Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing Transformed is the best kart racer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZUaRcR_0CM Submitted as evidence: the Skies of Arcadia track played by a sentient Dreamcast VMU that transforms between the Daytona car, the After Burner plane and a Dreamcast controller (as a boat). Remember when Sega had that brilliant transforming idea for that game and then released a sequel that replaced it with an utterly poo poo team gimmick that everyone hated? That's Sega in a nutshell.

Then when you get into the game itself you are frozen and have to stand in an elevator listening to two random mooks planning the first mission. A game that's supposed to be a mix of Bulletstorm and not poo poo Borderlands has no right to pull something like that. I was going to buy this but barely missed the sale (steam was still showing the sale price but when I got to actually paying it didn't have it). It's not so much about the money as it is about feeling like a rube for paying MSRP, so I didn't.

I wish video games had at least a smidge of respect for the players time. Why is that character you want me to follow moving so slow? Wait if I get a ahead did he loving stop? Yes yes I know crouching is a thing. Oh it makes me stealthier? No way. That tall grass can hide me? Whoa whoa whoa you're going to fast slow down! You want me to pick up rocks? Did you not see me doing that the second I saw something to grab? Yes yes got it throw a rock to distract the thing. Hold on your just now mentioning sprint? I've been using sprint already. I do love how every game seems to assume I've never played a video game before. I'm like 50 minutes into Horizon Zero Dawn and just now done with the tutorial (maybe I imagine they'll be more).

I used to eagerly attempt to 100% games because I only had a few at a time (SNES/Genesis) as a kid. Trophies/achievements were kinda sorta the same thing so that was cool for a bit. Now for me to even consider ‘100 percenting a game’ is beyond the pale and has no bearing on my enjoyment. I’m surprised when people talk about it - especially those that only recently got into games. To each their own - numbers go up is something I understand - I guess I finally grew out of it. Shout out and Lol at games that had more than 100% completion (looking at you Donkey Kong Country series).

Street Racer was a good Mario Kart ripoff. A fun fact about it is that it was made mostly by a couple from Turkey. At some point they go divorced and after the guy found a new wife the two of them made the original Mount & Blade. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zturPhgEaVo

hawowanlawow posted:we play path of exile, our outlook on game accessibility is probably warped I like the joke but that has nothing to do with game accessibility, though, the absolutely most casual games are either stuff for party play or smartphone puzzles. If you want to take a look at a game that "everyone" plays you're more likely than not looking at either fast-paced or session games or companies that somehow actually managed to grab everyone like Nintendo. When guitar hero was a thing a lot of non-gamers played it. Before that you had an entire generation who stuck to DDR and Pump it Up. Single-player games padding content super hard are doing it almost exclusively for the play time, there are weird worms in millennial brains that automatically link everything lovely to "it's done for the casuals" or equivalent mythical newbies that never played a game. That isn't it, it's quite often the opposite, a lot of stuff especially in AAA games are assuming that you know the video game language and UX already. UX for new players is stuff like level design guiding with lights where you're supposed to go or Portal auto-detecting whether or not to invert mouse when it tells you to look at the ceiling lamp. Escort quests taking forever are there just to be a pain in the rear end. Like, I play so few campaign or AAA games that sometimes I pick one up and have no idea what it expects me to do because I've lost the track of their design language years ago, that doesn't make the padding any more useful. Duck and Cover posted:The older I get the less patience I have for blatant padding but even as I child I knew MMORPGS were bullshit (still would play some for awhile before I'd realized oh I'm just leveling to get a mount or whatever gently caress that). I'll be honest, I still prefer (not that I'd play them) the 90's MMOs motif of grinding is the actual game than colossal wastes of time like every wow expansion or patch requiring you to undergo hours of tedious fetch quests punctuated with just the worst story ever until you can get to what the game really is: A hub-based session game where you queue for raids/dungeons/pvp. I must have seen 1 or 2 individuals at most who told me that yes they love grinding 10 levels skipping quest text every time an expansion is out it really adds to it.

You think Overwatch needs such long setup times? Padding is everywhere. Grinding can be relaxing and chill so I get the appeal. The thing I don't like is the whole gating cool poo poo behind levels to get you to grind when you might not want to. If you can manipulate me without me realizing it, fine whatever, it's when I see it I my enjoyment lessens. I just want games to feel like the people making them are trying to make a fun experience and not laser focused on the time played metric.

Yeah you're right, I was mostly focusing on the fact that tactics previously used in multiplayer games are now in single player games as well, like holy poo poo playing a campaign story-focused game and then quests pop up like I'm leveling in an MMO is so awful.

More accessibility is good, hand holding me through a tedious tutorial yet again, not so good. It would be nice if a game actually paid attention to what a player was doing and for example skipped the sprint tooltip if it's detected that the player has already used sprint. 7 days to die has a tutorial quest chain every time you start a new character and the very first time I played I kinda ignored it for a bit and crafted some items I thought would be useful. Then later I found out you get skill points for completing it so I started doing them and it required me to remake those items I made because it hadn't taken note that I already made them.

Yeah what you learn in tutorials isn't always shocking, but if it's a good game it will have enough unique mechanics or systems such that there is value in the tutorial.

Oh silly me thinking there might be some gameplay after the tutorial of Horizon New Dawn instead of just cutscenes after cutscenes with some walking to get to more cutscenes/dialog. I'm not so much surprised as I am disappointed I know this is what modern AAA games are. I'm pretty sure it's been like 90% cutscenes/moving to the next cutscene and maybe 10% combat (I think that's probably generous). Do people like that? Am I the weird one? It's fine I've played 2.6 hours mission accomplished money secured. Duck and Cover fucked around with this message at 06:36 on Jun 30, 2021 |

I lost interest in Horizon once I reached the desert. Turns out making detailed forests environments must be hard since from there on it was just a bunch of featureless dunes. Not that I would have noticed if there was anything interesting in the desert since I was constantly being bombarded by giant loving robot birds every step.

But last I heard Dark Souls was pretty popular, and that's like the poster child for inscrutable mechanics, and it's tutorial is literally some scribbles on the ground you can run past. Dark Souls actually proves my point, in that every DS game's opening area is a tutorial that teaches you partly how to engage with it's mechanics. The DS1 Undead Asylum is a small map with a central bonfire (so if you die while learning, you won't lose a lot of progress and allows you to level up quickly), a tight corridor with your first shield and sword and a undead bowman at the end of it. There's a trap next to the bonfire to teach you to be aware of your surroundings, and you can also do a plunge attack at the boss as both a helping hand in beating the boss and to show you the effectiveness of plunge attacks. You can play a little with the leveling mechanic by killing enemies and walking back to the close-by bonfire. You can skip the scribbles on the floor, but even if you do the game will teach you how to play it regardless. The area itself is the tutorial. It won't teach you everything, but just enough to get you started.
