At one point I realised first friend and I could set up a literally impenetrable wall of mutual supports between us and the remaining three players. We then spent a glorious week copy pasting the same orders over and over while pretending to agree to P2W friend's increasingly frustrated attempts to prisoner's dilemma us.

I tried a couple more after that but it never captured the schadenfreude of the original.

Diplomacy is cool but the default Europe map is unbalanced in a way that means that experienced players are aware of which positions are stronger or weaker than others.

For this reason I like games that use variant maps/nations to shake things up, especially if you have a mix of experienced and new players. Interestingly, 'Chromatic Diplomacy' (aka 'everyone is Italy') is not great for this purpose as while it's 'balanced' there's also not much in the way of differing relationships and it's also much harder to make an impactful move.

The nations are unbalanced yes, but not overly so. As long as everyone in the game is of a similar experience level it doesn't matter too much. At high level play, the meta (I hate using that term, but in this case it is justified) ensures a pretty well balanced game. Italy is objectively in the worst position on a purely tactical level, but both the 2016 and 2017 world championships were won by the Italian player in the final.

Diplomacy is a great example of a game that I think is really cool to listen to and think about but that I hate playing in practice. Just trips a bunch of my neuroses.

I'm curious as to what alternative maps are considered good mostly because maps are cool.

Depends on the expectations and level of commitment required for a game. Most people aren't down for a 4-8 hour game that they lost in hour 1 because they didn't know the game well enough, but where that loss condition isn't triggered until late in the day. Winning under similar conditions also isn't very fulfilling for me.

Edit: On the opposite side of things, a 4 hour game of snakes and ladders would be just as unfufilling to win or lose.

Does anyone have a link to that story - I think it might have been an imgur album? - about how infamously hard it is to get fantasy artists to draw the thing you've commissioned from them, and how they instead keep wanting to draw whatever titillates them? The one where it contrasts something to the effect of, the commission description of a female ranger in functional wilderness attire, and the actual art being basically softcore porn?

Leperflesh

I've played some Diplomacy. It's nominally a board game but it benefits from the current best practices for running a safe RPG table: that is, a pre-game warmup session in which everyone gets very firmly on the same page with regards to what is in or out of bounds; because as it is usually but not always played, it's about baldfaced lying to your fellow gamers, and that is a thing that may be embarrassing, offensive, and even friendship-ruining when it wasn't expected, or even sometimes when it was.

"I had no idea you could lie to me so effectively" is a potentially fraught thing for a person to discover about another person they initially felt a lot of trust towards.

But with a baseline of understanding well-established, it can be a very entertaining three to... twelve+ hours of gameplay :negative:

I heard this story about Exalted artists. Some of the artists they hired would give them what they wanted, more or less, with, yes, some of their personal tastes intruding, but like that dude who really wanted to draw panda people drew so many they were just like "Ok fine, the panda people are canon, this is easier than arguing with him."

Yeeeeep, it's widespread apparently. The post / article I'm thinking of had several examples from RPG books and, IIRC, Magic cards, where very reasonable, easy-to-follow instructions all turned into something the artist was clearly drawing with one hand.

The archmage of unexpected stinks.

Was she also the one that really liked bald ladies with lip piercings? During 2nd edition it seemed like someone wanted to draw their personal character as each type of Exalt. Like there's a Lunar one that's going all chimera, there's an autochthonian one with a gear for a mohawk, etc.

Some people I've talked about this with before have noted it's actually easier to avoid this problem if you go with an artist who does in fact do lewd art in a more public manner, like how it's probably something along the lines that since they already do that stuff out in the open they are better able to separate out those impulses than artists who hide away any outer perversion in their art so it just leaks out anyways in a manner they can't really control, not a universal thing mind you but one that makes a certain amount of sense

God, the loving nipple piercings. I once pulled out my copy of 1E Games of Divinity just to illustrate to my largely Exalted-ignorant partner that, yes, every humanoid demon in the Malfeas section has nipple piercings and it's incredibly off-putting -- maybe less so if it's just the artist's kink rather than an actual art-design decision, but still, ugh.

One of my personal hangups because my brain is a gently caress is that piercings make me imagine stabbing pain in the corresponding area on my own body. The more sensitive the area is, the worse it affects me. Now that's a me problem and people are free to express themselves as they want etc. etc. but it makes reading Exalted books an... interesting experience.

I won the only time I played Diplomacy because after nine hours of back-and-forth with one person just lying all the time and everyone else lying some of the time, I started targeting the more frustrated people with "hey if you do this I can move in over here and we can wrap this poo poo up".
