Now, at the age of almost 49, I find myself rather enjoying a bunch of recent/new/currently active bands that seem to have been labeled "deathcore". Like Lorna Shore for example, that poo poo is sick.

First thing that comes to mind is, at my age, am I not supposed to stop liking new music and just stick to whatever I was listening to 25 years ago? Am I broken somehow? (My wife does from time to time accuse me of not acting my age...)

There are lots of great metalcore bands, particularly before the wave of Killswitch Engage type bands. But the only deathcore band I’ve ever really liked is Glass Casket. Also a lot of the young death metal acts now really love hardcore and incorporate it into their music but don’t get the deathcore label.

A few months ago I remembered about All Shall Perish and put their first album on repeat for a little while. It's a fun album with some cool riffs

As Blood Runs Black's Allegiance is just Slaughter of the Soul with breakdowns, and that makes it one of the best dxc albums ever imo. I also got into dxc (relatively) late in life, sad I blew it off in highschool I probably would have had more fun going to shows back then.

As hybrid core-ish bands go, Neck of the Woods is pretty cool. They managed to lean further into both the prog-metal and metalcore aspects as they go, but their first album is a good place to start. Though I think most people consider The Passenger to be their best.

For metalcore, if you haven't yet give (earlier) Integrity and Ringworm a listen. It's a pretty different sound from the style of metalcore that got pretty big in the early 2000s and they're both pretty crushing bands.

They begin again

Don’t sleep on Every Time I Die for scratching a certain metalcore itch. They’re a lot more melodic and uh, “fun” I guess. Not quite as metal rooted as other mentioned bands but they’re phenomenally good. Seriously check out the video for Map Change sometime. It’s a great song and the video is the cherry on top. One of those tracks that really gets it’s hooks in me every now and then and I listen to it over and over.

I’m looking for some recommendations for new to me stuff to check out. The sweet spot for me is like 80s Metallica and most High on Fire stuff. I like staying heavy and can go slow to grunge like Alice In Chains, stoner rock stuff like The Sword or doomy stuff like Pallbearer. I do listen to Amon Amarth sometimes, that’s maybe an upper end on death metal type stuff. I generally don’t like super polished production, growled vocals, or power metal. Thanks for any recommendations, I’m looking to add some variety to my playlists.
