The people who make the comments are much more likely to be socially isolated and angry. They will have less interpersonal connections in a community. https://bmjopen.bmj.com/content/9/11/e030355 Loneliness can create loneliness loops where anti social behavior multiplies https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3874845/. I think the thing is that online spaces, without much moderation can be dominated by otherwise socially isolated angry people. Another part of polarization of society is people self selecting away from people with opposite political opinions. It is pretty easy to not be friends with many racist people but you have like 20 friends and live in a city of thousands to millions. Not to say that people can be nice in public and racist online, but people are not dealing with representative samples of the population.

Alctel posted:Ok I give up. Everyone I know is actually secretly intensely racist and online comments are an excellent way to get a representation of how everyone actually thinks Unless the place you live in is made up only of yourself and your own intimate contacts, then a non-insignificant portion of the people who live there statistically hold racist or otherwise regressive views. That's why the comments section in your local news outlets looks like it does, and pretending it's just backwards boomers is denial to the reality that there's a lot of Gen Xers, Millennials and Zoomers who have lovely views in every community of any decent size and demographic diversity. I very much doubt "Everyone you know is secretly intensely racist" and nobody said that, just that putting your head in the sand to certain realities is naïve.

MA-Horus posted:At a time when parks are being used more than ever before, I bring you the National Post! Clown-rear end motherfucker. I know it's NatPo and not knowing things is how you get an editorial spot in the first place, but he could at least pretend to have some concept of urban issues before slaming his face into the keyboard for another column. Bonus points for using an image showing a park being used by dozens of people in the article where he says parks aren't used except by people walking their dogs. The column is actually much worse than the blurb suggests. Mostly his problem is that there are now encampments in the parks (you know, because the shelter system which was already woefully underfunded essentially collapsed during COVID), and he thinks that if we privatized them that wouldn't happen anymore. He also thinks he can just pay for park amenities directly, because somehow the city doing that with tax revenue is bad, because of an anecdote about people who don't have jobs at McDonalds. I wish I were making this up. infernal machines fucked around with this message at 20:02 on Jun 2, 2021 |

We opened the camps, we opened them even though TRUDEAU closed them down, closed them down but he left the borders open, didn't he? He left the borders wide open, for all those diseased immigrants, I gotta tell you, I love the immigrants, they do great things, but we've got to stop them from coming in, no other points of access to this country aside from Pearson International but he just refuses to shut it down, to shut it all down."

Also just the creep factor of Doug following a small child into his house unannounced instead of asking the kid to get his parents to come to the door. Also wouldn't Doug making a house call be considered non essential and therefore illegal under his own rules?

MA-Horus posted:At a time when parks are being used more than ever before, I bring you the National Post! Goddamn now that's some nuclear grade bad opinion clickbait. Here's a recent tweet thread bout the actual problem with our parks, which is that they're surrounded by increasingly ultra expensive low density housing, and these public amenities are now woefully underutilized spaces reserved for super wealthy neighbours. The thread takes us on a little tour of a bunch of very nice west side parks, ringed by multi million dollar homes and inaccessible to renters. https://twitter.com/DannyOleksiuk/status/1397238054453137408?s=20 If we have a land utilization problem, it's not that open gardened park spaces exist, it's that these spaces are surrounded by low density estates for the rich. Every one of these west side Vancouver parks should be ringed with small apartment buildings and townhouses at a minimum.

Denis Coderre has always been a gigantic piece of poo poo, and I was worried his carefully calculated comeback for the fall municipal election would put Valérie Plante in danger. He has put on a big show of losing a hundred or so pounds and going on a personal journey of reflection since his loss of the mayoralty in the last elections - which was largely attributed to his arrogant personality. His redemption narrative (buttressed by the release of a ghostwritten memoir) is such greasy, transparently crafted PR, but it seems like after the past year of isolation people around here will settle for any sort of return to the past that makes their most aggrieved, reactionary feelings resonate - here against Plante and her bike lanes, I guess. Let it be known that I don't particularly love Valérie Plante, whose shortcomings are substantial : there are some serious governance issues as her party has always been a top-down technocrat affair, and her continuing support of police budget increases is sociopathic. But Coderre is a loving nightmare and much scarier. And the amount of misogyny brought to bear on Plante by the media is honestly unreal. My fear is that this misogyny will set the stage for a return to the old days of topsy-turvy ratfuckery - one need only look up Gérald Tremblay or Michael Applebaum to see what I mean. I won't be satisfied by a mere re-election of Plante/loss of Coderre, but for the last while all I've been able to imagine are catastrophic Coderre-win scenarios. And then Coderre got photographed while texting at the wheel over the weekend, then became weirdly defensive, which a wide swath of journalists rightly recognized as classic 2015 garbage behaviour on his part. And I'm increasingly feeling pleased because I can see these types of errors in his judgement multiplying. Patrick Lagacé notably detailed this long relationship with untruthfulness in La Presse the other day, but today news of this really strange, petty and flashy heel turn dropped: quote:Coderre, who now lives on de la Commune St. in Old Montreal, said the violence that broke out in the Old Port Saturday night convinced him alcohol should not be allowed in parks at night. https://montrealgazette.com/news/local-news/no-booze-in-parks-after-8-p-m-if-coderre-is-elected Jam Band Death Cult fucked around with this message at 03:35 on Jun 3, 2021 |

More information on the Portapique massacre. Sourced from Franks Magazine a tabloid/news magazine from Nova Scotia so I'm not quite sure I would place it well vetted since these are supposed 911 audio tapes secretly copied and provided to Frank Magazine. It has the raw audio and a written transcript, of 3 different 911 calls. The TL;DR is that these 911 callers reported that it was their neighbour Gabe dressed up as police with a police car shooting them. So more fuel to the fire of RCMP incompetence showing that the initial 911 calls told the Police who was shooting, what he was dressed as, and that he was driving a police car. Information that was not released to the public as supposedly they only got the info from GW's girlfriend in the morning and the police uniform and car info wasn't reported to them, when these 911 calls show it literally was reported to them that night. Still I would approach this with a critical eye as Franks magazine is tabloid-lite from my understanding.
