Turin Turambar posted:I watched the entire video, if only because I don't think I ever progressed past the first half of Hexen... I also watched the entire video, and I was surprised how much I remembered from a playthrough about 5 years ago. Especially the secret levels. I played on the second difficulty tho. Still a switch hunt, but nowhere near as much as a slog. If there is a Hexen 2 video I look forward to seeing some of the puzzles.

Hexen rules and the ice shard spell is my runner up for best shotgun after the SSG. The first hub is needlessly esoteric and visually boring and I think the general view of the game is unfavorable because memories of that hub are the first to surface every time people think of Hexen. The rest of the game is a lot better and deserves more respect than it gets. I've played through the game several times and have still never, ever visited the first secret map legitimately without cheat warping there. The second I can exit that first hub, I'm out.

I love Hexen (try it with High Noon Drifter too!) but what kept me stuck on that first hub in the 90s was figuring out that there were sliding chunks of level geometry in Guardian of Steel. Finding switches is easy, figuring out the cause and effect is a lot harder. Aside from Guardian of Steel I don't think the first hub is too boring, but I do agree that the game just gets better and better afterward. I still think the audio and music of that game is almost unmatched. Never really could get into Deathkings though.

Yeah, I think if you didn't have Guardian of Steel then the first hub of Hexen would play much smoother, it's the one I think you have to go back and forth from the most and it just kinda sucks. I need to give Hexen another go, I made it past the first hub once (by taking advantage of crouching, admittedly) but I need to actually just play the drat thing.

Another thing that would improve Hexen is if they hadn't bothered with the separate classes as it just results in the three characters being rather shallow by FPS standards in terms of arsenal Also Civvie really should stop playing games on the hardest difficulties you can really tell he doesn't get a lot of enjoyment out of doing that in most of the games he plays(and it definitely results in some of his longer videos getting a little tedious in parts too) and I don't just mean Civvie the character I mean you can just feel the tedium leaking through in a lot of his videos from doing that

The lighting seems a little overboard however, it's like the Dynamic Lighting Wizard cast a spell of Bloomicus Maximus. Oh and is my memory failing me, or are those little spider bots original additions (not that there's anything wrong with that)? I don't recall them at all.

Spider bots are in the original, but only a handful show up throughout the entire game.

Hexen is good; the level design isn't anywhere near as much of a problem as the extremely narrow arsenal. Playing with wrath of cronos fixes that problem and lets the rest of the game really shine

drrockso20 posted:I've seen it happen in a lot of his videos, though Hexen is definitely an extreme example Highest difficulty Hexen is a bit of a slog but it keeps your interest due to the scarcity of mana/ammo and health. Every usable item becomes important at high level, and things like creating chokepoints with flechettes or repulsing enemies over cliffs become really important too. It also means a lot of using your starter unpowered weapon though. It would definitely be boring to watch someone else play.
