Holy gently caress lockbox keys got expensive. Admittedly it's been a minute since I looked at them.

Are we in some kind of bubble because of a lack of key sales or something, or is this reflective of general credit inflation with the dialing down of dill rewards?
They actually got over 11m for a brief while a few months ago. This isn't a brief bubble, just about everything has been inflated in the last year or two. Keys are 9-10m, promo boxes are close to 30m, popular lobi ships are 350m, popular lockbox ships are 950m, and promo ships are largely priced off the exchange, which has a 1.5b limit.

There's been a lot of discussion among the players about potential reasons for this. I personally think a lot of things have worked together to do it. I've heard rumors that fewer whales are opening up thousands of lockboxes each time, which would lower the supply of lockbox items for people to buy. And the continued addition of items to the infinity choice packs (which can't be traded/sold without opening them and choosing an item) acts to lower the supply of each individual choice in those packs. But I think the biggest problem is a fundamental mismatch between ec creation and destruction.

A lot of ec gets created in this game. Doing daily endeavors will often give you half a million ec, which the game creates from nothing. Running a patrol and vendoring the drops can give you hundreds of thousands of ec for barely any work. And admiralty will easily give you 150k ec per character per day completely passively. And there's nothing in the game that really destroys ec anywhere near as fast as it's created. Trading on the exchange doesn't destroy ec, it merely moves it from one player to another. Fleet and rep projects do destroy ec, but nowhere near enough. Taxes would help, but would be extremely unpopular with the playerbase.

I don't know what the solution is, but until cryptic changes something, I don't recommend storing most of your wealth as ec.

Destroying in-game currency is a very solved problem in MMOs. The answer is to put in currency sinks. Even something as minor as equipment repair costs that are utterly trivial by the time you're level capped are a steady drain that leaches it out of the system.

Off the top of my head:

- Gear and ship degradation, repairable via EC. It wouldn't need to be extreme, think every 10 times you blow up you need to hit the "repair all" button. gently caress, they could even make it a 1 second duration doff mission so that you never even need to return to port. Doesn't need to be much, just enough to bleed the system a little. Say, roughly 1k ec per time your ship explodes?

- sell some actually worthwhile poo poo for EC, maybe as an alternate. Easiest thing would be a vendor that does direct exchanges of EC for one of the billion other currencies in the game. Maybe reputation marks, maybe the special items that you need for some of the rep item purchases. Crap could be super expensive too.

- sell visual transmogs for equipment for EC. gently caress, do the same for the ships. Allow players to unlock ship skins for EC, but make it a one time thing and make it expensive. Want the cool looking engines from that T6 variant of that ship that you don't own? Cough up 10m EC, and it's single use only.

- doff missions that require a substantial chunk of EC (say, 1m) but are basically a glorified loot box. Say, 50% chance to get nothing, 25% chance to get 2m EC, 10% chance to get a few thousand refined dill, 5% chance to get a chunk of zen, .9% chance to get a T6 token, .1% chance to get a T6 infinity box unlock.

gently caress, that last option alone would probably put a dent in the EC given the player base.

I agree that currency sinks are the solution. That last one you listed might work, but I don't think cryptic will ever go for it. A lot of the others might not help because there's too much passive ec generation in the game. I'm generating around 6m per day completely passively just by doing my daily admiralty grind, and I know I'm not the only player doing that. And I'm only doing it for the dil, the ec is just a nice side benefit.

The dil economy is another problem, and one that they can't really fix without killing the dil farms. And I'm not sure how they do that. An account-wide refine limit might help, but that will probably just see the farmers creating alt accounts to get around it. I guess they could kill all dil rewards in admiralty and contraband turnins, but good luck doing that without players revolting.

Some kind of account cap on dil, allow you to use EC in place of dil for rep stuff/other projects at an exorbitant markup.

Or even better. Buy lobi with EC/Dil.

They used to have excellent dil sinks called 'fleets' that got dil/zen down to like 75, back when supply of dil was probably much higher because of the foundry.

I honestly believe that the colony is part of the current dil problem. The colony dil costs were extreme, and some players made dil farms just to handle it. And now the colony is finished but the dil farms still exist.

This would be interesting, but they'd have to be careful with it. Since you can already buy lobi with ec/dil, by buying keys/promo packs. Set the price too high and everyone will just ignore it.

I dont think enough people bothered doing the colony.

The original fleet implementation had a lot of important stuff gated behind it. If X upgrade ships had been gated behind a big new fleet grind instead of just a $$$shop thing, and they figured out some way to fight NOPPS space communism, they might be able to wrangle dil back to how it was in the good old days. NOPPS played a big role in making fleet progress optional, and fleet progress being optional meant less demand for dil.

Another consideration is that they made it so the casino stuff covered the fleet dil costs, those lockbox gamble prize vouchers can be insta-converted into fleet dil.

At some point their business shifted from "people will pay us money to get dil" to "people will pay us money to gamble and buy stuff in the store." Since the game isn't designed for dil to be in high demand anymore, its 500 dil/zen or whatever and its not a very free to play game anymore.

Xean was mostly a simple sad case (and funny to laugh at). There were others who were far worse. It's been nearly a deacde since we used to regularly fumigate Old Drozana so I can't remember names anymore. Suffice to say a lot of the :aatrek: stuff used to happen in there for reals, including actual grooming. In local chat. Yeah I know that sounds too dumb to be true.

There is a good reason dental was hated by the "community" - it was started by the sex freaks upset their playground / hunting ground was invaded by goons. Initially we did it for laughs, then we realised the actual sickness we came across. I don't have any logs / screenshots from those years saved anymore but others might.

That's 100% Hick's posting style, so he's not actually 'dead'. It mentions he has now been banned - permabanned this time I assume, as he's been banned before on multiple occasions.

Despite his posts he never actually 'helped' anyone, he just spent time screaming into the void in the old STF channels (as they were only 'big' unmoderated channels left). He held conversations with himself using his multiple sockpuppet accounts, always talking in the third persion, and spent most of his time incoherently raging against certain players/communities for unspecified hacking/cheating/elitism/stealing dilithium from him/mindcontrol rays.

He claims to have invented Mudds Store and Random TFOs, which Cryptic stole from him, and makes all sorts of claims about being singlehandedly responsible for saving the game and helping thousands of players, whilst his enemies in the DPS community plot against him.

It is absolutely not an act - and whilst it was fun watching him at the start, the longer you watched the more and more genuinely uncomfortable it became. He is deeply unwell and has extreme paranoia issues. If Cryptic gave even the slightest poo poo about basic safeguarding responsibilities he would have been banned years ago, for his own good.

As for Xean, funnily enough he seems a changed man. Came across as genuinely chill and laughed off all the old stuff.

Other random thoughts since my last post about trying to make progress in the episodes:

This generic science torpedo build seems to be working well for me. I still haven't quite figured out the right playstyle for it yet - I seem to have the most success trying to stay out to about 9.5K, unload an alpha strike with everything, then turn and run until Photonic Officer refreshes all my abilities and I can make another pass. Things don't exactly melt, but it's vastly preferable than closing to under 5K where I can't keep the enemy in my forward arc consistently. I need to run a lot of missions repeatedly and craft a lot of poo poo, but I am interspersing the grind with advancing the overall story arcs so it's remaining fairly palatable.

I admin I enjoy the tiny dopamine hits from the Duty Officer system, but trying to hunt down the next assignment for the chains can be very frustrating. So there are some assignments which are location-specific, but not shown in the Current Map tab but rather under a particular division head? And the STO wiki is out-of-day on where these assignments can be found since the map was rewritten sometime after Iconian War? I'm slowly getting the hang of it, but it's certainly not user friendly.

The Admiralty system is just Duty Officers but for people that own a crapload of ships, as far as I can tell. There's no real way to get ship cards other than buying ships, correct?

I really don't think I would be bothering if there were any good spaceship RPGs on the market, but here we are. Somehow this remains better than Eve Online in terms of having non-terrible PvE content, but holy poo poo the amount of grinding I foresee to get anything in the "endgame" is absurd. It's fun, but not fun enough to devote actual dollars to compared to almost anything else I could be spending my money on.

Also, do the mission Time and Tide and get the admiralty reward. It unlocks the USS Pastak card.
