That was at the Alameda Sheriff's bomb range, IIRC. The quarry where they vaporized the cement truck was sufficiently isolated and deep to avoid damage, I think.

I'm confused how they found thousands of pounds of explosives and then proceeded to try to detonate it 20lbs at a time in their little chamber. Were they just going to sit there in the street detonating explosives for weeks on end on their tactical 18 wheeler? What was the overall plan here. Also, I'm very ignorant about this kinda thing but isn't there more to determining the potential yield of an explosive than simply relying on the weight? Like what its composed of, how much the material has degraded, and like literally everything that isn't just how much it weighs. KABC has interviews with the LAPD where they keep insisting the container is rated for 50 lbs of explosives but that seems like a really reductive way to think about potential energy.

Per the article I posted upthread, the stuff they were worried about and wanted to detonate there were the several IEDs that the guy had built, not the thousands of pounds of conventional fireworks. Yes, but they're chemical explosives and all within an order of magnitude of each other. The most kick-rear end expensive high-tech military explosives aren't even twice as energetic as TNT, which isn't even twice as energetic as well-mixed black power. Just going by weight is going to be pretty reasonable. Phanatic fucked around with this message at 05:45 on Jul 2, 2021 |
