Mention of Stalin actually got me genuinely curious about a topic. Basically, how is Russia and the Soviet Union viewed in China today? Also how are they portrayed in like history education and pop culture when and if it comes up. A very broad question, and one I imagine where the answer ahs changed alot over the years, though I imagine the fact that the two of them had a mini cold war goign in Asia from the 60s until the Soviet Union fell apart must count for something in that relationship.

A very broad question, and one I imagine where the answer ahs changed alot over the years, though I imagine the fact that the two of them had a mini cold war goign in Asia from the 60s until the Soviet Union fell apart must count for something in that relationship. From superficial, uninformed appearances, the governments are uncomfortable for all of the obvious, previous-conflict, land-border reasons, but right now they're more or less sticking together due to shared external pressure. Old people here have generally positive opinions of Russia - a lot of old technical dudes (this being China, there are a *lot* of old technical dudes) either learned Russian and got trained there, or got that info second-hand from the people who did. Obviously this opinion may well change with proximity to the border. Middle-aged people typically think of Russia in terms of trade if their jobs involve that, or strippers if not. Young people mostly don't care, aside from buying in to those Russia/Putin Stronk Like Bear memes, and occasional minor Russian celebrities in China. The most common way for Russia to come up in mainstream/popular Chinese media is as the equivalent of an approving nod for loving with America. Re: worker quarantine, that stuff did cause a ripple, but people were mostly preoccupied with Other Stuff, and if memory serves then China did some minor tit-for-tat travel restrictions. It didn't last long in the media, anyway. Atopian fucked around with this message at 02:34 on Jun 23, 2021 |

Russia and China's geopolitical interests generally don't actually converge a whole lot aside from both of them wanting to gently caress with the West and especially the USA, a shared interest that has been strong enough since 2014 to paper over other points of friction between the two (specifically, Russian insecurity about the power imbalance in the Russian far east and Russia's belief that central Asia is its rightful sphere of influence, along with China's clearly more antagonistic stance towards its neighbours, someting that Russia has noticed even if that antagonism is not currently directed at Russia) There's been some buzz in international relations circles recently from Biden's decision to meet with Putin personally, due to the possibility that it may be aimed at bringing Russia in from the cold somewhat in order to further isolate China (a possibility that Putin is likely eager to leverage in the hopes of easing Western pressure on Russian interests in Ukraine and Belarus) Fojar38 fucked around with this message at 02:44 on Jun 23, 2021 |

I've been to a couple different universities that hang up pictures of Stalin in some of the classrooms, along with Mao, Marx, Aristotle and some other famous historic Chinese people. I'm not sure who makes them, but they're all the same regardless of the university so I think there's one specific company they're ordering them from. Never saw a picture of Aristotle on his own, always the type that come with a quote, but the others were all just like "here's Stalin looking down on you in math class just hanging out" Edit: This painting I think, or at least one very similar BrainDance fucked around with this message at 02:49 on Jun 23, 2021 |

I personally like it but it seems to be a love it or hate it thing. I actually had a really nice whisky based drink with ginger and sichuan peppercorns and some other crap a couple weeks ago. I also tried sichuan peppercorn flavored gelato recently which fukkin sucked lmao. It just tasted bad and not really like sichuan peppercorns at all idk what the gently caress was going on. I like when you go to Hunan every house has a few portraits of Mao hanging around. Reminds me of when I was growing up and going to older extremely catholic relatives' houses that had a jesus/mary/cross/etc in every room.
