I was just about to post those. It worked on me, in that it got me to peruse their product out of dozens of others.

Not a revelation, but the dropshipping racket is stepping up. I bought a shirt last month from a non-descript online retailer. No clear location on their website, generic aspirational name ("Porta Rossi"), lots of mood-setting photos of people on yachts, relaxing with a cocktail while looking over the Mediterranean, etc. I googled the item description before buying and looked on Ali for it, but no match. Nonetheless, 3 weeks later it arrives from China and sure enough my AE recommendations start including the same item, at 1/3 of the price. The shirt even had an accurate size label in Western sizing.

And then there's this: http://joom.com which looks like an AE clone, even using the same photos and style sheet. Is Ali running knock versions of itself?

EDIT: after a bit of googling, Joom is a Russian or Latvian outfit that is selling Chinese products. So, a middleman, and one with shocking reviews.

Welp, jig's up for Ali in the UK. They're automatically collecting VAT on stuff now. Takes quite a bit of the shine off their prices when they go up 20% at checkout.

Yeah I was sad enough about the NY state 8.875% they started charging, you know they’re just keeping it.

On the whole, I prefer the VAT paying thing to getting right above the limit, or sometimes having to contest a bonus +15$-ish charge if the postal service here decided to process it / were suspicious about the value of the contents.
(Norway started with the electronic vat system + vat on everything in like 2019 I think it was? A bit ahead of the UK + EU)

It's nice knowing that no matter what tat you buy, at whatever price range, what comes up in the checkout is what you pay in total.
For me it also made everything >20usd-ish cheaper, since there's no longer the +15usdish customs processing fee, which is nice when you buy more expensive stuff like the paperang miniprinter thing I bought a while ago.

They started doing that for Australian GST back in 2018, which is 10%. At first I cut back my frivolous purchases of useless crap on principle but eventually I just got used to it and the price is still usually cheaper than anything local, even if the quality is questionable.

Does anyone have an explanation for Aliexpress sellers sending rechargable batteries in flashlights? I ordered this set of 4 USB rechargable batteries, and they came inside two flashlights. This is not the first time this has happened, so I'm wondering about the reason - is there some restriction on sending batteries that does not apply to "flashlight, batteries included"?

I'm pretty sure loose L-Ion batteries need special packaging, which may cost more than the flashlight. In Compliance mag (a real page turner I'm sure) says they're two different shipping categories:

quote:

Transporting lithium batteries are organized by packaging instructions (PI) numbers. The most common designations include:

PI 965—Loose Li-ion cells and packs (UN 3480)
PI 966 and 967—Li-ion with/in equipment
(UN 3481)

Ikea was my first choice, too, but they do not have USB rechargable batteries and I always end up losing the chargers if they're separate. That's why a built-in USB and charging circuit is great.

There are different reporting/labelling requirements and shipping restrictions on loose batteries and non-loose:

Lithium metal (nonrechargeable) cells and batteries and lithium-ion (rechargeable) cells and batteries are mailable in limited quantities domestically via air or surface transportation when they are installed in or packed with the equipment they are intended to operate. Unless otherwise excepted, lithium metal and lithium-ion batteries (without equipment) are mailable in limited quantities domestically via surface transportation only.

https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52apxc_032.htm

Which leads to the somewhat paradoxical outcome that if you buy li-ion batteries[1], they have to be labelled with one category and come surface; if you buy batteries inside flashlights, they can have a much less obnoxious warning label and can be airmailed. This, of course, has nothing to do with how well the total package protects the batteries from damage, shorting during transit and setting the plane on fire.

[1] And yes, this covers cells as well.

If you're ok with buying batteries from AE you have no reason to be upset with the inclusion of free flashlights. Yes, even if it's a radiation flashlight somehow.

Bought one of these stupid fake gameboys and enjoying it, it’s not perfect but for the price it’s a fun bit of nostalgia gaming. Also let my niece and nephews play with it at a family thing and it was constantly in use, fun novelty for them with their tablets and phones. It included AV out cable but haven’t used that.

The buttons aren’t great - button A doesn’t work so well on mine but most games only use two buttons so X is mapped to the same as Y, same with B and Z. I didn’t get the one with the controller so no comments on that maybe having better buttons.

Has a 1020 mAh BL-5C battery that gives it a bit of life and can be played while charging on a micro-USB cable. It’s a little smaller and a lot lighter than any gameboy I ever had.

Seems to be mostly or all NES ROMs, so assume it’s the cheapest possible computer that will run an NES emulator. Realising there are a multitude of ways to do nintendo emulation this is probably really only useful for the lazy who like to play nintendo in the toilet or if you want something cheap to keep kids occupied for an evening.

A couple of the games seem to be bad copies but most games I’ve tried play fine with only a few lockup’s requiring a reset and it has a reset button that takes you back to the main menu for when that happens. In particular Super Mario drops you into the first level like normal except the level is upside down and you drop the down forever, making it unplayable.

These only do NES because they're not emulators, they're just NES "system on a chip" hardware, the same things that were in all those "PLUG N PLAY TV GAME CONSOLE 50-in-1" things a decade ago. Same reason they don't have savestates.

However for the same dirt cheap $20~ price you can get something called a Family Pocket FC3000 which will do every console through Genesis and a few Capcom arcade games too. You can even add your own games. And yes, it has savestates.

I have one of those emulation fake gameboy and IMO its much better than playing old games on your phone. I also have set up a Playstation controller and a phone holder on top, which I only played once and never went back. It's much easier to play old games with physical buttons. Tring to connect poo poo through bt is too much trouble. Also I don't like playing old games on a giant 7" screen.

Just make sure you buy the higher end ones they are great. I played tetrics non stop for my trans pacific flight.

I brought it 2 years ago I don't even remember what the name was. But I can grab it anytime I want and bang out the space shuttle in Tetric.

That's a Retrogame RG300. It will emulate everything pre-playstation but doesn't run SNES perfectly and at $50~ isn't as dirt cheap as the Family Pocket FC3000. However it looks like an original gameboy, so if that's your thing, go for it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mmZM4May9s

If you prefer a fake GBA SP, there's also the Powkiddy v90 for $10 less, and for just $15 more you can get a PocketGo S30 which is much more powerful and looks like a SNES controller, as you can see here:
