Part of the thing with secret operations is you only find out about the declassified stuff, the stuff they want you to find so you know they’re there (a Stasi favorite) and the fuckups.

Uh, I believe that if you read something other than State Department propaganda you'd find that China is actually a Communist utopia where every one is equal, there is no poverty, human rights are respected, and it has DEFINITELY NEVER started a genocide or imperialistic war.

To be honest it's very easy to do this and come away still thinking everythings just fine in China. For everyone, not just foreigners, you can get into a bubble here where everything looks great if you never leave it (and are making decent money.) Especially when the media is reinforcing that 'everything is just great even in those so called poor places you should never travel to' message.

Yeah. There is a substantial part of the country that looks and feels like the government aspires for it to look and feel. Not in a deceptive way - it actually does work.

Just, there are so many other parts of the country that are significantly larger in terms of land area and somewhat larger in terms of population, where things are lovely. And while there is some progress towards making those parts less lovely, it is very slow and will probably stop if/when a significant downturn happens.

And then, the treatment of the various rebellious provinces.
And, y'know, the cultural genocide thing.

Something something land of contrasts?
Ultimately, China would be Just Another Country, with good aspects and bad aspects and the usual endless arguments about each, if it weren't for the stuff happening in the South and the West.
Lots of places have underdeveloped areas and shocking inequalities. But genocides, cultural or otherwise, have been going out of style lately.

Two of my fellow citizens have been detained for several years without charge, until recently when they were subject to closed-door show trials, because Canada respected its treaty obligations and arrested Huawei's CFO for sanctions busting with Iran. A third Canadian was hauled out of prison to have his drug trafficking sentence upgraded to death, which is something I have yet to find a whataboutist equivalence for in the Western judicial system. Said CFO is living comfortably on bail in one of her two Vancouver mansions and posing for photo ops on the courthouse steps before her latest round of legal puck-ragging gets denied.

You can see why I'd advise Do Not Travel unless you want to stake your freedom on the PRC government thinking a fourth hostage would be unlucky.

Before I got that example that kinda blew my argument up, the people being referred to were a solidly convicted drug runner, a former diplomat, and an international consultant st the level of being personal friends with heads of state. As in, not 'most people'.
