Bulletproof is a selling point to fools who've never been in such a car before (and/or people who actually need it, but they're not buying Teslas)

Having ridden in a bullet & bomb proof care befor, it is quite possibly the least-safe feeling you'll ever have in your life. Like, you are acutely aware of what it is and the danger it's trying to shield you from. I've been told that the discomfort is normal. Medellin normalized a lot of weird poo poo to me when I lived there as a kid in the 90's.

The OSHA is the mall security guards checking under cars with mirror. Like, what if you actually found something spicy? You are not being paid nearly enough for that, holy poo poo.

Everything Musk does is to insulate him from the poors.

Build tunnels for cars under the city so you don’t have to mix with the poors in traffic or on the train.

Build cars with bulletproof windows and “biohazard mode” in case the poors get restless.

Ultimately, gently caress off the Mars where no one shy of ten figgies can follow.

I mean, he's literally said that Earth laws don't count on Mars and in general his vision of Mars looks dystopian as hell. Musk doesn't really hide his intentions. He doesn't think the Earth can be saved from climate change so the only choice is for the rich to relocate to Mars, with some of the poors also imported to serve as slave labor.

Now with less breakage.

The one reason I can see for "bulletproof" glass on the truck is that it's probably more resilient against randomly stabbing it with a ladder or dropping a branch on it than normal car windows.

Of course, only a minority of them will actually be used for anything resembling work, but "plain metal exterior that shouldn't mind scratches" and "especially solid glass" sounds like it could be useful for all 20 people who use them for that.

The hilarity in thinking its easier to relocate to a planet that's 99.99% unlivable and make it livable, rather than put that money/effort into fixing a planet that's 0.01% unlivable is beyond hubris, and rest assured Musk and everyone that follows him will almost certainly precede whatever calamity may befall those on earth.

It is really difficult to over-state just how insanely difficult it would be to make Mars livable. PBS Spacetime did a really good breakdown of all of the difficulties.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FshtPsOTCP4

Aside from the fact that it would be significantly easier (both in terms of effort and resources) to fix literally every ecological problem on Earth, it would be easier to make large-scale settlements floating in the upper atmosphere of Venus.

a reputed car designer's analysis is that it's because they designed it according to what they fantasize the future to be (a madmax like dystopia) instead of designing it according to the future they want (even though assuming they actually have a positive vision for the future is probably giving them too much credit)

Goodbye Mars One, The Fake Mission To Mars That Fooled The World

quote:

Four years ago, you couldn’t go a day without hearing about Mars One. Outlets including The Washington Post, the BBC, CNN, Fox News, and many more were swept up by the project’s promise of colonizing Mars, despite scientists ruthlessly – and regularly – pointing out its flaws. Now the false promise is over.

According to a notice from the Civil Court of the City of Basel in Switzerland picked up by the Swiss newspaper Landbote and on Reddit, Mars One Ventures – a British company bought by a Swiss firm in 2016 and one of two entities behind the project – has been declared bankrupt as of January 15, 2019, with less than $25,000 in its accounts. The company has now been dissolved.
