It is by will alone I set my mind in motion.
Had my NB no start again after stopping at a gas station following a 30 minute highway drive. Tried jumping it, no change, battery seems good, just cranks. Stuck there for a while but it eventually started and I drove it straight to the mechanic.

No engine codes and they couldn’t reproduce no start until they let it fully heat up for a while and then got a ~5s crank and start.

They seem to think heat soak is causing the CAS/CPS to malfunction and wanted to replace for $650. I told them I’d think about it and just take it back in the meantime.

The CAS is know to poo poo itself when hot, usually causes the engine to stop and fail to restart until the sensor cools down. I had a CEL though which made it super clear. But you can just buy it for like $35 and swap it the next time it dies on you, takes like 2 minutes.

Sure you're not missing an extra 0 at the end? Or is there some mythical CAS that isn't one of the two most expensive parts under the hood? (the other being the IAC)

Nope, unless CAS and CPS are different things on an NB: https://www.mx5parts.co.uk/camshaft-position-sensor-aftermarket-mk2-25-p-4361.html

Although I think I got the OEM one which was about twice that IIRC

If you're replacing the CAS / Cam / Crank sensors. Buy the OEM ones. Especially if you're tracking the car.

Ahh okay, NB. The NA has a single unit at the back of the head that is expensive as hell.

I am bad at pricing a car in the current climate where KBB's are useless. What should I be asking for my 1999 NB with 106500 miles, rust-free in midwest?

Flaws include: paint on plastic parts spidering, a minor vinyl rip thing on driver door panel, mildly crusty headlights, stupid plastic panel under steering wheel, cruise is kaput. I have all documents of repairs and maintenance. Also winter tires mounted to stock wheels. Stock except wheels/tires, brakepads.

On a '92? Did the odometer roll over or did someone drive it into a Land Of The Lost time-hole and it came out in the future?

I'm essentially the second owner, bought it in 2018, PO was an older guy who bought it new, babied it, and then died and his son didn't have the heart to sell it for 8 years after he went, but had the heart to garage and maintain it since he was a mechanic. The odo has an 0 at the beginning.

My parents in law have a '92 that they bought new and I think they have 42k miles on it. Most of the year it just sits in the garage with a car cover over top and acts as shelving.

Well, I don't think the clutch master is leaking. I cleaned it up earlier and there are no drops or moisture on it of any kind. At least I now have a spare that I can take with me on long trips!

The alternator bolt though, fuuuuck. After screwing around with it for a while, I came up with this contraption since I couldn't really get to it from below:

It's hooked up through the box side of a combination wrench at the bottom there. And it works! It turned the wrench from the lowest position possible as far up as it'd go before smashing into the housing but... as far as I could tell, it doesn't rotate the other end of the bolt 1:1, so it might be just getting twisted. Maybe tomorrow when I can actually see something it'll go better. It seems also that I might be able to hit the area with a torch which could help.

Mostly time and not wanting to fix what wasn't broken. I had to do the brakes and (potentially) the clutch master before the Alps trip so when it turned out to be ok, I rather didn't want to mess with it a few days before the trip.

The engine's going to have to be pulled to fix the frame rails soon anyway so all this and some other preventative maintenance (clutch, mounts, etc) will be done at that time.

BTW is it significantly easier to do the timing belt with the engine out? Since I won't be DIYing the frame, I'd have to pay them to do it at the same time, or do it myself later. I would assume SKF kits are pretty good since they make the bearings?

Olympic Mathlete

Fair enough, I understand having a bunch of other poo poo to be getting on with too.

Timing belt wise I got an SKF kit when I first picked the car up and it was absolutely bang on. I fitted that with the engine in situ and it was fiddly but not the worst job in the world. I replaced the belt again again recently (cam cover leak) with the front end apart, radiator out and it was a lot easier because with the car in the air I could fairly comfortably sit on the floor inside the engine bay and play - watch your head. Engine out though will make everything a bunch easier, just remember to crack the crank bolt before removing the engine because that boy is tight.

I don't know either, but it photographs great. I'd look for comparable prices, list a couple grand high, and let other people fight out what the right price is. Don't take the first low-ball that comes along, the people who watch the ad sites all day are looking to flip things and make a buck: if you want to get near retail, you need to think like a dealer and wait for the right buyer. I'd be a little surprised if you don't have a message from someone in this forum already.

Managed to tighten the alternator belt without actually loosening the pivot bolt just enough to stop it from squeaking. You can't use the tensioning bolt to force it looser since it would just come out, but tightening a bit was easy. No squeaking since, why the hell have I not done this sooner lol

Also these were the pads I took out a few weeks back. No idea if they're OEM, probably, since I haven't changed them myself by 120k km. One of them is not like the others :v:

The friction surface was clean if course but otherwise they were this rusty. I guess I'll have to check and lube all the pins though.

Took the NC in for the post-suspension-install alignment. I think I'm definitely going to need to swap in adjustable control arms and replace all the bushing things because we had a hell of a time trying to get it to Flyin' Miata's spec. We got it as close as we could, though. It's always something.

Also got cut off by a motorcycle (!) on the way home and bounced my dog off the dashboard. No injury but as soon as we got in the door I ordered him a proper harness.

Does the ND take a hitch receiver OK? Any cutting or exhaust mods necessary? Any handling penalties (when unladen) y’all have noticed? It’d just be for a bike rack.

I have the hard dog hitch and there's no cutting involved. You just need to take off the rear bumper and it bolts onto the frame. It works fine with the stock exhaust but I had problems with the Goodwin SuperQ exhaust: with the stock hangars, it would sometimes swing enough to contact the hitch and make a banging sound audible from inside the cabin. YMMV for other aftermarket exhausts. I've thought about trying stiffer poly hangars but haven't done so yet.

Other than that it works great. I haven't felt any handling penalty but I'm also not really driving it that hard. If you get the hard dog one, the receiver is a separate piece with a loose-ish fit so I'd recommend getting their "anti-rattle kit" or else it will rattle quite a bit.

I really want one for my ND to haul race wheels to events but I don't want the extra ~20 lbs behind the rear axle. Supposedly highway use doesn't add much wear but I also luv to buy a new set of 200tw every other month.

I have the hard dog hidden hitch on my ND and it's great. No complaints but I'm all stock. It's usually used for a 2 bike rack but I also have a small hitch rack and I even towed a harbor freight trailer with a light load several times.
