Darchangel posted:

Right now, the battery capacity is the issue. Even in a small/lightweight car, you end up with a lot of weight in battery, more so than a modern ICE of comparable performance. Basically, even a small EV is a bit of a porker with current battery tech. It's coming, of course, but no clue when - EVs have been waiting on batteries for 50 years or better, now...

Even just a bit of a sidestep idea like using clusters of small Lithium batteries rather than monolithic larger lead acid or Nickel metal hydride might make a difference. I certainly wouldnt have thought a cluster of lithium laptop batteries would have been a workable - and successful - solution but yet here we are and EV's are rushing into the mainstream as a result. Just rewind to 2011 here and no one would have believed that lovely Tesla Roadster we all laughed at on Top Gear was about to lead to the Model S - and that's turned out to be the 21st century's car industry turning point to the direction of EV's and what they are.

I kinda think Lithium wont be the long term battery solution but it's def good enough while someone works out the next step.

Reading science stuff about sodium ion battery technology makes it seem like not as much performance and capacity, but vastly cheaper and easier build than lithium ion. Which kinda sounds to me like the ideal thing for commuter cars and grocery getters, where who cares about weight, performance, and overall maximum range, when cheap and safe are the most important factors. So in a hypothetical future, you might get loads of sodium based economy cars, and the lithium stuff will be reserved for the high performance, high power, expensive luxury cars.

Individually cased cylindrical batteries seems like a terrible way to build a battery pack if lightweight is the goal, but I'm not going to assume I know more than the engineers who are pushing these cars out with this configuration.

Maybe heating and fire control is an issue. Maybe we need to store battery packs in an airtight steel container in the back/sides for the vehicle to have predesigned blow out panels like a tank's ammo magazine. Who knows. It's an exciting time to be an automotive engineer.

Yeah, it's mainly an issue with the chemistry tending to be safer using a shitload of 18650 cells versus the pouch cells. Think laptop batteries, and how few puff issues there were when they still used the individual cells. Of course, they were larger and more awkward, too.

I guess they got the pouched cells good enough, since that what most of the EVs are using, right?

I'd drive that for sure.

Don't the cells basically expand during charging or use. Easier to contain the pressure with 18650.

That's true about the movies, but there's no reason you couldn't make the explosions wrong in new and exciting ways. You could make the explosion... blue?

Perfect for wafting about like you would in an original DS...

https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/355650/electrogenic-reveals-electric-citroen-ds-conversion-200-mile-range

quote:

Based on a 1971 example of the iconic Bertoni designed Citroen saloon, the company has created what it claims to be the world’s first professionally converted DS running on electric power only. The car’s original 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine has been replaced by a 120bhp electric motor developing 235kW torque. Like other classics converted by the company, it still sends its power to the wheels (the front wheels in the case of the DS) through the car’s original manual gearbox. A battery 48.5kWh in capacity has been packaged in, which the brand says offers a real-world range of around 140 miles on a single charge.

The car retains the hydro-pneumatic suspension of the original, though with some modern tweaks to make the system more compatible with the electric drivetrain. As such, the mechanical pump for controlling the suspension’s hydraulic system has been replaced with a modern electric one, to reduce noise. “As with all first-time conversions, the DS presented us with unique challenges. In this case adapting the hydro-pneumatic suspension to run without the combustion engine. The old pump was so noisy that it detracted from the silent drive of the car, but our new electric pump solved the issue completely"

Has anyone EV swapped a proper lowrider yet? Seems like you could simplify the hydraulic system quite a bit since you wouldn't need the massive bank of deep cycle 12V's for the pumps.

I'm not going to pretend to understand Baja and off-road racing, but isn't the Raptor technically supposed to be a "pre-runner", which, as I understand it, would drive a course much more slowly and map out obstacles and stuff?

Someone who understands this, please add details.
