Almost thought you were my brother until you mentioned you & your first partner smoked. My entire family smoked indoors so me, my 2 older brothers & older sister were always the smelly kids or sometimes got in trouble for smoking in our teens just because we smelled like it. None of us ever took up smoking but the one elder brother used to have really bad eczema problems until he moved out, then it all cleared up once he wasn't around 3-4 people constantly smoking like chimneys. I lucked out & never lived with any other smokers, even when I had roommates who liked weed they'd usually smoke outdoors or in their car rather than inside.

I despise the smell of cigarette on clothes, but I love second hand smoke for just this reason. Also I never remember that cigarettes on clothes smell on my parents.

I quit smoking 3 years ago and after about a month I got my sense of smell back and was standing near a smoker and it was like being inside a pot of boiling garbage. I can't loving believe I walked around for 20 years smelling like that.

For some reason I really like the smell of pipe tobacco. Even when I was a little kid and hated going out anywhere being surrounded by smokers*, I thought it smelled nice. * I'm old enough to remember ashtrays, not just in cars, but in cinema seats.  poo poo, I remember McDonalds ashtrays. Your parents would send you up to the counter to grab straws, napkins and tinfoil ashtrays.

It's one of those weird double edged swords, like putting ashtrays on litter bins. On the one hand it gives people the impression that you can smoke there. On the other hand, if people are going to do it anyway you don't want them disabling fire alarms to sneak out the emergency exit, or dropping burning embers just anywhere.
