The change in, I dunno, feel, I guess? from going from a regular fast drag racer to a car that the rules say needs a loving parachute is jarring. Many many years ago I was working nights for the service manager at my work, who had an 11-second RX-7, and that thing was loving fast. Then he took that engine and put it in a tube chassis Honda S600, and the first passes he was doing low-9s @ around 235km/h. He took me out for a blast once at Calder and it was like, pants-making GBS threads, but in a good way.

I work in a body shop and have witnessed a few model x's get taken apart. They are built cheaply as in economically. Quick clipped together. The suspension set up on them are very basic at best. There is no reason that vehicle needs to have staggering hp and torque figures. Furthermore ANY floor pan damage on these cars totals them immediately.

Common sense would be to introduce much better driver's ed, both in the coverage of what is taught and in the time taken to make sure people have actually learnt it.

That's part of it, but do you really think the license you get when you are tested in your honda civic should qualify you to drive a 13 ton truck with a 4.9 ton trailer on the back? Because it does.

Or a 300+HP anything? No, I think there should be additional training and at least some requirement to show that you understand what you're doing. The merit of having such powerful vehicles on public roads can of course also be debated, for various use cases, a 300HP truck is obviously going to be different from a 300HP sports car. I fully understand the argument that having a car is mandatory in many places, and you're screwed without it. But that need should be covered by an ordinary econobox or basic sedan or maybe a CUV or medium SUV, outside of some specific circumstances. It doesn't have to cover muscle cars etc. Coming back to your example, I think the standard license in the US allows for way too big and heavy vehicles. I'm glad there's a 3500kg gross weight limit for car licenses here, and anything heavier must have a speed limiter, plus of course you must take a license specifically for large vehicles. For as much flak as tiered motorcycle licensing has gotten in the EU, making sure that a freshly-licensed 18yo can't just go straight out and ride a literbike seems very sensible to me. Phone posting, so it’s tough to see, but did the wheel bar break? And then the chute deployed because the mount for it broke? Edit: license chat: noting how badly most people drive, I’m not opposed to a more tiered system in n the US, particularly for younger drivers. Id love for self-driving to remove the problem, but Musk protest notwithstanding, barring some remarkable progress in machine learning and AI, it’s not happening in the next decade. Initially you have to drive with a full licence holder then not sure of the specifics but something about no turbos and no V8s when you start solo driving. When the laws came in there was an almost overnight change in what was popular here, no more Japanese vs Domestic street cars, it was all various 4x4s and they hosed off out of town.

In Italy you are forbidden to purchase or drive any car if it exceeds a KW/wet weight ratio than 55 and a KW value of 70 for the first year of your driving license.

Similar in NZ - learners with a supervisor, restricted with restricted hours and no passengers, full. 4500kg weight is only vehicle restriction on learners and restricted, 6000kg in full. No restrictions and cheap JDM imports = 16yos scattering a large number of clapped out R32’s across the countryside.

I've been saying ever since I got my licence that it would be kind of neato to have a little card with new and obscure traffic laws detailed when you get a licence/vehicle rego renewal.

Was trying to watch online the latest installment of pure Family Movie with Vin Diesel but instead a norwegian movie series called Børning (3 films - 2014, 2016 and 2020). Very light-hearted slightly-comedic road movies about illegal racing (2k kms, much like Cannonball race) and a deadbeat dad that is trying to be a good person. More family values and character development than last 6 F&F movies at like 1/100th of the budget. Muscle cars vs muscle cars vs Toyotas vs Euros included. Had really great fun watching those. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtqJAsJ25YM subtitled trailer Also got recommended to watch "Shuto Kousoku Trial", apparently a series of 80's-90's japanese films that are banned in japan and are about racing. Serious vibes of the legendary 'Mid Night Club' from the stills. Will watch that later this week. Erulisse fucked around with this message at 11:20 on Aug 16, 2021 |
