as the world turns
I'm basically just saying that these scenarios are equally likely:

- Congress fucks over regular people getting unemployment
- Congress is reallocating previously-agreed to UI money that red states are declining (because gently caress regular people)
- Congress hunts for the actual waste/fraud/abuse (and fucks over regular people through state action)
- Congress popped some bullshit numbers in that don't mean anything, in the classic waste/fraud/abuse hunt that never happens

We'll know more once the bill is written about which of these (or a combination) is actually true. We don't know enough yet because Congress loves to do all of the above four things and random times.

So here’s some grim poo poo about climate change

quote:

Climate change will fundamentally reshape life on Earth in the coming decades, even if humans can tame planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions, according to a landmark draft report from the UN's climate science advisors obtained by AFP.

Species extinction, more widespread disease, unliveable heat, ecosystem collapse, cities menaced by rising seas -- these and other devastating climate impacts are accelerating and bound to become painfully obvious before a child born today turns 30.

Mid-century projections -- even under an optimistic scenario of two degrees Celsius of warming -- make this an understatement.

Tens of millions more people are likely to face chronic hunger by 2050, and 130 million more could experience extreme poverty within a decade if inequality is allowed to deepen.

In 2050, coastal cities on the "frontline" of the climate crisis will see hundreds of millions of people at risk from floods and increasingly frequent storm surges made more deadly by rising seas.

Some 350 million more people living in urban areas will be exposed to water scarcity from severe droughts at 1.5 degrees Celsius of warming -- 410 million at two degrees Celsius.

That extra half-a-degree will also mean 420 million more people exposed to extreme and potentially lethal heatwaves.

Unsurprisingly enough, it’s the Global South that will bear the brunt of most of this despite them contributing not very much to the problem.

A lot of natural gas production is linked to oil production. While you may have some natural gas only wells, you're often getting both crude and gas from the same well.

If you don't have a source for that gas (like a power station and associated infrastructure) it's often flared as most states allow that. Either way, that gas got to the surface, so you can vent it, flare it, or capture it and send it to power plants, fertilizer plants, residential, etc. It sounds like some states are doing re-injection to avoid flaring but if the choice is direct it a power station to close a coal plant, that's a win. Otherwise, you'll be burning the gas for nothing and still using coal for power production. If natural gas is closing other types of powerplants - eh...

"Stand back, Ottawan ruffian, or face my lumens!"
The US has a shitload of natural gas deposits. We produce more farts than any other nation. Therefore, the natural gas lobby has its hands up the asses of politicians on both sides of the aisle working them like puppets because JERBS and this bullshit notion that CNG is the FUEL OF THE FUTURE and they need to be on the ground floor or they're going to have to explain to their constituents why THEY didn't ~get with the program~.

It doesn't matter that CNG extraction is acutely poisoning people. It also doesn't matter that it might be worse for the planet than burning oil because the extraction process is imperfect and the methane wastes go directly into the atmosphere and don't pass Go in the process of doing so. The politicians who've bought into the natural gas lobby are pot committed. They hear poo poo like "the United States is the Saudi Arabia of Natural Gas" and get all horny because they want board memberships and cushy post-public office jobs.

Fusion isn't even a way out anymore because it's almost a 99.9% certainty it'll be cracked by a hyper-corporate entity who will :smug: the gently caress out about it and then fleece us all for recouping of their invested money 10000x over while airing "you're welcome" ads on worldwide television.

Ask me about Proposition 305

Do you like muskets?
So I made this post last month about legislative language to get rid of the remarriage penalty for surviving spouses:

McNally posted:

Wow, I think I might have been proven wrong.

https://www.militarytimes.com/pay-b...-fallen-troops/

Instead of a stand-alone bill, they want to add it to the NDAA which means it has a way better chance of passing. That drat bill is a Christmas tree.

quote:

Last year, as part of the annual defense authorization bill, lawmakers dropped the age that individuals can remarry without incurring penalties from 57 to 55. Walz and bill co-sponsor Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass. and a Marine Corps Veteran, are hoping to include the new legislation in the upcoming defense policy bill for fiscal 2022.

This I didn't know about, but I left the Gold Star spouse Facebook group I got my news from because they didn't like dissenting voices and viewed disagreement as horribly rude argument. It really does underscore how arbitrary the age cutoff is.

quote:

But the issue hasn’t gotten much traction in recent years because of the potential cost of the fix.

I can certainly see how this can be an issue. The amount must be pretty considerable.

quote:

Congressional staff estimate the new bill will cost about $180 million over the next decade.

Oh gently caress you

I decided to look into it to see if there was any movement. There hasn't been, really. The House NDAA isn't expected to be released from committee until July because the priority is on Infrastructure Week, but I was able to finally find a number for the stand-alone bill they released on this.

I hate to do all this again, but if you guys wouldn't mind harassing your Congressfuckers about HR 2827 it would be greatly appreciated. It currently has 13 cosponsors:

Rep. Waltz, Michael [R-FL-6]*
Rep. Moulton, Seth [D-MA-6]**
Rep. Crow, Jason [D-CO-6]**
Rep. Bacon, Don [R-NE-2]
Rep. Taylor, Van [R-TX-3]
Rep. Lamb, Conor [D-PA-17]
Rep. Panetta, Jimmy [D-CA-20]
Rep. Hartzler, Vicky [R-MO-4]
Rep. Pfluger, August [R-TX-11]
Rep. Franklin, C. Scott [R-FL-15]
Rep. Kahele, Kaiali'i [D-HI-2]
Rep. Carbajal, Salud O. [D-CA-24]
Rep. Miller-Meeks, Mariannette [R-IA-2]
Rep. Houlahan, Chrissy [D-PA-6]

Please tell them to support both the bill and the language in the NDAA. Thanks.

It's not that clear cut on Milley. He still showed up to Lafayette Park when it was *very* obvious what Trump was doing and tear gas was in the air. Also not a given that the trigger-pullers would pull said triggers either - the military's way more ideologically diverse than VFW halls would make you think.

But meanwhile, I don't think they'll be successful here, but it's loving good to see:

The Voting Rights Act of 1965 and its pre-clearance requirements were quite effective in that regard. Unfortunately, the Supreme Court killed pre-clearance in 2013 in Shelby County v. Holder in a 5-4 decision because the court conservatives decided racism is over.

I'm no history expert (because I'm white and went to a suburban public school), but I'm almost positive all the Reconstruction laws were completely watered down and/or shot to pieces. That's among one of the main reasons why Andrew Johnson has a potential claim to Worst President Ever.
