quote:

Tony Benn’s son has joined the House of Lords in an uncontested byelection, six decades after his socialist stalwart father renounced a hereditary title.

Dr Stephen Benn, 69, also known as Viscount Stansgate, will join Labour’s group on the red benches in parliament’s upper chamber.

The appointment represents a marked departure from the stance taken by his late father, who campaigned to be able to shed his aristocratic position and called the hereditary peerage system “absolutely mad”.

Quite a lot of vacancies being advertised around my way - but - almost all part-time (longest is 20hours, most are 12ish) while demanding 'full flexibility including weekend working' and all at or near national minimum wage. You cannot LIVE on that for anything longer than a back-packing holiday sleeping in hostel dorms doing a bit of fruit picking / teaching English to pay your way.

The 'living wage' isn't even livable if you have rent/mortgage to pay on top of electricity, internet (an essential these days), council tax, and frivolities such as food.

England fans should continue to spam it’s coming home so that every team that knocks them out says they were galvanised by the arrogance. David Baddiel is definitely stupid enough to believe it and get really upset

20 hours give you the maximum universal credit payout without them having to give you pesky things like real contracts and holidays.

I thought there must be some reason behind it.

I'm guessing some of the lower hours on offer are because if you earn less than something like £160pw from a single employer (not sure what the current 'lower earnings limit' is) not only does your employer not have to pay national insurance for you (which from their point of view would be 'dead money'), but you don't even earn the 'tick in the box' of an NI credit.

no one cares about the song, it’s just funny to mock. everyone hates British and Americans because we’re loud stupid assholes that make the world worse for other people and it’s funny when we get some degree of comeuppance. it’s also extremely funny to Americans when it happens to brits because we’re equally contemptible so we get to make fun of smug assholes for once.

I was referring to the fact that both the last two teams to eliminate England from a major tournament have cited the song as motivation. As I implied I do not believe this reflects reality (except as maybe searching for anything extra that can push you on)
