environmentally friendly" and not everyone gives a poo poo about the same ones as you do.

This is why I was pescatarian for a while but I’m not sure how valid this is in the light of more recent studies that show a duck loaf of carbon is displaced from the seabed and released into the water (and then the air) through the dredging that many commercial fishers use: https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20210317-sea-bed-dredging-emits-as-much-carbon-as-aviation-study

Going back a few pages, but if Gates really gave a poo poo about 3rd world countries being able to set up large scale, affordable vaccination centres then this is the perfect moment to get behind that.

Saying that they don't currently have those facilities and then saying they shouldn't build them is continuing the status quo where US companies make the drugs and then ship them over.

AZ may say they're making the drug 'at cost' but I suspect that the way they work out the cost of making the vaccine involves some very hollywood accounting.

Arla and Cathedral City do some good lactose-free mature cheddar (melts and crisps like real cheese), but I have to go all the way to big Tesco to get it. My local co-op have decided there's no interest.

I wish there were more lactose free cheeses, it'd be nice to be able to enjoy pizza without having to take lactase half an hour beforehand.

Yeah for me it's 1) that eating enough protein on a purely vegan diet would be a nightmare and probably end up requiring downright unhealthy amounts of protein powder and 2) dairy is just insanely good in cooking and the day I make margarine shortbread or dairy free caramel will be a cold day in hell

I am not vegan but the "how do you know if someone is vegan? wait 5 minutes and they'll tell you" thing always seems in practice to be the moment anyone reveals they're vegan they spend the next hour being peppered with questions about what that's like and how they manage
