Weren't the issues with the z06 something to do with insufficient baffles in the oil pan or something? Or something to do with the dry sump system?

That seemed more like a design flaw?

I'm not going to pretend to understand Baja and off-road racing, but isn't the Raptor technically supposed to be a "pre-runner", which, as I understand it, would drive a course much more slowly and map out obstacles and stuff?

Someone who understands this, please add details.
You're pretty close, but also:
  • A pre-runner is typically less capable than the race rig, though how significantly varies by the team/budget. It mostly exists as a way to run the course before the race without risking the race rig. Think more "practice run" than "much more slowly and map".
  • a Raptor is a nice dirt road truck. It's not a real pre-runner in any sense of the word.

They blow up from oil starvation with a good driver / tires but they also overheat very easily.

Those were from two entirely separate versions of the car. Pre 2010 C6Zs would have oil starvation issues in prolonged (4+ second) high-g left turns. This was actually a common problem with all Gen3s that GM attempted to remedy by making the LS7 semi-dry sump in the first place. Didn’t work. :v:

Pre 2017 C7Zs had overheating issues when hotlapped. The changes GM made for this one were actually pretty minor, but in concert apparently worked pretty well.

The "tires + good driver" is carrying a lot of that issue though. Iirc you can pop a stock s2000 with slicks for the same reason too.

I haven't really seen that, a lot of fast people don't run baffles because some of them hurt drain back. I never logged my pressures in the S2000 though. You can definitely reliably fuel starve them on lefts with a bump mid corner and the stock PCV system will absolutely dump oil through the intake and lead to low oil pressure if you don't check it between sessions or fix the issue once you get quick.

e: Oh, and I suppose there is the part about AP1s tearing the front upper control arm mounts off the frame if they aren't rewelded

My Miata drops to like 18-20psi of oil pressure on the brakes, which is apparently a normal and fine thing.

I didn't know about the suspension thing but lol.

I think the oil one is another long enough right direction and with enough g forces problem but it's also not an issue I've personally studied so grain of salt.

Didn't Corvette owners actually sue over the track issues?

Once you get to slicks and a driver capable of using them things start to break down for a lot of cars. Oil starvation, cracking suspension and/or mounts, all sorts of brake issues, etc. Not giving GM a pass on it just saying they aren't the only manufacturer to have these issues.

We nearly killed a BMW M20 at Atlanta Motorsport Park on the turn 13-14-15 corner which is a long flat out left turn.

Yeah it will happen with just about any road car on slicks. There’s also a corner on the ring that will destroy your diff when you’re fast without an external cooler. It’s a funny old game.

The correct fix for this is vintage cars on bias ply tires, enough grip to have fun but not enough to break poo poo. The locost is fast and fun on slicks, it's hilarious on modern street tires and it's a maniac on bias ply.

The first gen Ford Ranger (US) has an open storage area in the dash, directly above the glovebox. It is just tall enough to wedge six 12oz aluminum cans into. The vehicle is just narrow enough that you can reach five of them if your arms are long-ish.

How that man never got pulled over for drunk driving, or drinking while driving, I'll never know.

We also figured out that if you gently drop a can out either window at 55mph, it'll get sucked up into the bed to join the beer can tornado going on back there.

As an aside: the truck was an '86 Ranger Waldoch conversion 4x4. Never seen another like it. All three diffs switchable on-the-fly, wired for a winch, rubberized floormats, color coded (brown) everything, even had a matching pinstriped topper once upon a time. Neat truck, totally gutless with the 3.slow, but would crawl at 2mph anywhere the tires could find grip.
