Paradise Killer reminds me so much of Max Gladstone's Craft Sequence of books and makes me alternate between wishing they'd get like a Netflix series adapatation and praying to the heavens that they don't.

Also it is good and fun detecting in a world that is not quite like our own.

I would also give a shoutout to Paradise Killer as another weird town mystery genre representative worth taking a look at. It's a pretty different style of thing with more of an environmental storytelling focus but also its share of interesting similarities. It's not a classic like DE or P2 but it rattles around in my head occasionally

Paradise Killer is really cool. It looks a little shallow(?) or kinda... cheaply retro at first, but it's actually really well done. It pops into my head all the time

Regarding getting into the harbour, I'm getting a bit worried I've soft locked myself out of it.

I internalized race theory but when discussing it with Measurehead i talked back rather than just tell him I'd given his ideas some thought and would just really like to be let in because, hey, I'm Sorry Commie Cop. It didn't seem to make him want to open the door, although i read in a guide he's supposed to regardless of what you answer? Anyway, in the same conversation i also tried to punch him, which did not end well for me.

I found the alternate route, but failed the rather high skill check for jumping off the roof. I read about stealing an ID card but that feels uncool and I don't know what skill check that would be. Also now it's after 22:00 so i don't think I can level up any more, which seems to be the only way to retry white skill checks. :ohdear:

More things open up on later days. Just go to bed you Botchcop.

Also the ID card doesn't help I'm 90% sure, is just a good pawn item.

EDIT : Also check the door for the sake of everyone's sanity. It's the blue one behind Manana that Measurehead is looking at. Just in case he unlocked it and you didn't notice the change.

The ID card just helps you leave the harbour. If you don't manage to steal it, Evrart gives you one after you first meet him so you don't get stuck.

It doesn't help but there's some good dialogue tied to it where you try to pass it off as your own and nobody falls for it

so i kept failing a check and now i have no more things left to do to gain xp to try again. is there no way out of this?

it's the "get the whole story from titus" step. i've cleared out all the areas and my only tasks remaining are this and buy cuno's pants. i have 8 rhetoric and still failed it three times in a row and now i am stuck :\

For most of the story checks if you fail 3 times there is an option to get past it automatically. Are you doing this on day 2?

Have you bought some dice yet? That resets all your checks.

Also, have you talked to everyone else that has relevant information? Sometimes speaking to them again after each failure can help, try going upstairs.

Is it possible to just never solve the mystery at all? Just wander around doing whatever, and eventually the tribunal will happen on its own?

There's even an achievement for it. I tried it but it didn't pop up, I think you need to not click on the dead guy and then you must say something specific at the very end.

Though at the absolutely minimum you still need to get Titus to tell you about ruby(which also involves a few other checks and tasks) and do the feld building shivers check to get inside and interrogate her

As a heads-up to anyone gunning for that achievement you also have to pick a specific set of dialog options at the end of the game to trigger it. I don't remember the exact sequence but googling should bring it up pretty easily.

drat, what a great game. Finished it this morning before work after a marathon session yesterday.

The best part of the game for me was the showdown between Klaasje and Titus with Harry investigating back and forth between them. In pure gaming terms particularly that is a magnificently well designed segment. I ended up arresting Klaasje as every other option felt like a half measure.

It felt like that the rest of the ending resonated the best way it could with my Harry as he was heavily aligned Communist (only sadness is I never got to play Wirral with the book club and try out my highly experimentalist Welkin-Pygmy hybrid character).

Great game in all, really glad it jived so well with me. I was thinking I'd kick off another playthrough straight away but it feels to me like a game best left to sit for a while and not get too caught up in the mechanics straight away.

Not sure who my favourite skill was, maybe Encyclopedia for making me laugh so much with the hardcore porn factoid in the church.

Edit: Favourite outfit was Fairweather T-500 boots/gloves/shirt, Pinball jacket and Dick Mullens hat to look like some kind of undercover Metal Gear Solid character.

Holy poo poo with Half Light You can whip out your gun to scare Andre and his crew in the tent after you tell them you know about their drug lab plans via H/E Coordination check that needs a passive Half Light check to trigger it.

And of course I got a critical failure and the gun, already equipped in my hand, snagged in my holster and I cursed extremely loudly while Andre was panicking, Noid was about to go for a hammer, and Egg Head didn't give a poo poo.

AFAIK, you're not supposed to interact with it period, not even having a look. You can investigate the crime scene \ look at the footprints nearby, and talk to Cuno.

You can actually feed her an infinite number of hats. Which I'd accept as a feature, if only she wore them.

so Ive managed to still be in the dark with a lot of this game, so two questions so far.

- Im at Day 2 and idk what to do about finding a place to stay. Do I just collect and sell bottles until I get the money or does something somewhere reveal itself at some point.

- I said something along the lines of wait, whats that about [whatever thought], it didnt say opt out or refuse but it seemed to have held off on gaining a thought. Does that mean Ive lost it for good?

To answer your second question, generally when you choose options which start with Wait or Hold on or something like that, you get to learn more without advancing the conversation, so maybe you'll have the opportunity to gain the thought later. Unless it was a very specific one-only, no-questions-asked thought. Or a bug

In a game with lots of "jesus christ this was insanely personal to me" moments, Finger on the Eject Button remains one of the most supreme ones that almost nobody will actually run into in a normal playthrough. It's also pretty much perfectly written for what it is trying to convey

How do you actually trigger it's effects once you gain it? I've last tried before the final cut, but spending whole days and even going to sleep with gun in hand had no effect.

It's my 3rd playthrough of the game in total and I'm still learning new things. I decided to give Klaasje the station call instead of arresting her this time and you can have a rather hard shivers check after and talk with her about the upcoming communist revolution, thats the main reason she has been hiding in Martinaise. I never knew!

If you manage that check it comes up a ton in subsequent dialogues with other people, it rules. It even adds to the ending!
