The American left died in the 1950s and the New Left was just pretty much cosplay. Hippies were middle class children that just didn’t want to be conscripted but wouldn’t have cared if the conflict had stayed a “professional” affair. There was not broad social movement in subsequent American conflicts. Hippies counted as the “left” in the 1990s only because they were the closest thing to it (not very close). I mean there were some true believers in there but they were pretty much isolated individuals. I guess CPUSA is still around but technically it should be banned. i think leftist sentiment really is increasing rapidly among the younger american generations. imo the biggest barrier to that coalescing into something is the internet itself. the internet is perfect for dumb arguments and banal utopian consciousness raising but it's just deeply opposed to any kind of actual organizing. You're physically separate from the people you're talking to, and you're talking in public on a surveilled platform. you can't do real poo poo for your community together because you're not physically with each other. And you can't post anything really threatening to capital because then you get banned. So all you can do is shitpost. And because of how online works, the worst shitposters get the most attention. Leftist online mass media sucks because of infectious online ad economy. Anybody who gets a solid podcast or YouTube channel going immediately gets handed a hundred dollar check and told "you get more if you get more views." By the time anybody gets a serious following, they have a material interest in keeping the views coming and not posting anything really threatening to capital. (Hence the chapoids' "aw shucks we're just entertainers." Meanwhile the Soviet Union attempted to stamp out alcohol consumption for it's entire existence. I can't think of a single socialist movement of any note that didn't crack down on drug use, both illicit and legal.
