Read an interview with the one guy who aborted his tours. This is a luxury tour offering, you pay €100K for the cheap version or €200K for the full monty.

Some tidbits:

Of the 408 expedition groups, three brought covid tests. Allegedly "almost everyone" cordoned off their expedition from the others and he's not sure how covid could possibly have spread, but then it turns out there were parties.

He says he was "hoping the government would stop expeditions" then "that others would stop expeditions first" (read: he didn't want to have to refund people) but nobody did.

Also the only way out of Basecamp at the point of the interview (5 days ago) was via chopper, as the Khumbu valley was shut down with military stationed to turn away people.

If the sherpas weren't involved one might be tempted to cheer for the Masque of the Red Death situation they manufactured for themselves.

e: almost forgot, there's inclement weather coming that makes the original window of ascent very unlikely.

Almost six-months and two deaths into 2021- the NPS is sick of dealing with climbers on Denali in Alaska.

The statement also reminded climbers that the National Park Service rescues people only when their lives, limbs or eyesight are at risk.

“Anything that we deem falls outside these categories, we will leave you to figure out on your own, and this year we have already turned down rescue requests that don’t meet these criteria,” they said.

I try to imagine what it would be like going to base camp for Everest, and I think I'd just flat out die. Anybody else have major altitude issues before?

I was born and grew up between 4000 and 7000 feet, but I've been living basically at sea level for the past 10 years. At some point, my altitude resistance dropped, and whoo boy does it suck. A couple summers ago, I did a half day of work, spent an hour at the gym, and then drove to the foothills of Mt. Adams for a weekend of glamping. I had some food, a couple of beers, and then went to hike up the hill to the outhouse, and I was just gassed the whole time. It seemed weird, because going to the gym felt good, and the drive wasn't that tiring, and I'd only had a couple of beers?

...oh, right. It was also 7000 or so feet above sea level.

The after effects of the COVID vaccine felt really similar.

The following records have been set on Everest:

Fastest woman from Basecamp to summit @ 25h50m;
First family of 8 Sherpa siblings to summit;
And Kami Rita Sherpa, previous record holder, summited for the 25th time.

The newest expedition to the site thinks that they set up their tents in a dangerous spot to shelter from the wind. An ice slab detached and ran over some of the tents, severely injuring several party members. The other members, fearing a full-scale avalanche, fled and were unable to find their way back in the dark.

I moved from East Coast to Colorado for a few years, and while I get headaches/migraines somewhat often, the first one to two months there I had terrible headaches and migraines every day, then I was fine. Now when ever I go back to visit I’m fine, and typically I summit a 14er whenever I go and it’s fine too.
