my belief is that the concepts of objectivity and subjectivity are not mutually exclusive and the manner in which this particular topic always seems to go is rooted in a fundamental misunderstanding of how those concepts relate to qualitative analysis in media ergo who cares

Jamie Faith posted:Hot take but the PS2 podracing game is so much better. It feels way closer to the movies with how you have to spend more time managing your podracers systems and with the 1 life and you're out of the race rule, it's way more exciting! In the n64 version, all the racers are all spread out, in the ps2 version, everyone is way closer to each other so there's more close combat and trying to take out other racers. It owns so hard. It's my favorite racing game of all time. I played a fuckton of Racer Revenge as a kid, I enjoyed it and the pc port of the first racer game a lot and enjoyed the no respawning feature in revenge too, it especially made the multiplayer fun, my brother HATED being taken out of the race but it was too fun to crash into him. I haven't played it in forever though, does it hold up? I remember when the PS2 price got lowered to $199 we got ours at the local Toys-R-Us, they were sold out everywhere else, and Racer Revenge was one of the games we bought with it there, so it might have been the first PS2 game I ever played? Almost exactly 19 years ago now, heck. I see a lot of people talk about the original Racer game but never the ps2 Racer Revenge! I'd love to see a new podracing game come out.

Absolutely get it if you can!

Okay, so let's tackle the idea of objectivity and subjectivity as they relate to media criticism. Now, before we start I'm going to have to be "that guy" who pulls out a dictionary definition of the terms. I'm not doing this to be pedantic, I'm doing it because the word "objective" has several different meanings and I want to make sure we're all on the same page in regards to the terms I'm using because English is a crazypants language held together with chewing gum and paperclips. So I think the best definition for what I mean when I talk about objectivity is this one from Dictionary.com: quote:intent upon or dealing with things external to the mind rather than with thoughts or feelings, as a person or a book. Now, it's been brought up before in this thread, on both sides of the argument, that what we are looking at when we assess whether a movie is "good" or "bad" is how well it fulfills its intended purpose. This is a pretty simple and universal metric by which to assess something's quality: A hammer is a good hammer if it can effectively drive nails into a surface, a wrench is a good wrench if it can fasten a bolt. The problem we run into with this is that a movie' (Or really any piece of art) intended purpose is to impart an emotional response in the viewer, to impart a thought or a feeling; things that are by their very nature subjective. While we can make objective assessments and value judgements about aspects of a film (such as how well it did at the box office, how well it was received by critics or audiences, etc) we cannot make an objective, holistic assessment of a movie's quality in the same way we could a hammer or a wrench. Now, does this mean all opinions about movies are equally valid, or quality is meaningless or any other such outlandish scenarios? No, not at all. We just can't approach the question of "is this movie good?" the same way we would something that can be objectively determined. Whether a movie is good or bad is not a question with a single right answer, but one with many possible conclusions backed up by reasoned arguments. All of these conclusions are subjective, but the arguments used to support them are not created equal. In short: In media criticism, whether you say the movie is bad or good is not important, it's the argument you present as to WHY you believe this. And I think this is why the idea of saying a movie is "objectively" bad or good rankles so many people in this thread: It is a statement most frequently used by people as a means to validate their own subjective media opinions without doing the intellectual legwork to develop a reasoned argument to support their conclusion, they are instead more concerned with validating their own, existing beliefs by appealing to a hypothetical, outside standard rather than engaging in a nuanced discussion. Now, does this mean we should throw out all questions of objectivity in media criticism? ...Not exactly. While assessing the overall quality of a movie is an ultimately subjective exercise, I think that there's still some merit to applying a more objective mindset in how we approach analyzing them, but not in the same way we would objectively analyze a hammer. Rather, we attempt to apply some measure of objectivity to media criticism by attempting to explore and incorporate points of view outside of our own, to look at a film from different angles and through other people's eyes. Even though I don't particularly like the Star Wars Prequels, my assessment can become more complete and impartial by considering that there are people who legitimately enjoy these movies, and by trying to understand WHY they feel this way. In conclusion, objectivity is a land of contrasts...

I feel y'all deserve a reward for all the hard-fought discussion about criticism in this thread Ironmouse and Pikamee did a collab playing super bunnyman. Ironmouse is quickly becoming my favorite non-hololive vtuber, she's ridiculously inspirational and probably one of the better vtuber singers, and she's drat hilarious. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70dx3mfgdpg&hd=1 She also did a collab with Calli from holoEN, it was a fun chill stream mostly with them fangirling and being adorable https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZHp1YMMDNE&hd=1 And Ina has started The Wonderful 101, which promises to be good fun. The great/depressing thing about W101 is that nobody loving knows what it is 99% of the time so it's basically a guaranteed new experience and good time for basically anyone you show it to!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lccQAqFq7c&hd=1
