which way to the MACHINES?

TimWinter posted:

Is anyone familiar with working in SF vs working in New York or Boston? I don't understand how a company can justify paying 2x everywhere else to have offices in the bay, do they actually grind everyone to dust out there, or is the talent pool just through the roof?

Can't contrast really but the NYC dev job market seems to be either 1) big institutions that are already established in the city or 2) startups looking to legitimatize themselves by having Prestigious New York Offices, and glassdoor would make it appear that they just absolutely destroy you if you expect any amount of work/life balance. Pay is high but lol at the cost of living (especially the housing market). Sounds like the bay situation is basically the same as NYC but make it like 1.5x more expensive (but 3x Prestige for startups)

fwiw, writing PHP is fine nowadays. Facebook has pushed it in a direction so that it's basically like writing Java.

If it gets you a job with figgies then that's fine, but yeah, I'd try to find out how much they're trying to modernize and move away from it - are they doing services? Could they migrate some of their backend to something that's not PHP, even if piecemeal? I imagine in 10 years that PHP work is going to be painfully focused on legacy maintenance.

kind of rude for the recruiter to not even pretend that they intend to pay you what you're worth, imo. they usually manage to maintain that polite fiction.

Are you in the Vancouver Goon discord? Love to chat more about market.

I'm also in Vancouver, making $90k as an intermediate dev.

My friends at Lululemon are making $140k TC now, 5 yoe.
My friends at MS were making $130k 3 years ago, 5+ yoe.

I would expect a company at the complexity of Mindgeek to pay similarly to Lululemon, regardless of tech stack.

I don't know what constitutes a good tech salary in Canada, but the fact that the recruiter told them they were only going to be worth marginally more than their current salary instead of offering up a market range is a real bad sign.

Interesting. What industries have you worked in?
My experience is pretty limited by just looking at glassdoor employee reviews for places I'm seeing job postings from, which seem to largely be banking/fintech related or healthcare startups.

it was a very weird interview, like it was only 45 minutes long and we sped through how i like to design software, how i organise teams of devs, what the company expects to do over the next years, what salary expectations would be, and a bunch of questions i had about the role. i have no idea where it goes from here.

i came highly recommended from their newly-hired director, but that can’t be the whole process before i get an offer right :psyduck: or is this how interviews go when you know someone

Yeah it rules. I randomly got into a conversation with a some guy outside one of my professors office. Turns out he was the CTO of a small company in the area, asked my professor for my information, and offered me an internship.

That was pretty much my experience getting my current job, except the interview took maybe an hour and it was entirely off the back of the recruiter recommending me, as he got me another job that fell through while my contact was getting written up. Just one interview with one person, no coding test or anything.

Resume chat from a couple pages back has me worried about the quality of my resume. I moved from the DC area to the Seattle area, and the types of jobs in both areas are significantly different. I don't want to post my resume as it's very easy to identify me from it but are there are some good examples of what my resume should have?
