the pronunciation of letter names was one of countless groundbreaking reforms instituted by Ataturk, who returned the letters to their original nature after the Arabs forced Turks to pronounce the letter K wrong. you might be chided for saying K that way as a child, even if it “slips through” once in a while, no matter how hard you try.

in this highly normal country, one of the most prominent shibboleths for whether you support the PKK or not is whether you pronounce PKK the way one would in “standard” Turkish or the cruder sounding alternative pronunciation that is frowned upon for racist reasons having to do with Arabs. PKK supporters will loudly and proudly say it the “right” way one would in Turkish, whereas the nationalists (essentially everyone else in Turkey) regress to this embarrassing condition.

so. idk.

I couldn’t get too far on The US Army China paper before I couldn’t take it seriously but there were some entertaining parts:

While Western militaries are generally apolitical and are divorced from political parties, the PLA is officially the armed wing of the CPC.”

Sure thing buddy.

“ 1-15. China desires status as a world power, likely using Imperial Great Britain or post-World War II United States as a model. This end state helps to achieve many smaller goals important to the Chinese: global influence, economic development, internal security, and CPC primacy. China views this final objective as incremental: it seeks to be a “prosperous society” by 2035, with the CPC still remaining the dominant political entity in China. This objective likely implies China being a regional hegemon in the Western Pacific, with a robust middle class and fully modernized military. The country desires to transition to a “leading world power” by the year 2049 (the centennial anniversary of the country’s founding), complete with a “world-class military.” These objectives are not nebulous, nor are they fanciful thinking— they are written into the CPC Constitution. Of note, despite the nature of these objectives, the Chinese government does not describe itself as seeking either regional or global hegemony.”

China says they want a prosperous society but if we were them we would want to be a global empire so I bet that’s what they are doing.

China’s transition to a Communist political and economic system was a long and enormously destructive process that further marginalized its once- dominant power.

I guess that is one way to describe rising from the ashes of colonialism and WW2 and then doubling the life expectancy of nearly billion people by two in 30 years! Also the Korean War doesn’t count.

I couldn’t get past these parts into the real Tom Clancy meat of the thing but for their sake they had better hope it is researched more seriously than this stuff. Link to paper again: https://armypubs.army.mil/epubs/DR_pubs/DR_a/ARN33195-ATP_7-100.3-000-WEB-1.pdf

All those statements seem pretty on the nose, not sure why you object to them except that it’s being said by an American dude. Only thing I’d say doesn’t seem right is suggestion that they’re consciously using Imperial GB or post WW2 US as a mode, because those are both very different models of spreading influence and that statement seems overly general without qualifiers/specifics.

Are we of the mind here that China… doesn’t want to be more of a world power?

I don’t object to the statements because they come from a big beautiful American I object to them because they are either completely untrue or based on fanciful speculation. I do not disagree with the assessment that China seeks to be “a world power” but that doesn’t mean it is developing into a colonial era empire.

One other thing I enjoyed was the part where the US Army described China as having a”horrendous human rights record”. I admit that the fact that the accusation came from an official American troop I had trouble engaging with the claim on its own merits because I was so amazed at the audacity.

this is what i found last time i looked into it:

https://redsails.org/another-view-of-tiananmen/

https://worldaffairs.blog/2019/06/02/tiananmen-square-massacre-facts-fiction-and-propaganda/

quote:

An article from Vancouver Sun (17 Sep 1992) described the role of the CIA: “The Central Intelligence Agency had sources among [Tiananmen Square] protesters” … and “For months before [the protests], the CIA had been helping student activists form the anti-government movement.”

To help the US intelligence, there were two important people: George Soros and Zhao Ziyang. Soros is legendary for organizing grassroots movements around the world. In 1986, he had donated $1 million – which was a lot of money in China in those days – to the Fund for the Reform and Opening of China. Over the next three years, Soros’ group had cultivated and trained many pro-democracy student leaders, who would spring into action in 1989. The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) also opened offices in China in 1988.

Mainland China’s success in combating the coronavirus pandemic increases the likelihood that free public health care, similar to Hong Kong, will be provided for the nation’s 1.4 billion-strong population, says a leading expert on the country’s medical care reform.

“China’s success in containing transmission of the virus last year was largely due to the up-to-the-minute free testing and treatment, the result was very good with an affordable price,” said Li Ling, a professor at the National School of Development at Peking University.

“It was similar to Hong Kong’s public health care, which is virtually free to all individuals and works very well.

“China is still a developing country with a large population, but with our national power today, it is possible to provide free medical care.”

About 95 per cent of mainland China’s population is covered by a public medical insurance programme, with most falling under either the urban or urban-rural resident schemes.

A truly military way of thinking. Around this time, those who advocated starting a war with Russia were regarded by the genrō and civilian politicians as “almost akin to traitors who want to gamble with the nation’s fate.” This kind of judgment made Saneyuki angry. “There are too many people who act as if prudence is the only mark of loyalty. They worry about relations with this country and that country and always counsel ‘prudence, prudence.’ It makes me sick.”

Looking back on it, lmao. No wonder why there's a belief that the Russo Japanese war led directly to Empire of Japan getting destroyed by USA.

i really dont think theres enough appreciation for how unconditional surrender really hosed up the playbook for japan and it really wasnt particularly unreasonable of them to assume that they could negotiate a new mutually beneficial treaty because that was basically how the entire history of war had played out

like poo poo theyd literally just watched negotiated surrenders play out in europe and it was a full year after they bombed pearl harbor before anyone was seriously talking about how negotiated surrenders are dumb and that enemy countries needed to be burned to the ground
