^^^ If I could be arsed I'd do the invincible 'think, mark' meme but with Corbyn and Kieth. Except the replies would be full of that guy going 'uh, you know that would make Corbyn the bad guy right?' :smug:

"Think Kieth! Any other leader would be twenty points ahead!"

Honestly the near future of the Labour party is going to be an ongoing series of right wing idiots refusing to interpret statements like 'the only places Labour made gains or held were places where they promised socialist policies.' They will continue trying to cluelessly drag their corpse ever rightward, never for one second admitting even as a cynical strategy to get elected at any cost, it will never work.

This will be backed up by the media conveniently switching between Labour being a unified voting bloc of working class racists (when it wants to blame the red wall for turning on Corbyn), and a party split between sensible 'centrists' and the loony left (when it wants to excuse kieth or whoever's next for not winning back the red wall).

Saudi Paul is partially responsible for the hospital closure though. A big reason Labour can't recover is that most of the big names that get media attention are just as pro-austerity and pro-privatisation as the Tories ever were and so without a very public split there's no way to convince large amounts of the public that the left will legislate in a left way.

Exactly. A lot of the current problems (as seen by the mass shedding of votes from the heartlands during the New Labour era) are because these places enthusiastically voted for a Labour government after 18 years of Conservative rule and then effectively got diddly-squat in return.

You saw it in the early Corbyn years, when TV interviewers and journalists would respond to new policies against - say - privatisation of the NHS - with "but it was Labour that ramped up the PFIs etc. etc.". And they're right. But policy-wise Labour in 2015-2019 were effectively an entirely different party from Labour in 1997-2010. Maybe some high-profile repudiations of specific New Labour policies and some purging of prominent Blairites in the early days would have got that message across.

As it was Labour were faced with the uphill battle of being trusted to do any of the great stuff they talked about because all the evidence was that 'a Labour government' was no better than the Conservatives. And under Starmer of course they seemed a lot worse because they were trying to be sensible while the Tories give the money tree a good shaking and bring the local airport back into public ownership. Left-wing policies like nationalisation of infrastructure, higher wages, community regrowth and environmentalism may consistently poll well but only when they're not explicitly flagged as 'Labour policies'.

Thanks. I took a break from politics after things turned rather gloomy. This came after I left the Labour party, when I saw that the man I voted for leader turned out to be a wreck. The final straw was when I could see that he was going to equivocate on trans rights; it's an issue that affects a number of my closest IRL friends personally. Regrets are useless, though. The decision was to spend time working on my own happiness, not to be defeated. I lost a stone, took up the habit of reading, DMed a DnD campaign for my closest friends. Life has been good.

I came back here now because I feel like my happiness isn't tied to political fortunes any more. It's a good place to fight from. I also came back now because this moment in Labour history is hilarious and I wanted to share it with you.

He's not wrong that rightwing liberals would also vote for Greens but lol for trying to make that argument from his position.

Lockleaze in Bristol has also declared and its gone from 2 Labour to 2 Green - this is the seat where the originally selected candidates were suspended from the party after demanding a terrible regional manager be sacked and that same office parachuted in absolute nobodies (not even based in the area) as replacements so I think there's a more obvious explanation for a lot of these losses to the Greens....

Eh, unless you know the area and the candidates there's little to be gained from mapping a local result onto a national scale. The overall moves are important but there's plenty of space for purely local reasons to determine a seat.

Edit: To undermine my own point I made about Lockleaze the Greens are making gains across Bristol.

Greens took 2 out of 3 Ashley seats, with the remaining going to the decent socialist Labour candidate. Funny that.

You're correct, but that one's a clear example of the 'woke mob' trope, along with it being in retrospect hilarious how wound up Tories got about a group of gay men playing sports in the park and having a bit of a self-referential laugh by replacing the hammer throw with the handbag throw and so on. Truly terrifying woke mob behaviour.

I saw some population map posted in the last couple of days which basically said that young professionals are getting out of London at a younger age so they can have a place in the Home Counties instead of sleeping 4 to a room in zone 6, and that they're having an impact on the traditionally tory composition of those areas.

Local councilor seems like one of those jobs that is absolutely soul-destroying to do well but incredibly rewarding (at least financially) to do shittily. A good councilor is basically doing nothing but having to fight for people in the very worst of situations in between being blamed because someone spoke a foreign language in the shop. A poo poo one just turns up to one meeting every six months to pick up their money and rakes in the bribes from property developer.

Depends what you mean by 'local councillor'.
Round here, you have to be a County Councillor to get paid - I think it's around £13k pa
If you are a Town Councillor it is unpaid (other than for expenses). You get nothing except incessant complaints about Dog Poo, Litter, and 17 year olds driving round the streets like maniacs. (Plus of course 20 million complaints about things that you really can't do anything about because they come under County not Town responsibilities). Oh and the relocation of the kids' playground which is costing £85k and which half the town can't see why it needs doing as it's been in its current location for literally decades (before I was born!) and all the Yummy Mummies want their offspring to be playing within eyesight of Waitrose.

Remember that Bristol Momentum did a campaign strike for all but about three Labour council candidates due to how badly South West Regional had treated CLPs there. That explains a lot of the Green surge.
