The base system is pretty neat, I think. Unfortunately, the core book isn't great at explaining itself. Everyone seems to suggest starting with the beginner box quick start, but I've never read it myself.

The system's got this weird mix of loose storygameness with specific subsystems that are very nitpicky. I think the silhouette (size) rules are a 16-point scale or something? And range is measured in bands, as is popular nowadays, but they're very concrete measurement ranges and there's like ten of them, too.

And it's totally fair and cool for a samurai drama/combat game to have fiddlier combat. But also I don't think that means you need to make sure katana and saber, or nodachi and naginata, have distinct specific damage numbers on a scale of 1-10 or whatever. Just give me a few general weapon profiles and make any interesting weapon stuff special rules that do more than +damage.

Still pretty okay, anyway, and probably the least racist iteration of the game that could ever be. And part of the expected core gameplay experience is "trying to live up to samurai ideals is hosed up and impossible, so your life is a violent soap opera."

I'm playing a long-running game of l5r where the core conceit is "samurai ideals are hosed up and toxic, but they're also the slowly-fraying bootlace that the entire weight of the Empire is dangling off of (and if the Empire falls, so do you)" and it's made for some genuinely interesting and complicated stories.

It's based off Edge of the Empire which has gear porn galore, so that kinda tracks. Genesys is all over the place but I think with some more refinement it could've had legs. I've only played the demo of L5R and it was by the worst GM I know so I chalked it up to him.

No it's not. It's a different core mechanic that tries to marry FFG's love of custom dice with the roll and keep of 4th Ed, but it has nothing to do with Star Wars /Genesys

I'll be that person! The latest sourcebook developed under FFG came out earlier this year, focused on warfare and the Lion, and Edge Studio (where the FFG RPGs were moved) is supposed to be continuing to publish L5R sourcebooks into the future. Which is good, because although L5R sourcebook has a general theme and options for every faction/clan they're also a sourcebook for a specific clan, so if they were to stop now then several of the seven clans would end up missing out (currently we have Crab, Crane, Phoenix, and Lion, so we still need Dragon, Unicorn, and Scorpion).

No surprise you haven't heard though, the seeming suddenness of FFG being carved up left a lot of games in the lurch. Plus Edge Studios is still working on having a functioning website, so there's no centralized place to actually go read this stuff.

I feel like if you're going to be intentionally racist, whether to dogwhistle or to tweak liberal SJW cuck noses, you'd probably go with something with a little more oomph than a "lol dishwasher" joke.

The whole thing scans really easily to me as "boomery white dude with the cultural sensitivity of a barnacle thinks he had a clever idea." There's a lot of those kind of people in gaming, with the passive shittiness that comes from growing up privileged and oblivious to social mores. It's extremely easy for people to be generally lovely without being malicious.

Not that it matters much either way, since he's still being lovely on a big public platform.

L5r is an anachronistic combination of several different eras that were nowhere near each other made to produce a specific sort of setting. Trying to use it as a Japan simulator is silly, and if you try to lock it to a specific era it loses a lot, same as if you try to make it "more realistic" the comparison to pendragon is not an accident.

All of that is bog-standard.

"Must not be prejudicial to the reputation of GW" means "we reserve the right to take your stuff down if we decide your politics are bad for our PR."

"Must not include artwork or imagery copied from official GW material" is literal - you can't reprint official GW screenshots or art in your fan work.

The rest of it boils down to "label fan stuff as unofficial, don't try to sell it."

The bit about not allowing ad revenue on fan stuff is the only thing there that stands out because it's not that common for it to be explicitly called out like this, but it makes sense.

I don't really get what's special about the underlined stuff, it's just don't use their images or text in your fanstuff and don't poo poo on GW, seems pretty standard. It is only really a problem for fan sites, since reporting is hard if you can't quote or show pictures, but that would probably fall under whatever critique and journalism is rather than just fan works.

Edit : It might gently caress over tools like the yaktribe necromunda tools, but I assume they were already in grey areas.

This change was made 2 weeks ago. It IS new to GW, and clearly an intention to use it, because of Warhammer+ coming out, and if they decide they LIKE your fan fiction and want to own it, and you say no, you must demonatise it.

No more lore channels or sites, because they use GW art. No NEW lore because who wants to risk losing their channel when GW decides to test fire their Death Star Laser at it.

For me, I need to remember that Victoria Miniatures exists and I do not need to buy any new GW IG army units anyway.

The two that stand out to me in being not already part of basic copyright and intellectual copyright law are the restriction on prejudicial-to-GW fan sites (GW shouldn’t really have any authority to take down my geocities site saying “I like teh Emperor e fights aliens and doesn’t afraid of anything” even if it says “Matt Ward is teh suxxorz”) and the demand for all hobby books and magazines to be non-commercial (I believe it should be within my rights to publish for money a magazine about, say, painting miniatures, GW ones included.)

I'm curious how that exact wording translates into legal terms. I'm pretty sure "Matt ward is teh suxxorz" is protected speech, I would hope given everything going on that the intent of that part is so they can orbital laser anyone using their property for explicitly pro-fascist stuff

And on top of its era being "fantasy mishmash", much like the """Medieval European""" fantasy of many other RPGs, it's also a mishmash of Japanese, Chinese and some other SEA (and probably elsewhere) politics and geography. The landscape of the Emerald Empire is like "what if Japan, but mostly a contiguous land sort of like China." So a lot of Rokugan reads as being those really amazingly beautiful Japanese bucolic countrysides, but it takes up the vast heart of a half-million square mile empire. The empire and its origins draw quite a bit from romantic mythologies and histories of China, not just Japan.

It translates into "We have more money to throw at lawyers than you do, gently caress you," like every other policy that ignores fair use. Same reason they don't get into what "imagery copied" means.

The prejudicial clause isn't there so they can shut down people who criticise GW, it's a completely standard clause that's there so GW can go "you do fan stuff but you posted something politically controversial* which making us look bad by association, you're in breach of our ToS."

*where "politically controversial" could just as easily mean "Hitler did nothing wrong" as "TERFs are bad, actually," because corporations suck rear end.
