I'm glad that I never really got into Harry Potter as a kid. Not because I'm trying to be the One True Nerd or anything, but I have a couple of trans friends that were really into the series when they were growing up, and needing to reconcile those happy memories with J.K. Rowling being a gigantic terf piece of poo poo obviously weighs on them a lot.

I like to think of the "can I like Harry Potter despite JKR being terrible" question can be answered with an analogy. Eduard Pernkopf, was an Austrian anatomist who wrote a book on human anatomy in the 1930s that is still used widely today. It has been a source of great guidance to many surgeons who have used its knowledge to help them save God knows how many lives. However, Pernkopf was an ardent Nazi and the illustrations in his book were made using the corpses of political prisoners murdered by the Nazi government. Doctors who have learned from his book can either throw it away and never use it again which perhaps will have a negative effect on their efforts to cure people, or they can acknowledge the moral failings of the author and continue to take from the book what they will. The correct course here, of course, is to no longer indulge in Harry Potter books because you're a goddamn adult now and not a kid.
