Turns out running on a platform of nothing, telling people they're poo poo for wanting something and screaming at anyone who pointed out that Kieth's a bit poo poo they're double Hitlers was a bit of a shotgun blast to the foot.

It might not win the next election but it's the only thing that seems like there's any future in it. The people who have houses and pensions and poo poo are all gonna loving die before the unpaid debt of the world they wanted catches up to the rest of us.

Me and my mates weren't really interested in politics until Corbyn came around and massively appealed to us as young people.

Kevino07 posted:If that's the case, I expect he'll be back in parliament sooner rather than later. Not remotely surprised either - he was basically the leader of the opposition in the Autumn. Burnham is always good until he runs for leader at which point he tacks to the centre and gets outflanked on the left (see, Ed, Corbyn). Based on my interactions with him and people I know who know him I think he's probably a bit to the left of Ed but he's always seemed afraid to show it on the national stage. Maybe his experience as mayor will give him a bit more confidence to be radical but based on past experience I'm not sure.

I thought I wouldn't care, but it's been pretty devastating to see the Tories swoop to victory after killing over 100,000 people. Can't wait to be told it's all my fault for voting for Corbyn because I wanted things to be marginally better.

It's very bad that there is no credible opposition, but it's very good that this particular useless opposition is completely eating poo poo after they hosed the left over, repeatedly, and demanded our votes, money, and graft in return. We knew Labour was almost certainly dying, the worse they do the better because the sooner it's finally dead the sooner we can try something new.

That's just under 7000 less votes than Labour got in 2019. so as a dumb american, i gotta ask: 1. how the gently caress does starmer not resign after this? like, i know the real answer is that he's a stooge for capital, but gently caress man these results seem far worse than anyone was even predicting. 2. is there even anyone in labour who could take over that doesn't suck poo poo through a straw? did they all get purged? would starmer resigning even change a single thing? i mean, props for making the united states seem like less of a shitshow, but loving christ this is dire.

There's a solid core of 20-something socialist group MP's in the Labour party, enough to get a candidate on any leadership election but most of the leftwing membership base have left the party at this point. The red Tories (probably, but who knows they really are thick as pigshit) won't be stupid enough to allow entryism to bring up another Corbyn-esque candidate.

Its also important to remember that local elections can have a far bigger impact from on the ground campaigning by volunteers. Turnout is often so low that an area getting blitzed by supporters can have a measurable bump. So Labour telling all the official people campaigning that they're going to get sacked after the elections are over and suspending hordes of volunteers is one of the biggest reasons for this loss imo.

Yeah there are still some decent people in Labour - Zarah Sultana and Claudia Webbe to name a couple - but I doubt the centrists will ever allow a leftist in again after Corbyn and even if they got in it's hard to see how they rebuild the party at this point anyway, you'd need excellent policies with Obama-tier charisma AND the ability to prevent internal sabotage.
