I still don't know what "Sword of Swallowed Darkness" as the title of a "joke" porn supplement is supposed to mean. Dick docking? Also, the thing that always sticks in my mind about the Savant & Sorcerer cover is the loving eyehooks on the lingerie, like she bought it at Home Depot Intimates

Crossposting from the D&D thread in the hopes that someone actually remembers the article / discussion I'm thinking of: Has anyone here adapted traditional children's games (tag, hide and seek, Red Rover, etc.) as the basis of D&D minigames, or seen them adapted elsewhere? I know I've seen a discussion of this somewhere years ago, where a minigame turned out to be an elaborate adaptation of, like, What's The Time Mister Wolf or Freeze Tag, but damned if I can find it. For context, my players are off to confront a horrible ghost-thing that used to be a child and is now one endgame antagonists of the campaign. Rather than have a dungeon and a boss fight, they're instead going to try to reawaken the ghost's humanity, and part of their plan involves playing high-stakes children's games with a creature that can rewrite the natural world: the Floor is Lava, but the floor is actually lava, Ghost in the Graveyard but with an actual ghost, etc. This is The Best Plan and I want to encourage it, so I'm pondering what could be converted into minigames.

Well, famously there's the game that uses Jenga to resolve conflicts, maybe you could do something like that? For example, it seems like jacks or marbles would also work well with something like that. Jacks in particular would be similar to Jenga, in that the first round would be easy but increase in difficulty with every further round.

But these would be children from the fantasy setting, right? They'd be playing quasi-medieval high fantasy children's games, like i dunno, Pin the Tail on the Manticore, or Mumbletypeg but with fairies somehow, or Who Has the Biggest Rat. Also the universal kids game played by all kids everywhere in every universe, Let's Huck Rocks At Stuff.

The one where it contrasts something to the effect of, the commission description of a female ranger in functional wilderness attire, and the actual art being basically softcore porn? This is bothering me because I remember the post... I think it was on a blog? One example was from some 4e art of a druid, I think. Then there was another example involving asking for a non-white barbarian woman and the end result of that request.

Though tbf folks were talking about 2nd e. I don't know if 3rd is anywhere near as bad. Pathfinder is still a thing and Amiri the signature barbarian was still wearing "armor everywhere but her torso" at least as of the 2018 videogame. In terms of general cultural zeitgeist Red Sonja is still a thing and to my knowledge still running around in just a bikini. It's not anywhere as bad as it used to be where everything was pure horny, but it's also silly to pretend there isn't a ton of weird sex stuff in nerd poo poo these days. The ads for printable minis I get on fb also makes it look like the trend is still big too.

It's a truly bizarre question because cheesecake is normalized to the point that it isn't even seen as Weird Sex Stuff. In any given illustration it's just normal for women to be wearing inexplicably little clothing even if it isn't a fantasy fetish outfit.

I don't know if 3rd is anywhere near as bad. 2E mostly followed along with this, if with somewhat more explicit 'anime/manga style' takes on things, including short comics. There was more color, including as I recall some oddities like colorful renders of various pieces of setting-appropriate equipment -- which is probably at least a little defensible, just because Exalted drew from a lot of sources. 3E seems to be in this modern trend of "Let's get something in gorgeous full color, and what matters is that it's full color, not that the composition or flow are worth much. It just needs to kinda look like a painting." This includes stuff like the famous image in which Chejop Kejak, ancient mystic conspirator and kung-fu man, was looking at a range of floating screen-like objects, one of which had -- was it Age of Empires 3? Some video game's login screen. If I had my own druthers, purely from aesthetic, I would have stuck with 1E's take. I'm not sure why they abandoned B&W art... does it come off as cheap, do the people who pay through the nose for Kickstarters want specifically that?

Unfortunately with videogames that allow that level of skill ceiling very quickly you end up with ONLY the players who are that good still playing, leading to a death spiral where all the less sweaty original players have fled to more casual-friendly games, and anyone new who tries to come in is immediately ripped to shreds by teams full of triple-plat xxxgokuweedlords. See: trying to play Titanfall 2 anytime but a free weekend after three months post-launch. Like it or not but your average player isn't going to just keep coming back if they feel like they're just like NPCs in a Dynasty Warriors game.

Tuxedo Catfish posted:people who are extremely demotivated by losing to the point where they'd rather quit than improve should just go ahead and play something else. It depends. Like a game where competitive rankings are a feature or focus of the game should probably have some kind of tier system so that new players have a chance to learn and become invested in the game before they get steamrolled by experienced players. Completely depleting your pool of potential players would be a net loss for everyone. Games where there's PVP but it's not designed to be a competitive environment don't need to put those kind of barriers in place. Like, someone getting invaded by a human red phantom in Dark Souls, then getting 2-shot because they don't know how to handle interacting with another human intellect is part of the game. But it's not a demotivator because it's effectively a random encounter that just happened to be above their current skill level. With board games, I don't think you can really avoid experienced players doing better. All you can hope for is an experienced player holding back or helping new players when they ask while they learn the rules. It would be interesting to see more board games offer "handicap" mechanics for experienced players though, if only to see what sort of mechanics would come out of that as a feature.

i agree about Dark Souls but it's also a really weird (if fascinating) example, because the purpose of invasions in Dark Souls isn't really competition at all so much as enlisting other human players to act as obstacles or "heels" in the same manner as NPC enemies in a singleplayer game. it's incredibly clever and also, i think, often incredibly misunderstood by both parties, and definitely not the target of my criticism here in any case

Not to state the obvious, but in videogames there's always more faceless randos to stomp, but in board games you've got to convince a real human to sit across the table from you. If you become a sweatlord at some trad game and use that skill to make things unfun for new people, you'll develop a reputation and run out of local people to play with a lot faster than you do in videogames. We've all run into that guy irl, but it seems to be mostly self-correcting in board games.

My point is that it works mostly in a game where having mastered that learned skill isn't a basic barrier to entry. An RTS, MOBA, FPS, or whatever game where it's a central feature needs ways of retaining players long enough for them to grow and help sustain a population that is enjoyable to play against. Even if it's amusing that in a situation where theoretically, if all other things are equal, a highly skilled player could pulp 4 newbies.

I'm going to be designing a one off dread-esque campaign where player reaction is Paramount. Basically things happen in relative real time and players must make quick decisions. As a boring example: "a killer is running towards you with a knife": someone within the group MUST act within 10 seconds or someone dies. For the longer times I have a collection of sand timers ranging from 1 to 15 minutes which are fairly accurate. I have a couple sand timers under a minute but they are inaccurate and fluctuate and are only as low as 30 seconds. For the very short time windows, (5 seconds or 10 seconds) does anyone have any suggestions for timing this? I could obviously use my phone or Alexa, but I want some tactile and in their face. Sand timers are great for this but they don't exist at such small increments. Any suggestions would be very appreciated.
