From a few pages back, but where do you live in Canada? I'm from BC and grew up eating Quorn, and I still sometimes see it in grocery stores whenever I go back. Also, if you can't find substitute chicken pieces you're not looking hard enough -- the grocery stores within a few minutes' walk of my parents' house, in a pretty average middle class neighbourhood, have huge amounts of meat substitute products, including now Beyond and Impossible meat products.

Huh. I'm in Ottawa. I've looked in all the major supermarkets here (Sobeys, Loblaws/Independent, Food Basics, Real Canadian Superstore (lol what a name), Metro, Whole Foods, Walmart) and at least 4 different health food shops, AND I've searched online a few times including again just now, and no dice.

Maybe it used to be sold here but I'm pretty sure it isn't now.

I think partly BC is a more "hippy" place with more vegans so there might be more availability of different stuff there, but also I've been searching online nationally so *shrug*.

MeinPanzer posted:

I've never made it but it is apparently relatively easy to make (it's ubiquitous in east Asian cooking as a veggie substitute for poultry or pork), has a good texture, and can be very tasty; it stands out because it grills better than other similarly simple meat substitutes. The one issue is that since it's basically pure gluten it obviously isn't suitable for people who are gluten intolerant.

Seitan is really good. I've developed my own recipe which is similar to this one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NU5VFjgj1_M

... and I think it's legit good enough to make and sell. I've basically tweaked it and added a few ingredients, changed the method a bit... took me like 8 different times of cooking it and making small changes but I think I'm basically there. The key is to get as much umami in there as possible. Marmite, miso and, well, MSG... only if you're selling it to health-conscious vegans like I was intending to you probably don't want to just straight up add MSG hence my painstaking recipe development. If you're doing it for yourself then just straight up add MSG powder and it'll be better. Ultimately I haven't started a business selling it because you need to do it from a licensed commercial kitchen here and the rents are ridiculous.

MeinPanzer posted:

Proper vegetarian Chinese restaurants, especially Buddhist ones, will blow your mind what they can do with seitan or bean curd. There was one place in Philadelphia I used to go to that had like 70+ items on the menu made with just those ingredients that were insanely varied and sometimes amazingly similar to duck, pork, etc.

Yeah we used to have one in Milton Keynes which was truly excellent. They had a duck one too and it was very very rich and while I've never actually eaten duck myself, my wife said it was believably real-tasting. They also used to sell frozen vegan meats including stuff like shrimp which were excellent. Again, yeah, I think most of the good stuff is based on seitan/gluten.

Relevant to both cornuto & u brexit: I'm going TUSC for my first vote & Plaid for my second. My reasoning is that Labour are very unlikely to lose on my constituency seat anyway, & Labour losing votes to an unambiguously left wing party can't really be spun any other way (I mean, they can & will lie about it but they know what happened).

I like this thinking but we haven't got a TUSC candidate, so it's really Labour, Plaid or Green for me, and the Greens have not impressed me lately.

Then again, neither have Labour or Plaid.

The UKMT Fudge Baron

New Fudge Released!

Hey guys, happy to report that a new month’s supply of fudgey goodness is now live on the website and available for purchase!

Salted Caramel
Lemon Meringue Pie
(now with an even better recipe!)
Black Cherry - super juicy cherry pieces surrounded by fudge made with cherry juice and a drop of amaretto
Unicorn Barf - An old favourite returns in a new and improved form!
Nibblez - A new creation. We took the traditional sweet shop favourite of chocolate nibbles and melted them into our fudge for a caramely, chocolatey, crumbly flavour. Then we sprinkled some more on top, because why the hell not?

All fudge is sold in bars of nominal 100gr weight, though most are well over that. Cost is £3.50 per bar plus postage.

Use the goon code ‘Roastbeefisbest’ to get five bags for the price of four!

Isn't American fake meat much better than ours because they have GM ingredients? You'd think Brexit would be good for one thing at least.

Americans don't have Quorn because of a health scare around mycoprotein, although the evidence mycoprotein is harmful is somewhat dubious and very likely cooked up by their own fake meat industry not wanting the competition.

I guess at a push I could see giving a vote to the incumbent ex-Tory who got deselected and forced to run as an independent because he wasn't dealing with the "traveller incursions" to the satisfaction of his tory constituents, but in light of that fact I could not expect that the man's replacement on the Conservative ticket is going to be much better than the Zero Tolerance wacko.
