This is not related to Everest, but is related to the attitudes of some of the Westerners who climb Everest. Cross posting from the Schadenfreude thread.

Read an interview with the one guy who aborted his tours. This is a luxury tour offering, you pay €100K for the cheap version or €200K for the full monty. Some tidbits: Of the 408 expedition groups, three brought covid tests. Allegedly "almost everyone" cordoned off their expedition from the others and he's not sure how covid could possibly have spread, but then it turns out there were parties. He says he was "hoping the government would stop expeditions" then "that others would stop expeditions first" (read: he didn't want to have to refund people) but nobody did. Also the only way out of Basecamp at the point of the interview (5 days ago) was via chopper, as the Khumbu valley was shut down with military stationed to turn away people. If the sherpas weren't involved one might be tempted to cheer for the Masque of the Red Death situation they manufactured for themselves. e: almost forgot, there's inclement weather coming that makes the original window of ascent very unlikely. gschmidl fucked around with this message at 20:55 on May 25, 2021 |

I was at the beach last weekend. I went into the water just up to my knees and almost got knocked over by the rip. The power of the seas is no joke.

Do not gently caress with flowing water in general. A foot of flowing water can easily knock your own your rear end and carry you along with it.

The super soldier guy off of the UK TV show SAS: Who Dares Wins gets humbled by Everest. -ninja edit- Actually after watching the last couple of minutes, "humble" is probably the wrong word lol It's pretty short, I guess due to only having 1 cameraman, but it's still pretty interesting Worth the hassle of VPN or whatever for non UK Goons imo https://www.channel4.com/programmes/extreme-everest-with-ant-middleton/on-demand/68004-001

Almost six-months and two deaths into 2021- the NPS is sick of dealing with climbers on Denali in Alaska. The statement also reminded climbers that the National Park Service rescues people only when their lives, limbs or eyesight are at risk. “Anything that we deem falls outside these categories, we will leave you to figure out on your own, and this year we have already turned down rescue requests that don’t meet these criteria,” they said. https://apnews.com/article/ak-state-wire-lifestyle-health-coronavirus-pandemic-environment-and-nature-3480cb4ec763cda66582bc44a78b3209

quote:“We have seen a disturbing amount of overconfidence paired with inexperience in the Alaska Range,” the National Park Service wrote in a statement issued Thursday. quote:Experts recommend taking 17 to 21 days to climb Denali. That includes rest days and extra days to wait out extreme weather. Many expeditions get “desperation, impatience and summit fever” when they are running out of days and take risks, rangers said.

I grew up and live in Ohio. I remember going to Estes Park, Colorado for my honeymoon just a few years ago, and I thought I was going to die because of the altitude. Also, I have horrible asthma, and have had it my entire life. I try to imagine what it would be like going to base camp for Everest, and I think I'd just flat out die. Anybody else have major altitude issues before?

At some point, my altitude resistance dropped, and whoo boy does it suck. A couple summers ago, I did a half day of work, spent an hour at the gym, and then drove to the foothills of Mt. Adams for a weekend of glamping. I had some food, a couple of beers, and then went to hike up the hill to the outhouse, and I was just gassed the whole time. It seemed weird, because going to the gym felt good, and the drive wasn't that tiring, and I'd only had a couple of beers? ...oh, right. It was also 7000 or so feet above sea level. The after effects of the COVID vaccine felt really similar.

https://twitter.com/NewYorker/status/1400591896603512832 The newest expedition to the site thinks that they set up their tents in a dangerous spot to shelter from the wind. An ice slab detached and ran over some of the tents, severely injuring several party members. The other members, fearing a full-scale avalanche, fled and were unable to find their way back in the dark.

Someone was lighting their farts, and one of the fireballs got too big and one of the people jumped backwards and accidentally hit the "avalanche" button.
