How do I search for restricted terms? I want to find some 12v stuff with a cigarette lighter jack but Ali won’t let me search for it even though items will clearly have it in the title

I don’t know, really. Sometimes I’ll find related items that use the code word and then I’m off to the races. Car power outlet might work for you?

What's the search term that's getting filtered? I can search for "cigarette" just fine, and actually get mock cigarettes etc.

But, for the terms Ali considers no-no, the only recourse I'm aware of is using euphemisms.

yeah if I search anything that includes cigarette I get zero results. I even get search suggestions with cigarette in it when typing it out but don't get any actual results. I'm in the US. It's really bizarre.

So this is a bit weird...

I bought a USB Optical drive a month or so ago (this was ebay but via china so I will provide links to both sources that I can find). It works reading discs and I used it barely - ripped some DVDs to discs etc.

So on the weekend I'm loving around with some PS1 game burning and getting very frustrated at one of my consoles as it wasn't reading anything I burnt. Tested audio CDs to isolate out modchip incompatibilities. I was going in loops and bought new CDs that were recommended, adjusted the laser and a lot of swearing.

Nope this drive PRETENDS to burn discs! I had a stack of discs I thought were failed burns that in fact were BLANK but reported in ImgBurn to complete fine. After reloading the discs they come up as empty and were burnable on another computer!

Here is an incredibly boring 7 minute video outlining it. Hoped to do it all in one take to limit claims of shenanigans from the seller/eBay:
https://streamable.com/otoccy

This is the one I bought:

Looks to be this on Ali

Got me hosed as to WHY, my partner bought from the same seller and hers works fine for burning CDs for her car.

I did try burning through Media Player and a few other burning programs (Alcohol 120% etc.) and same result for me.

I wonder how it actually works. chip that sends like the same fake "all's going well" data to software? randomized? might make for a wacky investigation.

Yeah some sort of fake burning buffer. Having a chat to an actual IT pro who works for the military and is keen to get his hands on it.

It is really bizarre as it will 'burn' according to the min/max speeds of the CDs inserted. All functions work, the only reason in the video I turned of verify is due to it failing to of course...having a fake disc in there and wigging out. Wanted it to clearly show a blank on reinsertion.

Jan 17, 2010

Unless it tries to then read the disk you can have it do everything correctly but lack the physical parts to actually do the burning and the computer wouldn't be any wiser.

Does it work at the lowest burn speed?

Works (as in fake burns at the advertised speed) at 4x on one type of Verbatims and 2x on another sort. Inline with the specs on the packaging. This motherfucker made me actually buy CD-Rs. I have had this stack of 100 for maybe 10 years for a reason...

shame on an IGA
Apr 8, 2005

Defect in the power supply to write laser or the write laser diode itself + buffering the entire contents of the disk and presenting the buffer to the host pc as the drive instead of the physical disc, I'd bet.

When you read a real cd does it just spin up once and then no more when you browse the file directory? I'd bet it's just dumping the entire disc into buffer when you insert a disc and likewise the other way when you write. 800MB of ram or flash doesn't exactly bust the bank these days

If the laser was absent/undergunning it, I would expect the chip to notice that the power draw was all wrong. But it might not do any of that for cost reasons.

Ali is combining a lot of my packages nowadays. I bought four or five things and all but one are coming in one package. I see the appeal, but I kind of liked waiting for all of my stupid purchases to appear in my mailbox one by one. Five packages is more fun than two, dammit!

I have no idea what my enormous plush penis is stuffed with but it was clearly not designed with cuddling in mind, it's not soft at all. I bought a bread pillow and it was just stuffed with pretty standard polyfill.
