I've never owned a gun, but I believe the safety rule is never aim a gun at someone unless you are prepared to kill them. I guess a warnin shot is aimed elsewhere, but unless you are hunting targets, I'd imagine actually firing is under similar safety rules.

Yep, first thing my grandpa told me was don't ever point a gun at anything you're not aiming to shoot, if you're not aiming then always keep the barrel down and especially don't paint (Like moving the barrel level at a person in passing) people.
