Speaking of assess and Grindr, has anyone actually found why the 2nd gear can be impossible to shift into when cold on NA/NBs? All googling turned up is people saying :shrug: try different oil and live with it. I find it hard to believe that out of millions of miatas, nobody actually took the gearbox apart to have a look. I can certainly live with it, but it is annoying and I'd imagine would be a huge red flag if I ever tried to sell it.

Cold 2nd is often tough on the NC as well. I was able to get a slight improvement by switching to that Ford trans fluid. Shouldn't be a red flag for a buyer - just show them the first page of Google results.

I've done the magic motorcraft juice years ago, unfortunately it didn't do poo poo :v:

I'm not really planning on selling it, but I think I would definitely be concerned about buying any car with a second gear that was't going in wile the car was cold.

That seems to be the going price for under 100,000 mile NA's. That's actually cheaper than I've been seeing.

How about a 2006 NC with 70K on the clock and a brand new top? No body rust, a couple dings and some pits on the front bumper. Tires were new last spring, like 500 miles on them.

The dealership offered me $9k cash or $11k trade for my '08 PRHT touring with 97k. New tires, no rust, some dents and dings.

I am at a real loss here. All the drains I know about at the front of the car flow well. I checked both front fenders and removed (small) amounts of accumulated debris, but it didn't help. The drain in the rubber door gasket also runs clear. But I get this after a big rain.

The only thing left I can think of, but I don't really get how it could be this, is I recently had the top replaced.

Also, the passenger side floor is a bit wet, but significantly less than this.

Any ideas? I really need to solve this before mold takes over, if it hasn't already.

In case anyone is curious...I actually isolated this to a problem with the rear driver side drain. Somehow the tube was screwed up and water draining off the top was ending up in the rocker panel under the door and dumping into the driver footwell. I yanked the drain hose from the bottom and there was a trim faster somehow stuck in it. Really bizzare. The drain tube on the driver side is a 3 piece system with a coupler between two lengths of rubber hose. Inside the coupler is a little rubber flap for some reason. I somehow got the coupler and lower hose back into the upper hose still in the car, but I'm not confident it is going to stay attached. Seems like the only way to really fix this is to remove the soft top to get at the upper drain pans and the full pan+hose assembly.

So...how hard is it to remove the softtop? I just had a brand new top put on and I know getting it stretched over the frame is a big pain, but once that is done is it fairly easy to uninstall and reinstall the entire soft top assembly?

NA/NB tops are easy, it's just a faff of a job because you need it up to get at the fasteners at the back inside the cabin. Once those are done you can pull it back to get at the other main ones. Again not difficult but you need to pull plastics off, seat belt mounts etc.

I'm working on the sills of my NB now and I notice from factory the inner sill to body has the shittiest drains. There's about 6/7 10mm slots and at least 2 of those are partially obstructed due to how the various internal structures are layered. They're supposed to drain into the outer sills which has the main drain holes, I'm not sure if that's a great idea or not seeing as these cars rot in these places. If these inner sill drains manage to get blocked by dirt due to the convertible top drain getting damaged/slipping off then I guess it's possible that it would allow a build up of water to get to a point where it starts to dump into the interior through the various holes for attaching carpet etc.

I've not actually removed any of the car interior so I don't know how easy it would be to pull the plastic fittings/carpet to get to a point where you can see or possibly prod those inner sill drains to check if they're clear.

Basically all my cutting away of my car has revealed a bunch of lovely engineering. Love multiple layers of steel in places which will catch water and rot it inside out! I'm not going to put it all back as it was, I'm modifying the area around the rear sill section partly because of this layering and partly because you can't buy those replacement panels anyway.

Been a while, Hell Miata (96 NA) has been leaking oil everywhere and it discouraged me so much I stopped driving it. I took the front end of the motor apart and basically paused for a year. Today I had some extra time, which is extremely rare in my life, so I continued the teardown.

One of the things I noticed was the timing belt was bone dry while everything else was slathered in oil. So I took the crank pulley off to look behind it.



Seal looked okay, but I cleaned it up the front end with a power washer to be sure.



Still looks okay. It cant be the oil pump seal because the timing belt would be soaked. So wtf.



Hold on. What the hell is that?

Time to investigate.



Gonna stick it in and see what I find.



GOD DAMMIT.

Who knows what is supposed to go there? Kinda looks like another dipstick location. It definitely touches the bottom of the pan.

Are you talking about the hole in the top of the oil pump there? Probably just filled with leaking oil, I've seen some that are plugged up top and some that are not machined though all the way.

I'm guessing your cam seals are leaking, it goes behind the timing cover and coats everything. May as well replace the plastic cam covers since they rarely fit together right anyway.

The hole is 5 inches deep. Are you sure it's sealed? 5 inches is to the bottom of the pan.

I had a little wonkiness in the exhaust cam seal. I don't think it accounts for the dramatic amounts of oil it was leaving on parking lots.

The one on my car has a hole there, but it wasn't machined though. Maybe you have one where the plug was pressed in and the plug went missing :(

That hole is there because in applications when the engine is used in a transverse configuration, that's the dipstick location. That oil pump got used in a few applications such as the Kia Sephia, so it gets plugged for longitudinal mounting. What you plug it with is up for debate, since I work in a machine shop, the ideal solution would be a press fit and freeze the plug in liquid nitrogen and drop it home.

I crammed it with a high temp silicone plug. I figure I can always grab it with a screw if it starts sinking in. It's also no big loss if it comes out. Then I just do what you said.

I still Drive it daily with the top down to and from work, we will see how it goes. I was thinking about putting a old beat-up mailbox where the muffler used to be and having a lightweight spring on the door of it so it would open and close based on throttle. Kinda like a tractor flappy thing but on a car and horizontal.

poo poo, this is terrible news, and I hope that the cost of the surgery is manageable and that it will keep your vision intact. Definitely understandable that cars would fall by the wayside when you're facing something like that.
