Looks a tad better now its actually been cleaned. And its friggen HUGE.

Its "Broken"

Obviously broken....

As far as I can tell, all it really needed was a MASSIVE clean out, a firmware update and some very minor repairs- I found one cast plastic axle for a gear train in the service station was snapped off, but it was formed with a hole in it that perfectly fitted a rivet shank, so its now a steel reinforced axle!

about ten years ago, my neighbor got a brand new GSXR and two weeks after he got it, a van pulled out in front of him and he almost bled out laying on the road. He's all hosed up now with rods and poo poo all in him. First and last time he owned a bike, what a brutal way to get introduced to riding.

After too many idiots and close calls on the street I rode at the track or on dirt. It isn't the same but it kept me riding a few years longer than I would have otherwise. Finally sold the trials bike last fall and will be selling the race bike soon. I miss it but the street is just too dangerous around here.

I always thought it was just me getting older and weary being most of the reason I stopped riding, but then I see old rear end dudes in shorts and flip flops with no helmets flogging their Harleys through traffic and I guess maybe I just like life and relative health more than other people.

People get stupid around other vehicles, from a moto to a million ton trains. Best thing you can do is predict their bullshit and remove yourself from the situation.

Problem with crashes like this is that someone has to ride long enough in order to predict shitweasels like traffic device runners. There's a fat loving set of curves of lovely motorists and inexperience with dealing with them that results in this. Rack miles, always be building skill and doing drills. I had a bike accident 11 years ago in town; I was leaving work and a 17 year old girl blew a stop sign into me. I was wearing full gear including helmet, gloves, shin/knee guards, boots, armored jacket etc. and al that poo poo saved me from a worse head injury (had a mild concussion) and any road rash whatsoever. I still ended up with a bad acetabular fracture, broken nose, a bunch of broken ribs and some bruising.

Didn’t walk for months after my surgery, and still have a lot of hip pain. I need to have a total hip sooner rather than later but overall I avoided having my hip die on my from lack of blood supply so there’s my bright side.

It took a few years for me to get back on the bike but I eventually did and now I basically just avoid towns as much as possible. I used to ride like 300 days a year but now I’m down to maybe 60?

Rhyno, I hope your friend pulls through and regains as much function as possible. It’s a tough thing to deal with but hopefully his family and you and his other friends can help him stay in a good place mentally to deal with it.

I haven't ridden since getting clipped by a car on a busy freeway in LA ... almost 11 years ago, yeah. I was very, very fortunate in that I did not get seriously injured, although I have a couple scars where my gear moved and I lost some skin, as well as a very much less useful shoulder.

I'm back.

Wound up being a pretty nice place (I've never seen a detox place with a TV in the bedrooms!). Turns out it's $1k/day if you pay cash, insurance got it down to $140/day. I start IOP Friday, which is going to be $1200 out of pocket for me (which would be something like $6000 cash). They wanted me to do at least 30 days of residential, but that would have been $8k+ out of pocket. :stonk: So IOP it is, and a lot of it is going to be virtual. Work has me on medical leave with short term disability for a month; I'm hoping to get back to work next week though. (a) STD only pays 2/3 of my normal pay and (b) I'm going to be bored as gently caress sitting at home all day. Though I fully intend to drag the bike out and hit some trails ASAP, soon as I'm off the gabapentin (makes me kinda dizzy, should only be on it a few more days).

You have no idea how strong the cravings are. I was hoping they'd put me on naltrexone, or hell, even antabuse.

I have a GF that would kick my rear end to the curb in a hurry though, and part of the agreement with work is they can drug test me or breathalyze me at any time for the next year. Gonna try to focus on biking and getting in shape.

Also need to talk to my dr. My oral diabetes meds weren't doing the trick, even on a nearly zero carb diet (though I was snacking a lot - body is looking for all the calories I'm missing from all the beer - my appetite is only now starting to chill out a bit). I wound up getting insulin before most meals. At least they let me use my own glucose meter - the "official" one is the same $12 piece of poo poo that landed me in the ER close to DKA.

in 11 years of having my endorsement and somewhere between 200-300k-mi ridden I've been hit twice. Once was on fire roads, tboned by a dirtbike. Another was rearended by another bike.

Expanding that to encompass 17 years of having a license and who-knows-how-many miles, I've had two crashes. one being a bait and hook insurance scam in rural rear end Georgia, the other wrote off the green range rover in Pasadena circa 2013.

I'm not gonna hang up driving if I get hospitalized from some fucko running into my 31 year old truck, nor will I quit if the same happens on the bike. In all likelyhood the truck will get pranged before the bike, its slower, heavier, less maneuverable, and has fewer outs in heavy traffic.

Now, drivers have gotten abysmal since the pandemic. I'm not as keen with driving much less riding in suburbia. People are generally fairly attentive yet aggressive in the city. Get into the burbs, the vehicles are larger, driven more aggressively, at the same time people are updating their OnlyFans page while buttchugging monster or someshit.

I recommend front and rear cameras, insure the gently caress out of your stuff unless you're fine writing it off. Definitely do under/uninsured/medical.

If you ever have questions about the beetus, you know my PMs are open. I have a bit of first hand experience ... Dang, I could've bought a house by now - in LA, even - if I had just pulled my pancreas up by it's bootstraps.

(and can't post for 11 years!)

So I've had ONE voicemail from insurance, I called them back and let them know I would be unavailable for a week due to personal issues, but to please let me know the best time to reach them. Crickets. Called them today, got voicemail again. Let them know I'm available all day tomorrow, and have the car back home, so I can email pictures if needed (this company normally does everything online).

Depending what they offer, I may try to fix Brokeback myself and just drive it into the ground again. It's not in nearly as bad of shape as Saturd was. I need to get the fender off and see if the frame horn is bent. Everything under the hood seems to line up fine, and the driver's side headlight points up a little now (the headlight is broken off of the upper mount though, and part of it is just gone). I know from a quick glance that it needs:

Left headlight (broken mount, side of the light is broken - still functional though)
Left foglight (might be able to fix it, it's just bent to poo poo)
Front left fender
Left mirror (got clipped; still functional, but it lost some plastic - it was already kinda beat up when I got the car, so no biggie there)
Radiator (stupid $50 radiator.... should have gotten a better one)
Bumper cover
Crash bar behind bumper? (it's caved in on the driver's side, but I don't think it's been pushed in any)

I THINK the radiator support is okay - the hood still lines up fine on the passenger side, gap is even all the way down. Nothing lines up with the driver's side fender and hood, but the fender is caved in, and you can see marks where it moved under the screws.

Just depends what insurance will give me, what the buyback is, and if I can find another BH Outback. I might consider a BP Outback. Brokeback still drives fine, doesn't pull or anything (surprising since the wheel got hit too), it's an $1800 shitbox that has lived way longer than I expected.

Seems like that's something that would belong more in YLLS, or :barf: TCC. But it does seem like a lot of us are in recovery, so maybe we could get one going? If the mods approve.

I did pick up an old habit there though - I just bought my first pack of cigarettes in awhile, but hopefully also my last pack (holy poo poo when did they get so loving expensive?! Camels were $3 a pack when I quit, Camel Crush is a bit over $7!).

They yanked me off of my Klonopin cold turkey. Supposedly Librium helps with a very rapid benzo taper, and it really does seem to have helped - I haven't felt jittery or anxious until tonight (yesterday was my last dose of Librium, I believe it was 2 x 25mg). They actually called my GF and told her to throw my klonopin away entirely. Uh, I've been prescribed that a long time. I feel like I can probably take it every other day at this point, but I'm prone to long-lasting panic attacks - which is why I'm on a long-acting benzo. (funny enough it didn't show up on the drug test when I arrived... one of the nurses told me later "oh, that's the one that doesn't show up on our test")

I got super stressed about the paperwork I have to fill out for HR, ComPsych (the company that mostly handles the self-admit "I have a problem bad enough that it's interfering with work, I need help"), FMLA, and the remaining paperwork for my IOP (which is affiliated with the detox center, they have an excellent reputation for both IOP and residential). Luckily corporate HR filed the bulk of FMLA and short term disability for me and got it approved, I had an email when I got home saying I'm approved for disability for a month, but I need to get the IOP to sign off on it too. The IOP program is 8 weeks (thought it was 4 originally).

Found an AA group that has 8am meetings, both online and in-person (they're close enough that I can walk from home [1.2 miles from my front door], or bike from work until my insurance gets me a drat rental, still waiting on that). My IOP, for now, is 3 days a week, online, 9a-12p, so the online AA would line up perfectly (if this group works for me). If I wake up early enough, I'm going to try and hit their 8am online meeting. We did a few AA meetings via zoom at the detox place (muted w/camera off bc HIPAA).

Prescribed 300mg 3x/day until I run out (have 27 pills). I kinda figured with how it makes me feel that it would have some withdrawal - it kinda feels like a strong benzo, but with even less balance. I wasn't sure if it had withdrawal or not, I've been too foggy most of the day to look it up.

I'm gonna go ahead and start tapering off of it tomorrow. I don't know how easy it'll be to taper with this elephant dose, might have to open the caps and dump some out?
